Okay, I've been waiting for you all to realize this. Robin makes the BeeGees what it is. You cannot have the BeeGees sound without Robin at all. The timber and purity of his voice is crazy. He was always overshadowed by Barry, which is why Robin and Barry struggled a lot in their relationship. I think Robin had resentment. I grew up listening to the BeeGees and I will tell you that they were played in my house from the very beginning and through the disco phase. My parents loved them throughout. My mom is 78 and she still listens to the BeeGees all the time. It makes her feel better when she's down. Do not sleep on Robin.

The Bee Gees had a whole career in the 60s folk genre. By the time disco came around, they were basically forgotten by a lot of people. Disco was actually their second surge of success. A lot of their early fans weren't into disco and a lot of disco fans weren't into folk, so there wasnt a lot of crossover in that respect.

@@The_Real_RG3 Agree and his voice also doesn't fit most songs either, for parts yes, but not for the main vocal. Likewise, his falsetto singing wasn't nice. There is only one song in which he sings the lead part in falsetto, "Living together" and there is a KZbin video with his voice isolated. This sounds really unpleasant and you can hear the difference to Barry's falsetto extremely clearly (from which his falsetto is also available "isolated")!!! Oh, and Barry said once in an interview that Robin often has changed his voice and Barry couldn`t understand WHY, maybe thats the reason I very often don`t like it and sometimes (for whom the bell ..., bodyguard, kiss of life...) When the Bee Gees went "disco" (it was actually R&B-based), they lost many fans, but gained millions of new ones, and eventually, all of the fans were able to reconcile the two phases as part of a whole incredible body of work. One of the reasons the group broke up temporarily in the late 60s is because Robin decided he could be a star without his brothers, and he did have a substantial solo career, but eventually came back to the group and they made history together.

Amber I think the one piece missing from your analysis is the fact the Gibbs were, probably above all else, song writers. They wrote hundreds of the most popular pop songs sung by other artists. So, that's another reason why their music and singing talent easily adapts to different eras--good writres can write to fit different eras but also write in a way that's timeless at the same time.

It was quite a shock when we heard the BEE GEES doing disco. It was unbelievable, but they were so good and it grew on us quickly.

This was the music of my childhood. I am 63. The disco Bee Gees came later. It was almost a true second career and it was a very different sound. Music was somehow more innocent in the 60’s. The bands were all wearing matching suits like the Beatles did. This song is on my playlist for when I am feeling down. My sad playlist. Robin Gibb is the soulful one in the group.

I loved the BeeGees in every decade, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, 2000’s

Great reaction to one of my top favorite Bee Gees songs of all time. I like all of their musical periods, even the much neglected post-disco Bee Gees. This song, I seem to remember reading that Robin wrote this song while feeling very depressed, maybe even suicidal depression. It is a sad song. But so damn beautiful.

I remember hearing or reading of this also.... So sad but, thank God he was okay and he was there to sing this beautiful sad song. RIP Robin

This is one of their 'classics.' I think more greats from the early years, you've not yet reacted to, are: I've Gotta Get a Message To You __ Too Love Somebody __ Holiday __ Spicks and Specks.

Hey guys, "To Love Somebody" is an early Bee Gees song that you have to listen to. I think it's their best early song. And I'm a longtime fan who believes the Bee Gees didn't jump into Disco; Disco jumped into the Bee Gees. Their music was their music, it was just so darn good that you had to get up and dance to it.

If you’re a Bee Gees fan it doesn’t matter which time they’re in, you love them. Always a fan never backed down. And yes, the White Sox got what they deserved participating in killing disco lol

That's how I feel about their music. All the people who stopped listening because their music became more r&b sounding, is just absurd.

If you watch the live version, he hits all those notes, every single time. Truly magical talent.

The Bee Gees were an amazing group all the way through their tenure. Through every change they excelled and brought something to the table that blew us away.

Chills. Robin's vocals on this song gives me chills. "And The Sun Will Shine" is one of my fav Robin vocals (very poetic). Love the Bee Gees. All eras, all brothers, all genres.

I’m with Amber; I prefer the early Bee Gees; Robin did a lot of lead singing in the early years; I always remember him cupping his hand to one ear. You should check out “I’ve Got To Get A Message To You”, that’s another early one!

I was a 14-year-old freshman in high school when this song " I Started A Joke" came out in (1968). Robin Gibb sang the lead here and it was one of the best songs of 1968. Robin sang lead for the Bee Gees back during their heydays of the 60's with songs like 1. Massachusetts (1967). 2. To Love Somebody (1967). 3.New York Mining Disaster 1941 (1967). 4. I've Got To Get A Message To You (1968). The sad truth of living and dying alone. This song always pulled at my heart strings. I'm bias towards the Bee Gess of the 60's.

I never thought of their music as "Disco". It was just the Bee Gees. ❤ I love ALL their music! And, yes, thank you for this....have been waiting a while for you to react to it!❤

There was a controversy over who should be the Bee Gees lead singer (between Barry and Robin) during this time period - as you can see Robin is an OUTSTANDING singer!

Robin had the high voice in early songs and it wasn't until the disco-type of song that Barry discovered his own great falsetto.

As you marvel at robins voice, dont forget, 1968. Robin and maurice were 18 until december 22 of that year. 18. Lonely days was the first bg song I fell in love with. I was 5 years old so I didn't know about who sang what songs. I just loved it. Then run to me came out and I fell in love with that one, too.then nights on Broadway and fanny be tender, and I didn't know they were the same group. I thought jive talking was earth wind fire or something. I made a mixed tape of my fave songs off the radio and I had several bg songs on it. My brother heard me playing it and poked his head in my door and said wow you really like the bee gees don't you. That was when I first realized all these songs I loved were by the same group. When sat night fev came out, I loved it all even more. Lonely days mesmerized me and they've had that affect on me ever since, no matter what period, style or genre.

Their very last single & video from 2001, "This Is Where I Came In", also has Robin singing mostly lead (but not entirely), but in a very different sound from the usual Bee Gees music catalog. It was the last single from their last album before Maurice died unexpectedly. It remains one of my favorite Bee Gees songs... just because of Robin's great voice and the different but great musical arrangement. Looking forward to whenever you get a chance to react to it.

Thank you for starting to check out the twins' contributions as writers and singers. Robin sang many early leads. Barry did the "disco" era. This song is considered Robin's creation. He was a loner and felt people misunderstood him. The video shows bizarre human cutouts and mirrors. Do we see people as they really are or distorted like in fun house mirrors? It was very meaningful to him and he had it played at his funeral. While mainly a balladeer, as that suited his voice, he did do upbeat songs like "When he's gone" and "Fallen angel" and his solo hit "Juliet" (live in Berlin with the Bee Gees). He did limited falsetto in the disco era (Living Together). Maurice did some great leads too, "Above and beyond", Man in the middle", Closer than close", "Hold her in your hand" and his harmonies and musicianship superb. Check out their even earlier stuff like "Wine and Women" or "Little band of gold" (Aussie TV, Bandstand) to see their evolution from kids to adults. Their growth and diversity is amazing. It was Robin's voice that first made me a fan in 1967. I did drop them when the "disco" era became over-exposed but returned later but even their disco era lyrics and vocals were far superior to most of the awful disco put out by others that torpedoed disco and took their career with it.
