What: Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake/ Afterglow
Where: KZbin
When: ...You push play
Why: Because you can.
Notes: These two songs are first; The Overture of the titled album recording by the same name; "Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake" after the concept album conceived and recorded in 1968 and the second cut on the recording titled; "Afterglow" (of your love). This was to be the last album produced by the original members of the band, Small Faces, leaving us, til this day, wondering what this extremely talented foursome may possibly have attained, if not for this untimely departure.
On the heels of their last and most formidable concept recording, "Small Faces" were just on the edge of (really) breaking into the U.S. Market which they had been trying to do for over a half dozen years now, and they virtually had, and have become known as, "The Best British Band" (never) to hit it big in the U.S. As far as we Yanks were concerned, the only "chart" hit they were ever credited with was, "Itchycoo Park," which being a great song in it's own right, wasn't entirely representative of what they were capable of doing musically wise, as that was... a well kept secret for the British.
However, over in England they were one of the more successful and respected bands of the 60's, as much or more so, than any of the mega-star groups as The Who, The Stones or yes, even those "Mopey Headed Lads" from Liverpool.
The lead singer/songwriter/guitarist Steve Marriott in 1965 basically decided to turn their talents toward American R&B (ironically because they really hadn't any mass exposure here in the states as opposed to the British market).
Steve Marriott, beside his lyrical talents, had a uniquely powerful voice and was also a very aggressive front-man and an exceptional lead guitarist, while the other band members were all too willing and able to match him, with the likes of;
Ronnie Lane/ Bass
Ian McLagan/ Keyboards
Kenney Jones/ Percussion
Long live SF!!!

I missed my chances of the Titanic by a few years and have to settle for a much, much smaller one that fits in the tub at the same time with my rubber duckie... Once again, I am completely blown away by the viewing count of the last 24 hours.I also am pleased that so many people in a younger demographic think that a half century old song that was a great leap forward in concept and content is turning ears to an entirely new generation. I still believe that this music sounds as fresh to me today as it did when I was 16 years old in '68. The entire album production of Nut Gone Flake was, and is today, a planet aligning effort. Thank You, All...

It's a great testament to GTA and the guys at Rockstar that they can make video games - an art form generally considered as childish and disposable - into legitimate platforms for technology, story telling and, of course, great music. Great music is like great art - subjective to taste. Grand Theft Auto has always had sublime taste. Thank you caseypons for uploading this. We're all part of the cultural stew. Peace.

So, do you mean the strings that come into the piece at 1:51. Because if you do, that is one of my favorite parts too. In fact that part has what grabbed me by the ears in 1968 when I heard this album for the first time. It was magical then and still is.some half century later. Thanks for your dropping by to comment.

Kat Mats; I could not agree more with the fact that this (song) has the legs that it has. This whole album, (in my opinion) is one of those productions that seems to get better with age. The vinyl recording came out in '68 and I have probably heard and played this more than any other recording and it stills sounds fresh and listenable today, as it did when I brought it home in '68. Long live the, "Small Faces." Thanks for your post!!!

Well Lerigan, I can't say what the music Gods might say about this song opposed to what I think I know what you mean, but in my opinion this entire album recording back in 1968 certainly moved my cheese, in a good way then, and it still does today. So, on that note, who hid the bread. @Robkirbyguy; I am not really a gamer. That said, after viewing the GTA trailer, I was amazed at the quality of the graphics. First impression was that, they weren't graphics but, real video images of real objects, scenery, people. I needed to view for longer than I would care to admit before I realized they were in fact CGI technology. Incredibly realistic imagery.

If I am not mistaken the original album recording was a mono pressing. There is quite a variation with this stereo recording and all it's separation that make it an interesting addition to the original monaural version. I know there is a mono version available through Amazon if interested. Thanks for the comment...

How astute you are! I had never drawn a correlation between the two songs, til just now as I played the two side by side. I had heard that the two bands were intermingling at the time in London and were, (if not sharing) certainly listening to and influencing one another. Sgt. Pepper and Ogden's were recorded close to the same time and Olympic and Regent studios were probably not to far apart from one another, so who knows what kind of musical espionage took place. Nice post, Picnicl. Thanks!

I must admit, I found this song because of the GTA V trailer. But I don't think that's a problem. Why wouldn't you be able to enjoy, or even love a song (as I do know) that's over 40 years old, even though you just recently discovered it through a trailer of a game? As a kid, I enjoy games, but I also enjoy music. I don't care how old it is. If it sounds good to me, I'm going to listen to it. Thank you, @caseypons, for being so open-minded!

I have long noticed how similar part of the instrumentation on 'Afterglow of Your Love' (the song is from 2.27 onwards on this clip) is to The Beatles 'You Never Give Me Your Money' (... today Came true... today Came true... today...yes it did...). Afterglow came out first although they were both recorded around the same time. It's as if they were acknowledging that each band was going out in a blaze of glory before its dying embers. The end of the 60s indeed was summed up by these 2 bands.

@Rauk, Well that statement speaks volumes doesn't it. I have no idea of your ages, but when this entire album was released in '68ish it was so (unlike) anything that was coming from out of the radio speakers at the time that these 2 separate works (Overture/Afterglow) were what I chose 40 years later to make my very first videographic effort of and/or on. So you know this being my first-born, I can tell you I know how you and your better half must feel about it. Happy Valentines you two...

@smnoel: Your interesting comment poses a good question. I have no idea of your age, but when this was originally recorded back in 1968, one of the many unique qualities of this specific recording was their attention to detail in the studio. The recording I used to make this video is from a 2003 CD which has excellent stereo separation as you just mentioned. If my memory serves me correctly, the original recording was a monaural (single mic) recording as opposed to stereophonic (multiple mic).

Musical compositions can be timeless, this one is a keeper in my estimation. It just happened to by my first attempt at producing a video, and it only took me 43 years. I better hurry up if I am going to get the rest of the album done before I leave the building. Ha! Thanks for the kind words. It really means a lot.

@low72; Hey don't be surprised you hadn't heard of them! Nobody has really, especially if you are from the states. That is why they were know as the greatest band never to have made an impression in good ole America. @ralphaids; All due respect, I was kidding when I said I could change it to represent the GTA-V trailer but, what I am still confused over is your wishing you had seen the video above before the GTA-V trailer. I can say when I produced my video, GTA-V was not exactly what was motivating my thought process.
