Peachicks are very fragile and susceptible to parasites for the first several months. Many professional peafowl breeders say not to put peachicks on the ground until they’re about 4 months old. When we incubate eggs, we wait until they’re 4 months old to put them outside. Being in with chickens can also cause issues sometimes due to chickens spreading diseases to peacocks that the chickens themselves are just carrying, but not necessarily made sick by. So far we have not been successful at getting white peachicks to adulthood. We bought two last year and they did fine for several months, then both died very suddenly a few weeks apart. We are trying again this year. We have two more white peachicks that are about a month old now.

This was an issue I’ve been having. It looks like coccidia/botulism to me. When they get coccidia, they tend to get weakened and it allows botulism bacteria to inhabit the gut. It can cause necrosis within the bird and if it’s that far along, it’s too late. You may also see paralysis before the bird finally succumbs and dies. Try to get a fecal test. Vets in my area do them for $30, just make sure it’s a vet that is comfortable with poultry and knows what they’re talking about. I had a vet giving me sulfa-drugs that were not working for awhile until I was told by another vet that wasn’t going to help my issue. The wings are dropped, eyes closed, kind of what would be considered fetal position for a bird with the neck craned inward. That’s usually signs of illness. Vet gave me Tylosin soluble powder (if you divide it into four, you can make it in quarts and use 76.5 ml per gallon of water of your solution). I also use Toltrazuril (.18cc/pound). You more than likely will lose more. It’s honestly heartbreaking. Also, please get them off the ground until they’re older.

On top of the informative post I would just add if people want to learn about these animals. I suggest two things before breeding them, 1 buy a book, 2 consult with zoos who specialize in these animals. Then if you find out your area is suitable for breeding these and you have knowledge needed of how to, go ahead and do so. Otherwise keeping animals without knowledge I see this just as animal cruelty and in some states is even punishable by law, if you get caught you end up in jail. So learn and stay sharp.

I have raised peafowl, for more than 4 decades, you can't keep them with chickens, they are dying from the bacteria in chicken manure, which is not deadly to chickens but it is to peafowl. They should have been put in a brooder the day they hatched and raised on wire for the first 6 months.

I would have recommended that as soon as there was two deaths, especially since the second one did not look smooshed/flattened/ at all, just looked belly-up (which is often just what happens when birds die), but maybe they can't afford the post-mortem/testing? (( and/or consulting just with a vet experienced with exotic birds about potential issues a vet thinks it could be in general ))

I worked on a ranch where peacocks were invasive and NOTHING could ever stop them from overpopulating. We also had the rare white variety. On the ranch, we had lots of trees and shade, and they roamed freely. Also, their own mothers raised them. Those are the differences I can name off the top of my head. Maybe your lack of success with this type of bird has to do with one of those factors.

Yea birds in general just tend to be...not very hearty. If they have the slightest problem, it is likely to spark ten more. I guess my main tips would be to make sure they are on food for peachicks and not just chicken pellets, chicken feed may not be giving them the correct nutrients. Possibly contact a vet and tell them your situation, and get some advice, I'm not a professional or anything but I do live on a small farm with goats, chickens, ducks, cats, and a dog. I have learned that you should love them while they are here, but don't be surprised if they don't make it, (mostly with birds) because they are either on cloud 9 or death's door. They are very fragile. Life is fragile. Make the most of it.

Do you have a soft pack area for your peafowl? We have a large shaded area with sand and diatomaceous earth (1/4 ratio) for all of our birds, but specifically for my more delicate chickens. It makes digging for the chicks a little bit easier so they can cool down faster if they need it. It also prevents pests and promotes good cleaning practices for the birds. If it's not the heat my next best guess is either a parasite transmissible from the hens (likely from there feces, but there run looks really clean so I doubt that) or another pest. I feel you though, I had one of my promising show roosters die suddenly last week with really no indication of what happened. It's frustrating when there's no clues to put together as to what happened. Good luck with the peafowl!

I think it could just be from having a new queen and using other brood frames. When they brought the hive in I remember they did give the swarm a brood frame from another hive to bolster numbers. It might not be her fault if she's just replacing what hatched. Nothing wrong with replacing her if it is an issue though. I don't know if that frame is from another hive, but I think it is. Over wintering is going to be an issue from what I can tell. The flow hives and langs up north normally do all right with a heavy worker count but the Lego hive is plastic so I'm not sure about it. I'd suggest getting some bee safe insulating material to pack around the hives. It's a good while away but I think if the numbers are too low it's going to be an issue. I used to live around that area, it gets so cold I'm not shocked about the previous hive issues. With the amount of hives lost over winter I think the cheap option is to do a foam wrap before first frost.

I’ve always been told and also raised peachicks where u have to keep them in a wire bottom cage for the first yr of life to where their poop can fall thru bc peachick will eat their poop and it can cause them to die. Idk if that helps. But also with them being white they r just hard to raise for watever reason with genetics. Like with my coturnix quail the white ones also seemed to be weaker and died on me for no reason 🤷🏼‍♀️ Good luck! Hopefully y’all will be able to have a pair atleast.

I'd also add some tiny light just to help them see at night. In fact in broiler chicken the factory have the light turn on 24/7 for the newly hatched chicks and only turn it down when they grew up. Chicks have poor eyesight at low light.

When our chicks showed these symptoms, it was Mareks. With our turkeys it was salmonella. I dont know if peacocks can contract these diseases. Hope you find the cause, it is heartbreaking to find dead birds daily.

Oh that’s some nostalgia right there! My dad’s a vegetable farmer, small scale ecological, and whenever I came across cucumbers too big to give customers I took them to the chickens. I broke them in half and held them while the chickens picked out the seeds. Good days. I’m living far from home and I’m not able to keep chickens right now, but I still grow the same cucumbers. None are big enough to eat yet but I’m in the garden every day enjoying watching them grow ❤️

Please feed them chopped garlic with leaves, chopped onions, proteins. Feed them a little yogurt daily until it's very hot outside. One spoon apple cider vinegar in 1 L of water twice a week. These things will help them to be strong. Place a big box having ash+dry soil+ sand + dried calcium mixture to bath. It's very hot for them to survive under that tractor.

Chicken and peafowl should be kept separate. Read up on blackhead. Don’t know if that is what you are dealing with or not. Chickens are not as affected by it, but it is deadly for turkeys, peafowl and quail. Especially young birds.

With my own extensive experience with raising all kinds of birds, with the exception of Peacocks, I have learned the minute signs birds show when they are sick...and recognizing that short window of time that you can start medicating them before it is too late. In any case, I worry about the third peacock, as it's wings were drooping. Maybe it's a male and that happens with that particular gender in that species? But watching the fourth in its last stages of life, it's wings were also drooping. Maybe they have a vitamin deficiency, like vitamin B or a parasite like Coccidia? Do you have an avian vet around you that could help in this case?

Peachicks are very sensitive to cocci and parasites and usually can’t survive them. Most people I know that raise them keep them off the ground for the first four months. Or in a strictly disinfected pen. So sorry you guys are having trouble with them, I know you’ve gone through a lot to get them and it’s extremely frustrating:( I just love your channel, as I’m quite the bird nerd myself❤️

I think this comment gives the best tip. Many commenters suspect that the heat is the problem, but I don't think it is. I have had peacocks for years in the Netherlands where I live, they stayed in a large, clean, covered pen. It never gets that hot here in the Netherlands, but my chicks didn't survive all of it either, peacock chicks are just very sensitive. It's hard to get them big.. I think Rachel's tip might help Good luck, I hope they survive 🙏🏻

This happened to a couple of my chicks. I would feed them medicated feed for the first week, then mix medicated chick food in with the regular feed and they’d be good after. They will release drool or a mucus from both mouth and nose, which I spotted in two of the chick peas. It will spread through the water. I wish you the best of luck!

Hi, it's likely Coccidiosis 😥. the peacocks are more susceptible at that age. It's very important to access them every day to make sure they aren't lethargic and are eating and drinking. Keep in mind they are good at hiding illness, so look closely at them daily. Amproliem will clear it up fast. Probably same issue for the Turkies. Good luck!

Its three weeks after this video was posted ....My first thought is heat and, maybe some of the black mesh, 60%70% UV ray blocking sun shading tarp would help; it often reduces the temperature too. My second thought would be to be suspicious of the hay. And my third thought would be nutrition and/ electrolytes in the water. If disease or parasites are the issue, moving that tractor is the quickest, easiest thing to do; maybe removing the chickens as well. As I watch the video more, the pea chick's seem to need more immediate mode attention. I would have put an emphasis in changing out thier water more often for colder water. And while you have more of a farm than petting zoo, I think I would have tried adding some ice to that water too.

I would get your birds checked out by an avian vet just to make sure it is not some virus or infection. Though it does seem to be the heat (like you mentioned), it might give you the piece of mind to be sure it is not a systemic problem.

Young peacocks are susceptible to an infection called coccidiosis, which can cause rapid death by the time symptoms show up. Listlessness, ruffled feathers and bloody diarrhea are often the first symptoms you may notice. I also found this by the looks of you're video this maybe the culprit idk if you seen any diarrhea or not that's the only thing I see missing
