@@allanjuhl9574- somewhere off the coast of Mexico apparently. Kirsty's family spent some time attempting to bring the millionaire owner of the boat to justice, but they were blocked from doing so as the president of Mexico was a personal friend of the boat owner and wouldn't allow any prosecution to go ahead. There was a UK TV documentary about all that some years ago now.

The end of the song is the reason it is called "Fairytale" of New York. It is about the dreams of immigrants to New York, and what happens when the dreams collide with the reality that is all too common- drug abuse, destitution, and the end of dreams. It is an incredible song- the music, especially the hook, feels triumphant, but the lyrics are so real. Americans (I am American) are not often exposed to this- I was lucky. I actually saw a cover of it on a Bill Murray Christmas special, and I loved it so much I searched out the original. i believe it is consistently voted the SECOND best Christmas song of all time in Europe. No idea what #1 is.

I think it was UK #1 for 2023 Christmas after Shane's passing for the 1st time, after being in the top 5 for 40 years. Any UK citizen has heard this for Christmas since childhood. I was just old enough for The Pogues to be part of my US high school life as a "freak" because that's what the 'regular' kids would call those of us who ate lunch at the flagpole and had asymmetrical, blue hair. 🤣 Was so f@cking Pretty In Pink. But this has been my favorite Christmas song since then.

The greatest Christmas song of all time - and yes, one of the saddest. Pogues are amazing - "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" is also amazing and terribly sad. "Dirty Old Town" & "The Old Main Drag" are incredible. I saw the Pogues after they booted Shane (his alcoholism was out of control and he wasn't capable of singing for a time) - and they had Joe Strummer (lead singer for the Clash) singing in Shane's place - incredible show.

I saw them in a triple show at Wolf Trap (VA) around 1990 with Mojo Nixon and the Violent Femmes. Shane was so incoherent during the Pogues's set that they took about a 10 minute unscheduled break and came back with Mojo Nixon singing. Shane was probably puking backstage by that point.

Hehe, funny to see you guys doing a "first time reaction" to this; over here in the UK this has been one of the biggest and most popular Christmas songs ever since it came out, so literally everyone has heard it! It's a brilliant, brilliant song. Also, Alex is spot on with explanation of the lyrics; the song is about the male character spending a Christmas Eve drunk in prison - "It was Christmas Eve, babe, in the drunk tank" - and thinking back over his relationship with the woman in the song - "I turned my face away and dreamed about you" - and how it's slowly soured and broken down, but he's still trying to keep her with his empty promises of how things will eventually turn back for the good - "this year's for me and you .. I can see a better time when all our dreams come true". That first slow verse sets the "current day" scene; then the upbeat section is a recap of their meeting, early love, and now failing relationship; and the final slow verse I would interpret as detailing the final breaking of their relationship (perhaps back to the current day or not many days prior, after all, there's a reason he's found himself stone-drunk and in prison on Christmas Eve); and the chorus drives home the contrast of emotion throughout the song as the bells of Christmas morning accompany first young love, then a couple's bitter fighting, and now his drunken longing for her return while they - the bells - remain the only constant thing throughout. PS. the band name is pronounced with an Oh sound in the middle, like rogue, it's not Pog like Andy was saying. PPS. this song is 100% a nailed on, certified, official S tier song; you're understandably just lacking the culture and context for it.

Hey A&A. First, have to revoke your cool cards for this one. The band's name is pronounced as Pōh-gues. And their music is as Irish as could be. 😄 The original name of the band was 'Pogue Mahone', which means "Kiss my arse". The song is told from the experience of Irish immigrants who landed in NYC. (There are a ton of stories to be told out of that experience.) This is a great song. And it is *the* #1 Xmas song in Ireland and England, maybe the whole UK, at holiday time. I strongly recommend The Pogues "If I Should Fall from Grace With God" for a reaction from you guys. Anyways, you guys are still mostly cool. 😁 Peace, dudes. R.I.P. Kirsty. R.I.P. Shane.

You need to watch the video of it. You get a real feel for the song. Plus Matt Dillon plays a cop who throws Shane Magowan in the drunk tank. So damn beautiful and all over Ireland and here in the UK, as soon as this song starts playing at Christmas time, we go all nostalgic, and feel warm and full of love (usually). Saw them in the 90s in Cincinnati Ohio with the Violent Femmes. I think Shane had all his teeth, I was lucky enough to get up front to watch Shane drink and sing all night. Freakin awesome! The femmes were great too!

You guys should do "The Sick Bed of Cúchulainn". RIP Shane. You were the soundtrack to far too much reckless drinking in my 20's.

Oh possibly not until they've read some Irish Celtic Mythology in preparation - If they can't pronounce "Pogues", "McGowan" or"MacColl" they'd have no bloody chance managing "Cúchulainn"! (That gutteral 'ch' in the middle would totally confuse them.)

@DaveBartlett We'll probably be waiting forever if they have a reading assignment first. Anyway I've never read any of it and I don't have any Irish in my blood, and it's still one of my favorite albums. They aren't going to grow if they don't try new things, and they've been leaning too heavily into boring soft rock and easy listening stuff lately.

I saw them a few times (NYC) including this albums tour. It was nuts back then to even survive a Pogues show. The 80's were a lot. The Pogues were unforgettable. The fans were very very drunk.

RIP Shane MCGowan, the pride of Ireland. If you want to know what the Pogues represented, look up Shane's funeral on KZbin, and see who was there. He was the closest they had to royalty.

The Pogues have several great albums and songs. Amazing story telling about wars, life and death, hauntings, celebration, religion, drinking, love and loss, so on and so on. Sometimes all in the same song. Some of the lyrics can be sad, and sometimes really viscous. Traditional Irish music with a punk rock attitude. Shane sings the majority of the songs but they have others in the band that take lead on vocals which I personally love that dynamic in a band.

yes this is a very dark Christmas song (imagine if Clarence had never saved James Stewart in 'It's a wonderful life'). It is also and maybe for the very same reason one of the the UK's favourite Christmas secular songs. As others have noted the female voice is the utterly wonderful, wonderful Kirsty MacColl. Her father was Ewan MacColl a fervent trade unionist and socialist activist who was at the forefront of the renewal in interest in folk music in the mid 20th century. He also wrote famous songs like 'Dirty Old Town' and 'The First Time Ever I saw Your Face.' He was also an early very significant early musical influence on the young Kate Bush. This is a classic song. Bleak, but brilliant.

'Thousands are Sailing' is the real tear jerker on this album for me...... Shane, like Tom Waits, has a very soft side that gets buried under all the gruff. If I Should Fall From Grace With God, is an exceptional album. (The song starts with him in the Drunk Tank (jail) on Xmas eve!)

To point out song recs for The Pogues (POH-gues), I strongly recommend "If I Should Fall from Grace With God". Keep the lyrics handy because any 1st time listener could not keep up. I also recommend "Dirty Old Town". The Pogues wrote most of their songs, but this particular song is a cover. It's a great song nonetheless.

You definitely listened to this song during your 'Christmas song' live stream and I remember Andy really not liking Shane MacGowan's vocal delivery. I'm so glad you got to hear it again and to really get to appreciate it this time round. You also listened to and didn't like Merry Xmas Everybody by Slade (who also sang Cum on Feel the Noize) which is another song that I think deserves a second listen now that you know Slade.

The Pogues are an iconic Irish band that perfectly blended the sound of the early punk era with the traditional Irish folk songs they grew up on. You need to listen to The Pogues and The Dubliners performing The Irish Rover....Shane and Ronnie Drew have two of the most iconic voices in Irish music.

An amusing titbit from Wikipedia about the reference to the NYPD Choir:- "The boys of the NYPD choir still singing 'Galway Bay'". In reality, the NYPD does not have a choir, the closest thing being the NYPD Pipes and Drums who are featured in the video for the song. The NYPD Pipes and Drums did not know "Galway Bay" and so sang a song that all of them knew the words to - the "Mickey Mouse March", the theme tune for The Mickey Mouse Club television series. The footage was then slowed down and shown in brief sections to disguise the fact the Pipes and Drums were singing a different song.... ....the Pipes and Drums had been drinking on the coach that brought them to the video shoot, and by the time they arrived they were more drunk than the band, refusing to work unless they were supplied with more alcohol.
