Before you said it, I was thinking the same thing. Why hide the tape? They did the same thing in cassette players and Video players. Our first VCR was a top loader, and I could watch the tape reels turn. Anyway, I enjoy watching the repair of tape machines. Edit: that unit has a SNAFU, and it's FUBAR.

I have a Realistic Minisette 5 that has the same problem with eating tapes because its takeup spool stops with a finger touch, though both spools run true. I tried a thicker belt and that took care of the tape eating problem but made it run too slowly. I went back to a thinner belt and it eats tapes again.

So all the joy of digital with the same troubles of analog compounded? With the slightest wrong all audio is lost verses wow/flutter/pitch shift that retains the audio... Thats what i want in an important recording.

Hey Dave, can you show us how to re-lube/re-grease a VCR? My JVC GR-C1 VHS-C is struggling to load tapes and I'm wondering if the guide tracks and loading cogs need new lubricant. It loads so slowly it goes into emergency shutdown. Do you use silicone grease?
@12voltvids
@12voltvids Жыл бұрын
I believe i have done a few already. In the back catalog there will be several. I use lithium grease. That old black grease has to go. It turns to glue.

Hello I am the owner of this unit. I am going to sell it for parts. What is it worth to you? It comes with a leather case and an OEM 4.5 v SONY power supply. I am in the Houston area of Texas, the USA. If we come to terms, I will ask David to ship it directly to you, and I will send you the power supply if you need it. Regarfds, Yuri

Very costly to repair these. If it was your only player and you had hundreds of tapes but the fella that owns this has dozens of dat decks. I know because i have repaired about 10 of them so far. The Sony home deck I repaired last week was his as well.

DAT should have been left where it was intended for in a studio rack As soon as you make a mechanism that is small enough for consumer portable use they become far too fragile with parts that break or just wear out.

These were made for a specific market. To smuggle into a concert to bootleg the perfornence!
@Barbarapape

They are still not fit for purpose, and what is the point of trying to bootleg a live performance with all the noise in the background? I never was a fan of live recordings.@@12voltvids

@@Barbarapape I'm not disagreeing. There us too much to go wrong in these tiny units. A much much much better choice a tascam dap1 or teac dap20. These have robust transports, basically the same as found on the studio decks, xlr inputs and were designed for field use. Now as far as bootlegs are concerned it really depends on who it was. I have a bootleg of the Beatles recorded illegally by the then famous DJ red Robinson as he was the emcee of the show. He ran a tape recorder under the stage at empire stadium in 1964 on the only stop the Beatles ever did I n vancouver. The sound was pretty bad because all you can hear is screaming teenage girls screaming. On the other hand I have a bootleg of Frank Gambale, jazz / rock 🎸 Superman whom played with chick corea and now vital information. It was a fantastic recording and there wasn't a ton of noise because those fans, and pretty much every jazz and classical perfornence the fans are there to hear the perfornence not make a bunch of noise except for when they are invited to make noise. 5 seconds after the last note fades away. They they quiet down and the performers wait for the audiences attention. Saw return to forever reunion about a dozen years ago. Wish I had the balls to record it because it was a fantastic over the top perfornence.

Tascam have been the goto brand for studio quality gear for many years. I have one of their CD recorders and it realy puts the consumer ones to shame. Re recording live venues, with the right gear and an audience that respects the performers you can get some great sounds. I have been to many live performances over the years a few very good, some OK but also a few bad ones. The worst of all was one by Mark Knopfler in Manchester, the mixing desk was badly placed at the back of the hall, and the sound system was way overloaded, all you could hear was distortion, so i walked out and complained, they gave me a refund, i bet those that stayed had hearing problems for a while.@@12voltvids

finally these swanky SONY Audio DAT (portable) technology was top engineering design - but unfortunately highly non robust and expensive. Mini Disk MD was the solution in Audio Technology. Unfortunately computer technology soon made it obsolete at all. Highest respect to SONY Corp. nevertheless.

Doubt it. Didn't see any sign of impact on the cabinet that would indicate this. Just old age, plastic shrinkage and warpage. These old units have lasted far longer then they were ever designed to last.
