Great video. I always enjoy your information about eBay selling and buying. It’s def the other guy’s fault for lowballing you but also not paying attention to the messages you sent. You gave him a fair chance. I’m also glad it was this book you were talking about because I was going through a box in my basement and found this book in good shape. For sone reason I bought it when it came out lol. Now I have a reasonable idea of the value at the moment. Keep up the great work I always look forward to your video. Thanks for sharing. Have a great week. Be well. -Dave 🤙

Thanks! Yeah, I felt bad for him, but you're right that I shouldn't feel too bad, because he did shoot himself in the foot. And, that's awesome that you have your own copy! One day I would like to get one for my own PC if I can find a higher grade copy than the one I sold at a good price.

As a reseller myself, there is also option B to help that guy out. You could have politely messaged the buyer of the comic and told him the story and if he'd be ok with cancelling to help out this guy with the stolen comic. If he agreed to let it go, you could have cancelled the sale and sold it directly the other guy. If he wanted to keep it, that's also fair because he bought it, but at least you can say you tried.

I think that would be a reasonable option to consider. Personally, I don't think I would do that, because I wouldn't want the person who bought the comic fair and square to feel pressured to cancel the sale or to feel guilty if they held onto the comic (which I think they could easily feel even if I were polite, because I think that's how I would feel). But, I wouldn't blame another reseller for doing that. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I'm a full time Seller and hate dealing with low ballers on any platform. I tend to find most of them cause issues. Which ultimately I end up regretting just going with my instinct in regards to the situation. Like you touched on, he should have given you a more serious offer from the get go. I get "stories" like his every few months so I don't pay attention to the sob story. If it's true, yes it's sad but at least he was made whole by the insurance company. Most people aren't that lucky. I have missed out on an Avengers 1 and Tomb of Dracula 10 both were on Offer up from different Sellers. One ultimate regret would be that I had the ability to trade for an AF 15 back before the comic boom.

It's very helpful to hear your perspective from someone who sells full time and a good reminder to watch out for emotional manipulation. There are certainly times where my "Spidey Sense" has gone off about a potential buyer, and I ignored it to my detriment. And, man, that is a brutal break about the AF 15! Thanks for sharing!

KZbin might've deleted my comment, lol, so I'm posting this again: "Me too, and that makes sense. Of course, none of us have the time to prepare for every single book that we come across, so perhaps a better suggestion would be to do something like prepare for the top 5 books that we are hunting, so that we will be pretty to pull the trigger if we find it at a good price."

I have certainly missed out on some deals on books, just being a few minutes late, but have also had a few wins too. The awareness of comic values over the last few years seems to be on the rise, so you need to snatch a deal when you can.

The lesson learned here is never ask your spouse permission. Had the buyer done what I do and never talk about your comic book purchases with your loved ones, he would have been able to negotiate and buy the book in time.

If he would have read the first message sent to him, he could have had the book. He wasted his time sending multiple offers below what the seller had already received. HOWEVER, the seller certainly could have helped by sending a counter office right from the start.

@thetoyboxthetoybox8305 I get what you're saying, but I personally never send a counteroffer without negotiating through messages, because if the buyer decides to just ignore the offer, then I'm frozen out making offers to people on my watch list until the offer expires, which can lose me sales. If you're interested in more detail, I've got a video on my counteroffer strategies in my my selling on ebay playlist. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Great story but feel bad for the guy! When I was selling during the boom, I recall a few times reviewing offers and book was gone at full price, seconds later. I actually found a great looking copy of Web 32 at an amazing price and no haggling. I bought it ASAP after I got the notification. I tend to have a price point and condition always in my mind, and thankfully stick to it for the most part. Have a great rest of the weekend! 👍🏼👍🏼👊👊🎃🎃

Ebay games, fun stuff. I made a best offer recently, and the seller countered with the listed price, WTF? You are a great seller to take the effort and time to satisfy the buyer. Regarding Ebay auctions, if there's something on my watch list and I'm Johnny on the spot when the auction ends, the item always goes for full value or more! However, when I don't remember an item on my watchlist until after the auction has ended, without fail, it always seems that the item went well below market price. So, frustrating! Anyway, thanks for sharing and Good Collecting👍👍💗💗

Had an ASM 300 chromium edition. I put it up for 500 and someone said they'd pay 200. Told him if the book doesn't sell at the end date I'd give it to him. Within the hour of that message someone else bought it full price.

Interesting video. I'm glad I don't buy or sell on ebay, or many other platforms for that matter, other than with people I know. It seems to illuminate the shady stuff that is possible, such as shill bidding. Moral: give the seller a sob story.

Glad you found the video interesting! Yeah, ebay definitely has its pros and cons. As a seller, it helps me get my books in front of many potential buyers. But, on the flip side, there is certainly risk in dealing with people that I don't know. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I guess I have a different take on all this, and would be interested in your thoughts. The person who made the first $115 offer, which was fair and reasonable in my mind, missed out because they were too quick on the draw in this scenario. Seems counterintuitive. If it was me as the seller, I would have countered right away at $125 and bet that would have been a done deal. It's nice that you're a seller who's not annoyed with a lowball offer at less than 50% of your asking price (before knowing anything of their "situation"), and not just assuming they're just trying to get a cheap deal. Anyway, thanks for your thoughtfulness and wanting to help out fellow collectors "in need". I like to think I operate the same way. Again though, with this particular transaction, I personally would have countered the first reasonable offer and called it a day. I find myself feeling bad for the person who made the first offer. Also, on a bit of a side note: what if you had listed the book at $150 without best offer option? Potential buyers could still message you and ask if you would accept best offer. Has this happened for you as a seller where you have listed anything at a firm price and then had a buyer reach out to see if you would be willing to go any lower? Maybe a lot of potential buyers don't think they can do this, but it's definitely a good tip if you're courteous in your approach to the seller. Doesn't hurt to ask, right??

Great thoughts and questions! A few responses: 1. When I receive an offer from someone, 95% of the time I'll send them a private message thanking them for the offer, acknowledging that I'm willing to negotiate and then asking if they would meet in the middle. I do this for a couple of reasons: A. It helps to establish the personal connection that I described in this video as being helpful to closing deals. B. If they are unwilling to increase their offer, then I can still accept their original offer. However, if I send an "official counteroffer" through ebay, rather than negotiating through the message function, I cannot go back and accept the original offer if they decline (if you scroll through the videos on this channel, I made one a while back about counteroffer strategies if you'd like to see exactly what I do in further detail). 2. I probably would have eventually done what I'm describing for the person who made the first offer, but I was slower to respond to them in this scenario, because it was challenging to determine the fmv on this particular book since most that are sold are in high grade since it's a modern book. 3. I personally always leave best offer on, because I always list my books at a price that leaves room for negotiation (and like you said potential buyers may not realize I'm open to negotiation if I don't leave that option more clearly open). On the flip side, I absolutely agree that it doesn't hurt to message a seller in a respectful way, even if they don't have best offer on, to see if they will negotiate. I've gotten several deals this way. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching and leaving a thoughtful comment!

I'm not a fan of what you did all around. Glad you sold your book for full ask. $115 wasn't good enough, but $120 was after continous lowball offers. Yet the first person who gave you that original offer had no opportunity to buy. You could've refunded the buyer at full ask letting them know you accepted an offer for the $120. Correct? The entire transaction was a mess.

There's no way that I'm going to cancel a sale on someone who bought a book fairly. Everyone involved had an opportunity to buy when the book was still on the market, and it's not the buyer's fault that the others squandered their opportunity.
