Schleifer / Mazurka

A Schleifer from a notebook after Heinrich Nicol Philipp, Seibis, 1784. We think of this as a Mazurka, though, and play it as such.
The joke in the beginning may require an explanation for people not familiar with the instrument. Swedish bagpipes are usually preconfigured before playing a tune, to play in a minor, or a major, scale. This is often done by sliding a rubber ring along the chanter to cover the finger hole for the major third, if playing in minor. This tune is in major, though, and should therefore be played "ohne Gummi" ("without rubber").

It is a „Schleifer“, in the original manuscript the no. 22, p. 48. There is a published transcription: Zachmeier, E.: Die Notenhandschrift des Heinrich Nicol Philipp, Bayreuth, 2004. There it is no. 23, p. 17. It is probably written for fiddle, so the version played here, is adapted to the key and the range of Swedish bagpipes. Schleifer is a dance that was very popular in the late 18th until the early 19th century. Often it is regarded as a predecessor of the waltz. If you look on the melodies with the experience of a today’s dance musician, you often think of it as a waltz or a mazurka, or as one of the fast and energetic 3-time dances as boureé or mazurek-like. It is assumed that the name indicates the grinding (schleifend) sound of the feet that do not leave the floor. But there’s no reliable description of the dance itself.
