I used to be a massive BTCC fan - go to races with my dad all the time when I was younger, but I've not really followed it the last few years. I'm still a huge motorsport fan and watch F1, MotoGP, IndyCar, Le Mans etc. But the BTCC just doesn't do it for me any more. I think the problem is it that it's become a bit stale. Whereas in other motorsport, there's regularly different regulations, new cars, new races and so on, BTCC just feels the same year after year. Same calendar, same cars, same three race format. There's not really enough that's new enough to make me excited - it just feels like you've seen it all before. It needs changing.

For me the super touring was the peak of the BTCC. Before that the days of the RS500's, M3's were a joy to watch. Andy Rouse, Cleland, Sytner, Soper, etc were great characters. I think the last great character was Plato. Now it all feels a little bit more sterile, and I'm not really invested in any of the drivers tbh.

I went to my first BTCC race at Snetterton last week, I had a great time, I don't really enjoy racing on TV but in person it was a great day for the price. I haven't watched in years so had no idea what to expect, but the races were interesting the track commentary helped me follow along and everyone there was really nice so i had a great day. Looking forward to going again

Problems with the BTCC started a long time ago, Super tourers were amazing things realy looked like the cars your brought in the show room, Lagunas, Mondeos,Primaras, Accords......... all saloons, we then stopped buying saloons, for the series to be relivent now stick them all in modified Quasqui's Pumas, Q5s and all that shite Make it an SUV race no one buys hatches, saloons and coupes any more.

The reason BTCC is failing is simple. Lack of variety. Bring back the days of RWD V6 & V8s vs Compact FWD nippers. Hell even in its "height" we at least had variety of engines regardless of the 2000cc limit. Volvo I5's, Ford/Mazda V6's etc etc. It is now all the same looks, same sounds, etc etc.

when BTCC came to the fore in the super touring days Murrey Walker said to the BBC that showing races live would be a major mistake, they did not listen to him, now the whole meeting is shown live so no need to go to the circuits to see the support races and without the highlights the average man on the streets won't watch hours of unedited coverage

I'd hope it's not dead, I just got back into BTCC in 2021/22 - I went off it years ago when most brands pulled out and it was nothing but Astra Coupes. Hopefully Autosport International can get more BTCC brands and drivers onboard in 2025 as it's one of the few premier motorsports that fans can get really close to. It wouldn't hurt for a few manufacturers to release some BTCC inspired road going versions of the touring cars with wider wheel arches. I think a couple international rounds wouldn't hurt either, the same way British GT goes to Spa-Franchorchamps. My biggest fear is that soon every manufacturer will abandon hatchbacks in favour of SUVs...I don't think the Ford Puma would be a great touring car to be honest.

Great video! 3:15 The correct question is "How much do they pay?" Not how much they get paid. Most drivers pay the team to race. Some have other businesses that they use to pay for it just because they love the racing. A few have sponsors, then the trick is to make a profit from sponsors over what it costs to race. Typical damage repair bill alone is £30k/year. Rumour has it that top teams charge drivers up to £500k/season. Few, if any, are ever paid by a team.

Interesting video! I am a big F1 fan, and I've tried multiple times to get into BTCC but I've always forgotten about it in the end, despite being to Croft 3 times to watch it. The biggest problem for me is the races are spread over the course of the entire day. Although it's good for people at the track, having to tune in on TV 3 different times throughout a Sunday just doesn't work. I, and I'm guessing most people don't have time for that. If it was one big 50 lap race, I'd watch it every time. The other smaller issue is as the teams aren't linked to manufacturers, trying to get someone excited about supporting Laser Tools Racing is difficult (for me at least). Whereas if was Ford, Vauxhall, Seat, Suzuki (similar to F1), I think it would be alot easier for newcomers to pick a team to support and get passionate about it etc. Lastly I don't think the whole presentation package is great. On the current standings on the official website, it doesn't even have the driver's teams next to their name. That doesn't sound like much, but it's just another barrier that doesn't have to be there to get into the sport. Unless you have knowledge of all the teams and drivers, you'd have to go backwards and forwards from the team page to actually tell which team's drivers are doing well - there's tons of little things like this. The highlight show on KZbin is fine, but say it's 10 minutes long - often it will be 4 minutes before you actually see any racing. Maybe I am being nitpicky 😂

I rather watch BTCC over paint dry boring F1 any day of the week honestly. The close racing is all I want to see, no matter what speed or what the cars look like. Cars can be fast and look different in F1, but the racing is boring as hell. Not sure why anyone would watch F1 over BTCC. F1 is the worst motorsports series on the planet.

Hello swede here! One of the big reason we watched it was because it was cars that you could recognise from the streets! People was proud of their 240 and 850 because they where fast on the tv! I believed they should dile back the aero the 90s spec so people can see the car easier and we can get some propper btcc specials on the showroom. Stcc have gone fully electric, not a bad thing. But they gone spaceframe and crazy aero. A big mistakes in my opinion

For me, the lack of interest is because they are NOT based upon road cars. It would be much more interesting to see how each manufacturer battles it out with their different models, designs etc. Rather than identical spaced framed vehicles that just look different. This might also help with the whole 'win on Sunday, sell on Monday' mindset.
@TassieLorenzo
@TassieLorenzo 5 ай бұрын
To be fair, they are not spaceframe. It's the real chassis between the A-pillar and C-pillar, just with the control BTCC subframes front and rear. Steel panels are used like the real doors and real glass too. Sure, it would be fun if there was a rule that you need to use road car suspension pickup points and type, but then it would just be TCR... So, I dunno if that's helpful. TCR is basically exactly what you describe "based upon road cars" -- most of them with the production engines (even mechanically bog standard production engines in the Honda and Audi), reinforced production subframes, using fabricated suspension based on the standard pickup points, geometry and type. Except rear wheel drive is not allowed, but you ARE allowed a flat-four Subaru with a longitudinal gearbox if you want -- there was one before based on the old WRX. Whether TCR is really anything significant different than NGTC as a spectacle? I don't think so. TCR is (as far as I know) a LOT cheaper than NGTC to buy (build?) or run however. If BTCC went TCR, West Surrey Racing wouldn't be forced out, they could always be the homologation team for the (now) front wheel drive BMW 128ti. There's no current generation Ford Focus TCR either, so Motorbase could be the homologation team for the Ford Focus.

It wasn't till 2007 that I found my interest returning and in 2008 went to all the rounds live.. I have made lifelong friends during that time and are friends with People I wouldn't be friends with had I not gone to BTCC.. That said I must admit my interest has wained abit the past few years and haven't been to a live event for awhile now. This isn't the first time I've taken a sabbatical from the series and I'm sure my interest will return.

I watched it years ago, stopped and the past 2 years i've started watching again as its the only racing i can watch for free now. I really enjoy it. One issue is overtaking, as in F1, there are some tracks where its so hard to pass. They need to do away with the changes per race. Some times they will have to use 2 types of tyres, others just 1. Consistancy in this issue would be important to me.

Personally used to go to btcc at brands most years, but we have now switched to gt world challenge , in part the sound is a big part of that with regarding going to the track. With regards to why its not as popular on tv , it used to be bigger than it probably should have been because of the fact it was on bbc 2 grandstand with much less choice back then and also the manufacturers backing and you would support the team that was the manufacturer of the car you drove.

Get it back to as it was in the 80s 90s . The cars use to resemble the road cars. however as time went on the cars are more like one offs. The cars need more power than grip, also with a proper H section gearbox. Etc
@TassieLorenzo
@TassieLorenzo 5 ай бұрын
"More power than grip" I think Ford regret only putting a 8" wide rear rim on the Sierra Cosworth though. It may have made Sierras exciting to drive, but perhaps not the best race cars (vulnerable to E30 M3s with much lower tyre wear over a race)? The modern "equivalent" Mustang Ecoboost has 9" wide rear rims with a 255mm section tyre (9.5" with a 275mm on the Mustang GT)! Would you really be only allowed a much narrower rim and tyre than what's on the road car, in efforts to recreate the 1980's?

@UKMechanic Formula Ford is a serious series and still uses the 4-speed Hewland H-pattern! 😄 H-pattern or sequential (and then pneumatic actuators on top of that if desired) is only a difference in the selector mechanism of the racing gearbox, after all. There was a H-pattern version of the X-Trac gearbox before BTCC teams switched to the sequential version of the X-Trac gearbox -- it's not like BTCC runs shift paddles on it, so it's not a big deal if they change to the H-pattern version IMO.
@TassieLorenzo
@TassieLorenzo 5 ай бұрын
@UKMechanic True! The only "advantage" of the H-pattern (be it old F1 cars or the X-Trac on early Super Tourers or the Holinger without the sequential adaptor on V8 Supercars in Australia) is nostalgia and that it's more fun for fans to watch. Oh well. Those fun 6-2 double declutching downshifts with the almighty big blip are a thing of the past in top line racing sadly. 🙁

They were profile cars . ie had to have the same dimensions give or take a few mill of road going cars but under neath the cars was anything but. in around 97/98 I had the pleasure of working on computer systems for RML (Ray Matlock Ltd) who at the time were running the Nissan Touring car team and in one corner of the premises along side the race cars was a chassis from a road going Nissan Primera. I foolishly asked if it was a spare chassis only to be informed no it was just so they could compare measurements to ensure race care was correct dimensions and in fact the only components on race car that were from a production Primera were the door handles and door mirrors and he think they may have replaced the door handles with lighter versions !!!!. just personally speaking I think it's probably more popular right now than its been in the last 20 years. every year I go to the track the crowds are noticeably bigger, seems like every 3 or so years they sign a new long deal with ITV, more and more people I know who aren't even racing fans have been talking about watching it. it will never be as big as it was in the 90s just because they were throwing F1 money at it (which was unsustainable). it's a shame because what everyone wants is big teams and big international names coming over and racing, but it's just not like that anymore. the collapse of tcr and dtm is disappointing, especially because touring cars as a concept seems to be fading away for more gt style racing. I do think the BTCC is very much alive and well, but the next couple years are very important to get right. the impression is that teams are leaving and the cars are too expensive.. the truth is a lot of the teams that have left were either already struggling or relied on manufacture backing (like dynamics with honda). it's just part of the cycle, but they have to make sure it doesn't keep happening. (just my opinion) I've been enjoying it more over the last 5 years and I think the last 3 or so seasons have only gotten better.

I’ve just watched the BTCC Doc “On The Limit” and it’s peaked my interest once more so maybe it’s more social media presence it needs? I’ll be interested to see what can be done to put it back up there as it’s the most exciting sport to watch!

Would btcc be more popular if they ran TCR regulation like the rest of the world. So cars from all round the world can race. Like back in early super toureres and they then had a few "world " races and "euro" races where drivers can use the car they race. But the BTCC is the only championship that run the NGTC regulations. Also another point has the intrsr in "cars " ingeneral died off slightly. Less modified cars on the road etc so less people intrested.

In the quest for parity, The cars are basically the same as each other now, same front and rear subframes, suspension, brakes, transmission, most cars seem to use the toca engine,so they all sound the same, no 5 pots and v6s any more! Also the hybrid is a waste of space. The same could be achieved with overboost rather than trying to be 'green' and lugging around batteries for an extra 40bbhp or whatever it is this year. It barely seems to make any difference to the racing Still enjoy the btcc, and like a lot of the drivers, it's jus the rule set. Understand why all the spec parts, the 90s heyday was criminally expensive,

Haven't been to a race for years, so I thought I'd take the Mrs and our 7 year old to the BTCC at Brands a couple of weekends ago. Had I quick look on-line, and quickly made other plans. The GATE PRICES now... crazy... extra if you want a Grandstand... plus the food, plus the merch that the little boy will obviously want. TV only for us, I'm afraid.

Get some characters back into the cars, not the boring PR speaking robots. BTCC was popular because of the racing , the rivalries, the contact racing (without penalties!) and the fact that the cars were modified road cars, not identical spaceframed, fibreglass bodied clones. Haven't watched it for a few years now, 90s were the heyday and I fear that it will never return.

@@moleyballin2270 You are both right! I think both points are true. The Super Tourers were more like crazily modified road cars (standard suspension pickup points, the original type of engine even if was way further back and lower than standard, and often with reversed cylinder head), compared to the NGTC cars with standardised subframes front and rear and most of them with the category engine (or a manufactuter engine that near as makes no difference sounds and performs the same as the category engine). The NGTC approach is certainly much better to allow a privateer to build a competitive car without spending a million pounds per car! But you have the comparison to TCR which is more production-based and cheaper to buy and run than NGTC.

Its stagnated. The lack of fresh driving talent, the rather botched introduction of hybrid and last year the racing just wasn't as good as it was and the grid shrinking by 1/3 in 3 years. The other problem for me is that its called the BRITISH touring car championship. there is no race in Wales, no race in Norther Ireland. Its basically the English Touring Car championship with one round in Scotland. There are 9 events and two of them are at repeat venues which is a bit mickey mouse. I think too many rounds are a write off. They use the longer Snetterton layout and it ruins the racing, the old short one was good fun, the new layout is just pants for racing. Having 3 races ruined by selecting a poor track layout is not clever, its like they are not watching!!! To be fair I always thought Thruxton is frustrating to watch as basically you just park the car on the right hand side into the last chicane and nobody passes. Me and my friends just feel a bit bored by it because its just got a bit samey.

Unfortunately..car design is just boring these days..tedious hatchbacks...that are so similar. ..in looks ..and sound..go back to the very early days of the 2ltr class which became super touring. ...different cars..sounds, 3 box saloons with just about 300bhp..no aero. .some with sequential boxes. .some with H pattern. .but all were different. ..we were witness to some of the most aggressive racing seen on tv...it was fantastic!.. plus we had the voice of motorsport. .Murray walker. ..the BTCC...will die off because the cars racing now will be discontinued. .the focus is off in a year or so... Hyundai has stopped production of the i30N performance. .what cars will they be using in, say, 3 seasons time?... touring car racings future..is actually in the past...people will go to more period races to get their fix....like the Silverstone classic, and Goodwood members....thats where the real racing is....

Not watched it for years. I’m sure there is still lots of action, but the cars and teams I can’t relate to. Lost interest early to mid 2000’s. Racing drivers these days are all well trained robots that give the same interview responses again and again. Not interested in teams like ‘power maxed’ bring back manufacturers like Ford, Vauxhall, Renault, Peugeot. I think things have changed so much from the good ol days of the 90s that there is no coming back and it is doomed.

I'm really fallen out of love with it recently. I first got into it early/mid 90s going to Oulton Park with my dad. I DETEST itv and everything they stand for. I've found their coverage to be amateurish with few redeeming points. They'd get more viewers if they went to KZbin like the fanatec gt series. The cars - boring, sound the same (at least on tv) Drivers - I'm probably out of touch with them atm, but when I last watched it properly there was noone recognisable, all sanatised and samey compared to Plato, Menu etc. We now watch F1 (since 1990) fanatec gt europe series, wec, elms, imsa (mx5 support racing is amazing) and Australian supercars. Maybe I just got old

The few folk I know who watched BTTC also got bored of it, thew few that are Marshals who lived and breathed it in the past are fed up. Can get a better spectacle out of many other series. And as long as it is live only on ITV I wont be watching it anyway 🤷‍♂

Yeah, they do sound bad (as do TCR). Low revving turbo four cylinders sound bad. Could there be a way to return the BTCC to naturally aspirated engines or turbo engines with more cylinders? Or WRC cars have turbo four cylinders but they rev higher and sound great, so is there some way to apply that to BTCC?

It has been dead for a few years now. Needs a hard reset. Three short races, gimmick of reverse grid cheapening victory, cars all look similar, oversponsored, lack of personality, no rivalry, its a very tired series. Needs a hard reset to more basic road equivalent cars like they did in the late 80s which brought on the golden era. Don't feel they are even trying. ITV coverage doesn't help. No need to show all the support races. Packaged high quality highlights with better camera work would improve. Also commentary team is a shadow of previous.

I know we can't have everything but there doesn't seem to be any personality like there used to be in the Clelland, Soper, Warwick, Mansel, Neal days. I know we change as we get older but one thing is certain is change..........and the days of noisy engined motorsport are coming to an end unless someone can invent a green fuel to prolong our motorsport entertainment.
