Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, former Morris Day and The Time members who grew up with Prince. In fact Prince replaced O'Neal with Morris Day to create The Time out of local band Flyte Time. Criticize is the song they'll like the best, but you're right that she will like Saturday Love the most.

Years back I went to a joint headline concert of Barry White and Earth Wind & Fire. Barry had to pull out at the last minute because of ill health. It was announced at the packed concert. You can imagine the disappointment in the crowd. As a replacement, Alexander O'Neal was announced. Silence in the crowd. He came on stage, on his own, no band, no backing singers, just him in his suit and a microphone. He belted out his hits, dripping in sweat, got the crowd singing, dancing and cheering, and set everyone up for EWF. The guy was a machine, and turned around a crowd disappointed that Barry White didn't show.

Rob Squad, you guys absolutely nailed it with the review of Alexander O'Neal's song 'Fake'! What a thrill it was to witness such an iconic artist in action. I'll never forget the moment I got to hit the stage and dance alongside him at one of his gigs, and when he reached out to shake my hand, it was pure magic. Growing up in the UK during the 80s and 90s, his music was the soundtrack to countless memories. As he embarks on his farewell tour this year, it's a bittersweet moment for us all. His contribution to the industry and the way he became part of the fabric of British culture is simply remarkable. I'm eagerly anticipating your future explorations of his discography, Some other AO classics "Criticize" "If You Were Here Tonight" "Saturday Love" (with Cherrelle) "Never Knew Love Like This" "What's Missing" "Sunshine" "The Lovers" "All True Man" "A Broken Heart Can Mend" “Innocent”

The Legendary Alexander is known as the Ladies Man ! 😘 Have seen Alex live in the UK a fair few times, really great live .... He was probably bigger in the UK than the U.S. and he has a great following. His other Masterpieces include "What's Missing" .... "Criticize" .... The absolute epic "If You Were Here Tonight" (That one is a cert for you to review, please ! ... What a Ballad) .... "All True Man" and his brilliant duets with Cherrelle "Saturday Love" and "Never Knew Love Like This" .... A great artist indeed and he was originally one of Prince's backing singers 👏😉

I can't believe that in all this time you guys haven't played Alexander O'Neal before. You will definitely like his music. He was the original lead singer of The Time (when they were called Flyte Tyme), but he said he was too hung up on money for Prince's liking, so he was replaced by Morris Day. Check out "Innocent" (the album version if you can), "You Were Meant to Be My Lady (Not My Girl)," "Sunshine," "Criticize," "Used," "Somebody (Changed Your Mind)," and lots more. You will also like "The Rain," by Oran "Juice" Jones, especially when he tells his new ex about herself and sends her packing

"Can I get some NASTY bass! It's gonna be kind of right tonight!" Those lines lead into "Fake" the song the shook up the nightclub scene! That's the Minneapolis sound at its finest! I had the pleasure of seeing Alexander (Oh So Good) O'Neal perform this and other songs in venues around the Twin Cities including If you were here tonight, Criticize, What's missing, Innocent and Never Knew Love Like This (Both of these songs with Cherrelle)! Alexander was in the group Flyte Time with Jam and Lewis back in the day...but he was replaced by Morris Day...later becoming "The Time." Another cool fact, Cynthia Johnson was also in Flyte Time. She left the group, went solo and had a Mega Hit "FunkyTown" which was recorded here in Minneapolis! Alexander and Cherrelle are Golden on "Saturday Love" an amazing, up-tempo duet, reaching #2 on the R&B chart and #26 on the Hot-100!! Great memories! 😊👏🏾🎤🎶🎸🥁🎹💯

When I met my wife in The late 80s I was into punk and new wave and she was into Stevie Wonders, Luther Vandross and Alexander O’Neil and we went to see him live a number of times at Wembley, London. His thing was to invite an audience member up on stage and serenade her (of course) and then jump off the stage and run down the aisles and around the audience. My wife was so excited that she actually got to touch him on one of these audience laps. Do ‘Criticize’ next.

A Jam and Lewis production classic!! Alexander O'neal was the original lead singer of the Time, whom you have played before. They were known as Flyte Tyme back then and when Prince got involved with getting them a recording contract, there was a falling out regarding money and Alexander was removed as lead singer and Morris Day was put in his place! Alexander became a great soul singer in the eighties and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis from the Time, produced the bulk of his hits with Fake being one of them!

The Minneapolis sound in the 80s was everything. Producers Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis were members of The Time that was formed by Prince. Prince wrote a number of the group's hits. Jam and Lewis wrote many of Janet Jackson's hits as well as other artists like Alexander O'Neal, Cherelle, and The SOS Band. Prince fired Jam and Lewis from The Time when they were working on The SOS Band's album because they missed a concert date due to a rare snowstorm in Atlanta. That departure led to them being one of the biggest hit making duos of that time.

Alexander O'Neal produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis was an incredible collaboration. Check out his song, Innocent, it has a similar vibe. He also had two duets with Cherelle. Check out her song You Look Good to Me. Jam and Lewis produced a lot of Janet Jackson's music and when she was ready to put together her new album, they wanted $1 million's to produce it. She refused and they gave the music to Cherelle instead. You Look Good to Me was on that album. Eventually she came back to Jam and Lewis and paid their price. That's how good they are!

So many R&B artists of the 80s get overlooked though their music is what everyone lives and ither style themselves after. Early Alex when he was with The Time (they may not even had been called that then), you can clearly hear where Bruno Mars got his style from.

That was real banger in the clubs those days. But what you also have to do is "Criticize".

You need to go down this whole list of hits with Jam + Lewis. They basically defined R & B hits, and pop hits, throughout the 80s/90s. Probably the most prolific songwriters of that Era, "No cap!" You don't understand how influential these two were to a generation. It's like we were hearing a song written by them every other week: •The Time [a band of which they were members] •SOS band •Human League •Klymaxx (their first album -so underrated! ) •Change •Alexander O' Neil •Cherelle (A MUST for female Friday!) •Janet Jackson (every single one of her albums/hits) •New Edition (from 1988-98) •Sounds of Blackness •Cheryl Lynn (Encore) •Patty Austin (In the Heat of Heat) •Soul 2 Soul Many others I can't even think of. Thr whole Minneapolis Sound - with them and Prince - was boss!

Alexander O'Neal was absolutely huge in the UK. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis produced this R&B classic!

Alexander was supposed to be in the band the Time. He was in that Minneapolis scene in the early days. Morris Day ended up becoming the lead singer (Morris was a drummer) because Alexander and Prince supposedly had a falling out.

Alexander O'Neal's whole album was produced by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis of Flyte Time Productions. They are former members of The Time with Morris Day. When the word got out that they were producing on the side, Prince fired them from the band. From that point, they went into music peoduction full time. Flyte Time has a distinctive sound in that they're heavily layered sound of electronic instruments. Yet they manage not to induce ear fatigue and muddy the music or its impact. They rose to prominence in the mid 80s.They worked on the albums by The S.O.S. Band, Janet Jackson's Control thru at least the Velvet Rope Album. They also produced half of Johnny Gill's album, where Rub You the Right Way was the smash single. They also produced the whole N.E. Heartbreak for New Edition. They also produced music for Cherelle. They have a boatload of singles, such as Diamonds and Making Love in the Rain by Herb Alpert, and Tender Love by the Force M.D.S. In this video, there are several members of The Time on the stage. Jerome, a mascot of sorts for the Minneapolis sound, is up to his usual antics and introducing a new dance.
