This is a VHS video from a car ride in Naperville from May 1990. The video was created for a NNHS class called "New Media". This is the entire footage, starting from the Fox Valley Area, traveling Ogden, and finishing in Cress Creek. Within KZbin, this may be best played at 1/2 speed to slow down footage. I have removed audio.
Highlights:
- Starts on New York street, adjacent to where Menards currently is today.
- Turn left onto Ogden (Feldott's on the right)
- Pass Nabisco sign, Naperville's second Kmart, car dealerships
- Continue onto East Ogden; the right hand merge & stoplight was brand new.
- Continue and pass Cress Creek Square, NNHS, Washington & Ogden businesses
- Pass many defunct businesses along Ogden
- Travel through the Ogden Mall
- Iroquois Road to Diehl Road
- Old Cress Creek Commons Road (houses currently there) at a dangerous rate of speed
- End on Ferncroft Court.

KZbin indicating how much they know about me. Never looked up Naperville on here to my knowledge, but YT recommended this video when I came across an old 90s downtown Chicago clip...not any other suburb. My family moved out there from Cicero three years after this video was recorded, my dad making the commute since I was a kid. You drove down Iroquois, so close to our old home. I also took the New Media class at NNHS a few years after you did. Hated living there at first and for a while. I was establishing my identity as a teen and experienced a form of culture shock from the move, lost access to the underground and college radio stations I religiously listened to and taped on cassette after school, my friends and familiar turf, experienced massive depression, etc, but very much miss living in Naperville now. What a great place to live - a distant enough oasis from the city, yet attainable enough access for recreation in the city. Too far, in my opinion for daily commute though, through my experience. In SoCal now, and I feel like it's a dump. Good to visit, not to live. Can't stand it here - sorry for those that might...the atmosphere (or lack thereof), pace & people in general - so much disconnection due to entitlement and/ or obliviousness...as much as I hate overstep from authority, not enough regulation & order here, hence the idiotic constant car chases they broadcast on the "news" and the crappy drivers, low standards in architectural & interior design, food, music, customer service, chill "good vibes only" generically painted attitude, while not considering others while driving or in public situations ("trapped bubble" mentality), the assholes that leave 2-3 car space gaps in front of them at stoplights, the disgusting "gender neutral" restrooms that took over, and even pee (a lot of pee), etc. fairly frequently found on women-only toilets. There's a weird degradation of civility that exists here. Basically the only pro is not being stuck several months out of the year indoors due to freezing temps, not having to scrape ice off your car, shovel/ snowblow sidewalks, slide & drive through gray & black slush & storms, etc. But the trade-off is, in a lot of parts, you're stuck indoors for a good portion of the year due to hot desert-like temps. The only positives I can think of have to do with a slight leverage on weather that also include access to farm-fresh food. Chicago is far more beautiful, despite mountains here - it's too dry and not enough big beautiful trees and greenery framing and enclosing neighborhoods. I miss Chicago & its metro area - it's forever my home. So much beauty, class, culture, range in landscapes, & diversity (there are huge positives to some of the "segregation" - a balance is to be had). But it's also the times - the corporate takeover of everything and the globalization agenda have impacted everywhere so negatively over several years, including back home. But it's definitely worse here in SoCal. Nostalgaing hard.

This video sure highlights how many formerly ubiquitous brands we've lost in the last 30 years. K Mart, Dominick's, White Hen Pantry, Lincoln-Mercury Dealers, Chrysler-Plymouth dealers, Standard and Union 76 gas stations, Radio Shack. Hell, even Nabisco is now "Mondelēz International". So many things we never thought would disappear... And is that a "fuzz buster" on the windshield? Thanks for posting.

This so crazy to me. I come to Naperville all the time. I’m 17 so I was born in 2006. And all of this looks crazily familiar yet so different.

That's amazing! Mark did you work in the Naperville K-Mart that was next to Ogden 6? I was born in Naperville in 1995. I didn't know that Ogden 6 used to be an AMC theater! Also that Dominick's and K-Mart over by Ogden 6 have been gone for forever now. Now that area is pretty empty, unfortunately. Crazy.

OH MY GOD 🙏 🤣 THANK YOU FOR YOUR SHARING OF MY HOMETOWN AND ALL OF THE PLACES WE NEVER, EVER IMAGINED WOULD BE A FADED MEMORY! I WAS TRYING TO REMEMBER FREAKING "FLIP SIDE RECORDS", BUT NO MATTER HOW MUCH I TWEAKED MY SEARCH INFO, I COULDN'T FIND THE SHOP NESTLED RIGHT HERE IN THE OGDEN MALL'S HISTORY. WHAT IS IT??? I CAN LITERALLY LOOK UP ANYTHING ELSE I CAN EVEN PHATHOM, BUT THIS ONE RECORD SHOP WAS GOING TO BE LOST TO ME, BUT THEN.......OH MY GOD YOU ARE MY ANGEL! OKAY I AM A BIT DRAMATIC BUT SERIOUSLY MAN YOU GAVE ME A HUGE PIECE OF MY LIFE AND MEMORIES BACK IN LIVING COLOR!! THANKS DOESN'T EVEN TOUCH IT, BUT I AM TRULY GRAPPLING FOR THE RIGHT WORDS, SO I WILL STOP AT SAYING THANK YOU SO FREAKING MUCH!!! IF IT'S ALRIGHT I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO SHARE IT WITH ALL MY FRIENDS WHO WILL BE SPEACHLESS WHILE WATCHING. GOD BLESS!! LOVE N STRENGTH TO YOU AND YOURS.

I’m so glad you enjoyed it, I love nostalgia and that’s why I put it up there. Ogden Avenue is still a pleasure to drive, I grew up driving up and down that as a teenager, going to and from school, visiting Cress Creek Square and the Ogden mall and all the businesses in between! Speaking of record stores, My all-time favorite record store was Crow’s Nest Digital - Located in Cress Creek Square, I absolutely loved shopping there.

Tons of restaurants along there gone too, but many of the buildings are still there. I noticed in the video Pizza Hut, Burger King, and Bakers Square, all also gone. Also made out a White Hen, which was bought out by 7/11 years ago. Crazy

Things I haven't seen in ages: A '77 Grand Prix, a new Ford Tempo, a '71-2 Chevelle with factory wheelcovers and no SS emblems, turn signals, and a real early Escort peeling out. I guess this was a lease car, ha-ha! Cheers from an ex-West Chicagoan.
