Yup, they made their own beats. So old school that they recorded the beat to tape and then threaded it through the machine backwards. And none other than Public Enemy’s Chuck D said that hip-hop’s “dirty little secret” was that “these three skinny white guys had better beats than any of the rest of us.”

This beat is actually a bass drop reversed. They did that often on many of their tracks on ILL. Lots of sampling. Another fun fact, this album is the most sampled Album in the world. You can find many riffs, drum lines and scratches used on this album in hundreds of other music tracks.
@dard4642
@dard4642 2 жыл бұрын
Yep. DJ Run had programmed a beat and recorded it on a 4-track cassette recorder. If you play that cassette on the wrong side, it plays two of the tracks backwards. They accidentally put the tape in wrong and it played the kick drum backwards. They liked it and reprogrammed the whole beat to play backwards. The funny thing is, this reverse beat has been sampled several times but no one else has reversed a beat. It's a trick that only can be used once without sounding like theft, which, as far as I know, is the only DJ technique like that. Like imagine if no one could transform except for the DJ who created it.

"Pauls Boutique", their second album is the one you're thinking of as being the most sampled album ever. Youre head will explode trying to keep up with all of em. They were able to do this because at that time there were little to no restrictions on sampling in the industry. If I'm not mistaken "Paul's Boutique" is the album that actually prompted artists to start keeping tabs on their music re sampling.

MCA took a reel to reel track of roland 808 bass track and figured out how to run the tape through the player backwards. So they recorded the reverse Roland 808 bass track to another reel so they could play that one forwards on any other machine. Later years people figured how to get machines to create this sound on their own. So Beastie Boys contributed this to Rap/Hip-Hop.

The beats on this record were so sick. They shared a Roland TR-808 drum machine with RUN-DMC, who were recording their Raising Hell album at the same time. But MCA was the guy working on how to run shit backwards, so that's where a lot of these sounds come from. May he rest in power. Definitely check out the entire Paul's Boutique record, as well as Check Your Head. There isn't a bad song on either. But maybe start with Shake Your Rump and then let me know your thoughts.

MCA made this beat on his 8-track recorder in the kitchen of his apartment.. he used actual recording tape reversed as a loop.. several feet of tape wrapped around things like a chair to play back, backwards in this case, to be recorded on the proper 8-track tape recorder. mid 80's madness. anything that serves the song

That beat was made by Jam Master J (Run DMC's dj). After he made it and gave it to the Beastie Boys, they took it back to the studio to lay some rhymes over it. Well, some one put the tape on backwards (old school reel to reel) by accident, and they decided to leave it that way

To get that backwards beat sample on a turn table, you have to get a roll of packing tape, place in center of the turn table, then take the needle cartridge remove and place upside-down, then adjust the tone arm weight to lift the needle upwards. After you get the vinyl centered, weighed down and the needle placed, you are officially spinning in reverse.

This is one of the songs they stopped performing due to its violence, misogyny, and homophobia. What's funny is I probably haven't heard it since the early 90's and I still remembered all the lyrics. This album was HUGE in my grade school. There was one kid who always brought his radio to school and he'd blast all the latest rap records. My cousin was a DJ and this was huge in the clubs. This was Rhode Island and almost all of the kids in my grade school were white save for one but it didn't matter. Once everyone got into the Beasties they got into artists like Whodini, Run-DMC, the Sugarhill Gang, Kool Moe Dee, and LL Cool J. By the time I graduated high school in '92 you were more likely to have people into a mix of genres instead of just listening to one.
