You think Oglesby was great, but there's a BIGGER (yep, Texas style) rattlesnake roundup in Sweetwater. It's like their 65th year doing it and it's a thing. I lived near Sweetwater when I was young and my Dad would always go to the roundup. I think that would be a fun experience for you. (side note: I'd never heard of the roundup in Oglesby until you posted about it. Texas is such a great place!)

Growing up in Corpus Christi, we used to go to cattle pastures with cactus clumps. Usually within the cactus was a rat nest and we would use potato rakes and dig into the nest and usually find a rattler. Take them home, broil the meat and tan the skins to make western rattlesnake belts.

Howdy !!!, Olie , I am from Odessa, Texas. I once attended a “ Rattlesnake Round Up”. I heard that the Sheriff had gotten his Posse together and they went out and Rounded ‘em up and brought ‘em all in to the Ector County Coliseum for a” Feed”. I went out of curiosity. I was fortunate enough to experience the taste of Rattlesnake that was soft, juicy and tender ... and yep, it was kinda like chicken. Although I had never met the Cook, I did extend my compliments for a most pleasurable First time “ Taste Experience. I tell ya, that individual really knew how to clean, section , Season and cook Rattlesnake. ( My guess is that the Cook Steam cooked it, because it wasn’t “ breaded and fried “ . That’s most likely why the piece you had was sort of “ tough and chewy, and had a flavor of fish- Chicken. ) In the West Texas area , it gets hot and steamy so that a snake would seek relief from the heat under a rock if not a cool shade or a cave or hole in the ground. They are known to live in desert and wooded areas, so it’s always a good idea to have walking sticks and a flashlight ( for night ) while walking about in areas that are not so frequented by Man. 🤠 “ Yeee- haw” ( Welcome to Texas ) 6:18

My mom used to live in Sweetwater and they have a big Rattlesnake Roundup. Sadly I never went and she's moved back to Houston so I probably won't ever get to see it. It's okay because the idea of being in a room from of snakes kind of creeps me out.
