Greg, do not hesitate to shorten the magazine spring on these! It's trivially easy and has zero downside. The thing is they use the 24" version spring on all, including the 20" and 16" versions. Meaning that you are not merely making loading easier (or actually "reasonable") but also likely gaining capacity of 1 or 2. And a metal mag follower is also a nice easy upgrade while you're at it. Brass and steel are widely available, probably aluminum also. Other than that these are fun!

What advantage is a metal magazine follower? It's a non-stressed part.
@languagesource355
@languagesource355 5 ай бұрын
@@Nick-wn1xw I'm sure there are a few reasons. It's not stressed, but it does rub, which creates plastic dust in there. Also, in a cold environment, when the tube shrinks, the plastic follower could get tighter as it won't shrink as much. Metal on metal is just more... time-tested :)

A few years ago I bought a 16"-barrel blued steel Rossi. Action is smooth, feeding reliable, accuracy (with heavy bullets) is good. I replaced the buckhorn rear sight with a Marble's Bullseye sight---much better for my old eyes. I don't hesitate to "improve" my firearms, but didn't feel the need to mess with this one.

I have the same 92. I changed my front sight to a light weave green fiber optic. I like it a lot better now. The brass bead fell off of mine while shipping to my FFL. Love this lever gun. I smoothed out my receiver side of the loading gate. Not so sharp now. More comfortable to load now. Great video. Thanks again.

Congratulations Greg on your new acquisition! That's a good looking rifle. I don't own a lever gun yet but I definitely think they are cool (like all of us who grew up watching the old westerns). I've always thought a lever gun would make a pretty good truck/trunk gun as you look less like a mass shooter and more like a citizen trying to help stop one. That was not a bad group for a new gun.

Mine works perdectly with .357 cartridges, but has a few problems with .38. It is at least a very fun carbine. And the fact that others consider it as an "old rifle" may be an advantage too. Glad to see you have a Rossi 357Mag levergun! 👍 It'll smooth out soon, and you'll enjoy it more and more. I'm looking forward to seeing more of you with this weapon in the future. 👍 I've had a 20" octagonal barrel 357Mag R92, with the casehardend frame and hardware with the deep curved buttplate. Supurb accurcy and a great hog killing rifle. I'm told this particular model is no longer produced. Its 10 years old and and still looks brand new. Even though I have a Henry Big Boy in 45 Colt, which is quite nice, my "go to" levergun is the Rossi 357mag. It just flat out shoots like a dream.😁 Of course, the 45 Colt Henry Big Boy is not too shabby itself.😉

@anangryranger
@anangryranger 5 ай бұрын
@@Nick-wn1xw Yup, you're quite right! I was a professional gunsmith for 30 years, and could easily "go inside" the weapon and smooth everything for a slick action. However, I prefer to simply fire the weapon some, and allow the internal parts to "mate" from use. In doing so, the tolerances will be better, as one can remove a tough too much metal, making for a sloppy result. An unaltered break-in creates results if one is patient. 😏

A rail for a red dot up top and a forend I can attach a light to are going to be modifications to one of them. I do dislike the buckhorn sights they come with though. A dremel took care of the ears on them for a sight picture I much prefer. Hope you like yours. They do get slicker the more you use them. Good reason to burn powder!

I looked at all the videos I could find on the Rossi revolver. It appears, sadly, a Lemon that got by Q.C.! I want this lever gun because I have a multitude of friends that bought them and I have a chance to fire a couple. Yep, loading gate is "Harsh" until that is smoothed down. Congratulations Greg! Those R92s are very good guns. The 1892 they are based on to me seem very well balanced and the slimmer forestock can be nice compared to the robustness of the Henry. I have a Henry Big Boy carbine in .357/.38 and it is heavier than my R92 rifle in the same caliber. The Rossis are nicely lighter. Great you got the stainless. Anyway, that seems like a decent lever gun. I'd like to see how you progress with it. My first lever gun was a Henry 22. You had to pull out the spring thing and load it through the tube. Well that sucker likes to fall out! I'll take a proper loading gate any day. For polishing those sharp edges, go with as fine a set of jewelers stones as possible. No Dremel! ;-). Then go with a decent polishing compound to clean up. Less is more.

Since the pandemic ended, these Rossi 92s are about the only lever guns I've seen for sale, at least for .357/.38, .44 Mag and .45 Colt. The consensus seems to be that these guns can be upgraded later since they're based on the classic Winchester design. There are a 16" and 20" in .357/.38 at a local store, and they're a lot cheaper than an equivalent from Henry, Uberti or Winchester.

I recommend replacing all the springs. I replaced the stock magazine spring in my new 24" SS Oct barrel Rossi R92 with an after market Cowboy Action Stainless Steel spring. Spring was ordered by barrel length and is 'finished' on both ends< the last 2-3 turns are nice and close forming a flat contact surface with the magazine follower. The stock spring was not 'finished' on either end, so it left a nice sharp pointy end pushing on the plastic magazine follower. Dooming the plastic follower to failure down the road. With the aftermarket mag spring installed, loading magazine with 10 is a way easier. I haven't bothered to try loading 12 - 357Mag or 38Spl's yet, screws up my ammo box. . lol. I've installed 3 of 4 pieces of a Cowboy Action receiver spring set. The trigger, hammer & lever plunger springs were no problem, I just can't get the ejector spring stay in place during reassembly, I have a Winchester 92 ejector spring on order. ATM the stock ejector spring is launching the brass into a low earth orbit, makes it hard to recover the brass. For hunting, my bullet of choice in my carbine is Hornadys 158gr FN-XTP #35780. I'm pushing them around 1800fps in my 18.5" Marlin 1894c, should be around 1875-1900fps in the new longer 24" Rossi R92. I've got a Marble Tang Peep, Marble Folding Rear sights and 200 pieces of 357 StarLine Brass, 'In the Mail'. Plan is to 'zero' the Folding Rear @ 75yds & Tang Peep @ 150yds. Can't wait for some warm weather gong ringing.

Yes, the Rossi/Taurus/Braztech customer service are very cordial. And that's about where it ends. Had a missing front sight brass bead on brand new R92 and was promised a replacement several times and nothing. Finally they told me they "don't have any". There are certainly some good values to be picked up with Taurus/Rossi, but just think of them as buying used out-of-production guns where you'll be on your own. That way - no disappointment and no surprises. Still, R92 are a great option for the poors to have a lever gun in 357, 44mag and 45C. Although with current pricing I think that Henry is starting to make more sense with their side gate models.

When loading a lever action rifle only insert the first cartridge up to the edge of the loading gate. Use succeeding cartridges to push the cartridge in front of it the remainder of the way into the loading gate. That way you only have to get your thumb dragged over those sharp edges one time.

Beautiful rifle, I have a blued 20" version. I had my gunsmith put a sling on it. He's a young man, and likes his tactical guns. When I picked it up, he said "BTW, if you ever want to sell this, let me know first. 😊

Bought a gorgeous 20" stainless with nice grey striped stock and pic rail back in April. Didn't get to shoot it until Thanksgiving. 10 rds with no problem. Then it stopped feeding rounds into the chamber. Hope to contact Rossi tomorrow. Where the heck do I find a box big enough to ship it??!! Took me years to get one. LOVE Lever Rifles.

Be careful. My friend sent in his levergun and they returned it with missing parts and said that they were out of spec but couldn't fix it because they didn't have the replacement parts. What the heck is he supposed to do with an incomplete rifle that he can't source parts for? Just give him all the parts back and maybe he'd be able to do some gunsmithing to get it to work.

No problem. People have had bad experiences with Rossi, Taurus and RIA firearms. It goes with the territory. On the other hand some have issues with S&W, Colt, Ruger and other higher dollar brands. Often it goes unreported for fear of being shamed by the fan boys. Too, no one likes to admit they paid mucho dinero for an expensive gun and it wasn't up to snuff. Poor QC goes across the board these days. But, I feel less agreaved at a less expensive gun that takes a hike, as opposed to a more expensive gun that does. @@christopherbishop4927

I bought one several years ago 16" blued. It was fairly stiff so I took it apart and cleaned all of the factory grease out. I don't know what kind of grease they used but, it was more like sticky wax. I re greased everything my self with gun grease. It worked much smoother. Even though it's not a Henry it looks good. Nice gun!

Doggone-it Greg I have been trying to resist the urge to buy one of those rifles and you ain't helping.😂 My wife would probably say I really don't need another levergun since I already have 7 but I would have to disagree because I don't have one in 357. My experience with Rossi has been sketchy. I have the R92 24" octagonal barrel rifle in 44 that I had to send back twice but they eventually sent me a new one that seems good so far and I have a Rio Bravo 22lr which is a very accurate little rifle but it has feeding issues. I will be interested to hear your opinion after you put some more rounds down range. Merry Christmas to you and your family.

At a certain age men mature and stop dismissing lever guns as quaint, or even goofy, antiques and comes to appreciate them for what they are. They're not as optimal as an AR in some situations but they fulfill a lot of applications. I'm fond of the Henry X series that look like space cowboy tactical rifles. They're not as handsome but I won't feel like I might scuff a bronze and wood display piece using it. Plus I can put a red dot on it and a flashlight if necessary. Good to hear the Rossi might be an easy fix.

Get them sights dialed in, and it would probably be pretty handy... I might be interested in one like that in 44 Special/44 Magnum Lever Gun.... I'll have to look into them... Just as long as they don't have them all "Lawyered Up" with Cross Bolt Safety's and that kinda junk..... I would go with a Blued Version... Unless the "Shiney Ones" are Stainless... I'm not into Chrome and Nickel Finishes on new guns... In my experience it don't last... Always chips and peels... Anyhow, Good Video!

DO NOT BUY A ROSSI! They have terrible customer service. My friend had a model 92 that was out of spec and wouldnt chamber a round correctly. So he sent them the rifle and they kept it for 6 months and returned it without the bolt. They said the gun was out of spec and they dont make the replacement part anymore and they couldnt return a defective rifle due to liability. They didnt fix or replace the rifle AND returned it with missing parts! Thats bullshit. At least return the complete rifle and make you sign a waiver so you cant sue them. What is he supposed to do with an incomplete rifle now? If rossi cant source the replacement parts what makes them think that he will be able to!?

I concur. Similar experience with their support, albeit not as outrageous. I have more good than bad experience with Taurus/Rossi, but I won't be buying them ever again, unless used at good price and with full understanding that I'm "on my own". That price better be worth it. The new batches of Rossi leverguns are not as affordable as they used to be, making Henry side gates look all that more attractive. And with Henry you can get the all-weather polymer furniture or their wood models are American walnut and extremely nice. And no stupid external safeties, not even half-cock, just something like a transfer bar on a modern revolver, so a hammer can safely rest on a chambered round AND you can't even have an unintended discharge if the hammer slips while cocking - only if you intentionally press the trigger. Rossis do look like Winchester 92, while Henry look like Henry (well, somewhat like a Marlin, but not exactly).

Sharing a bad experience is legitimate. Emotional outbursts aimed at a brand aren't. I've had crappy experiences with Taurus, but I could also say the same about S&W, Ruger and Rock Island Armory. But there again, I have had good examples of all four brands. Currently I own two of the 92's. Neither are Henrys, and definitely not the quality of an old school Marlin, but so far they've proved to be decent guns. Like anything else in life you take your chances.
