I just got back from a very short road trip in the UK with my 17 year old son, and we listened to this album several times. It’s just brilliant (personal favourite is “Here’s to the Losers). Superb vocal harmonies, plenty of double kick drum abuse, absolutely blinding guitar playing, insanely eclectic choices and most importantly some brilliant songs. It was the soundtrack to a father and son bonding moment, which I’ll always be grateful for!

I fully acknowledge I am an Extreme fan. I didn't get this song when it appeared on KZbin, but in the album it suddenly made sense. Honestly.... This is one of the best rock power ballads you'll hear. I genuinely found it quite moving. Not ashamed to admit it. Everyone rightly say Bettencourt now has the EVH crown, but credit has to go to Cherone. I'd say he's next in line to the likes of Sammy Hagar. He somehow managed to get more gravelly but kept his range too. God, to be that talented!

@JustinHawkinsRidesAgain, will you do a review of the whole Six album in a single video? Personally, I absolutely love every track after just a couple of listens. However, I’d be interested to hear your initial reactions to songs such as “Small Town Beautiful” and “Beautiful Girls”, which at first seem incongruous next to the likes of “Rise”, “#Rebel” and “Banshee”. However, Extreme have always included diverse material on their albums (like Queen) so I shouldn’t have been surprised. It’s amazing that a single band can write songs in a variety of genres and make every one a winner. This is the first album I’ve looked forward to in years and yet it has exceeded my expectations. It is also the first album that has inspired me to crank up the volume in my car to obnoxious levels for as long as I can remember! Top Tip: It’s the only way to listen to the chorus on “Other Side Of The Rainbow”! 😉

Mr Hawkins: 1/ internal rhyme is more correctly defined as the presence of rhyming words within a line/phrase of a poem or song, where one or more of those rhyming words occur at the line's beginning or middle (pretty much anywhere other than the end). There are lots of examples in Shakespeare and Edgar Allan Poe; you also famously hear internal rhyme in the opening of Hey Jude: "don't make it bad/ take a sad song," etc. Internal rhyme examples abound in poetry regardless of rhyme scheme and metre. 2/ What YOU seem to be a stickler for is perfect rhyme, instances of end rhyme where the stressed vowels and consonants in the rhyming words exactly match, barring the initial consonants, such as lazy/hazy. But you should know that "near rhyme" or "slant rhyme" (it's called loads of other names) -- where words either lack assonance (the same vowels) or consonance (the same consonants), say, come/doom or baby/crazy or queen/regime -- is an accepted literary device. Emily Dickinson used slant rhyme a bunch, on purpose. So, while the lyrics of the song in question may not be the best ever (on account of the use of too many worn-out phrases and clichés), baby/crazy passes the test. The assonance overrides the difference in middle consonants. Seeing as I'm a stodgy lit prof who loves rock'n'roll and your channel, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to weigh in, and ponderously. Hey, it's what we do best. :D Cheers.

And I’m guessing he knows most of this already. He’s mentioned his love of poetry many times throughout these videos and on a couple of The Darkness records. I think he just has a “hang-up” about “baby & crazy” (maybe because of its overuse?) and not about slant rhymes.

@KickflipGnasty
@KickflipGnasty Жыл бұрын
@@mercedese5507None of that is “gaslighting”. Gaslighting is where an ‘abuser’ tries to make someone feel self-doubt or confusion(generally to take the attention off themselves). The hype around “Rise” came from people’s reactions to the KZbin video. You’re making it deeper than it is. Everyone seems to be throwing around the term “gaslighting” like it’s gonna go out of style. The term I think you’re looking for is “brainwashing”, but even that is a stretch. Like I said, it’s not that deep. Ironically enough, Nuno himself recently said he doesn’t think “Rise” is the best on the album and loves when people have different perceptions of which performances are better(he said in his latest interview with Rick Beato).

Just as Justin is letting the 'baby/crazy' thing go, I too am letting the over used quote go. They used it well & even though it has been over used to the extreme...(no pun intended originally but now that I see what I did, I'm owning it 😉)...the quote is over used for a good reason: it's a moving & thought provoking quote. Extreme pulls it off, I think. My English Major heart feels compelled to share. One of my fav poets, Sir Alfred Lloyd Tennyson wrote this in 1850! In "Memoriam", a tribute to his deceased friend, he wrote: “I hold it true, whate’er befall; I feel it when I sorrow most; ‘Tis better to have loved and lost, Than never to have loved at all.” Side note: "Most" & "lost" don't rhyme either but "befall" & "all" do. Poets do this all the time. They'll even pronounce the words incorrectly when reciting the poem to 'make' them rhyme. If great poets do this then I think we can forgive Extreme the baby/crazy "rhyme". The RULE should be: that if you are great then you can pull it off. If you are not then you cannot.

Come on Extreme can do no wrong! What an epic song! My brush with Extreme happened many many years ago. I was in a band in southern New Hampshire but we rented a practice space in Charlestown Massachusetts a suburb of Boston. When we were moving our gear into our new "room" we were bitching and moaning because it appeared as though we were in a storage locker. We were, in fact, in a storage unit but when we looked at the giant boxes and all of the locked gear we noticed the name Extreme stenciled on the side of all the crates!! We were super psyched to be rehearsing in Extreme's storage room ... sadly their gear didn't stay in storage for long so we didn't get as much mojo from being next to their gear as we had hoped! But it was still super cool!! 😁🤘

I got to know Pat a bit after buying his house 11 years ago in my home state of MA . I couldn’t agree more with the previous commenter who said he’s under appreciated, which happens when you play opposite a guy like Nuno. It would happen to the best bass player to ever walk the earth next to Nuno… He’s Hell of a bass player and all around good dude so I’m thrilled to see Extreme get the well deserved attention from this latest record because it’s really telling how big the appetite is for actual instruments this and a real band with a raw sound. it’s something I hope the music industry will notice because the buzz is awesome to see. Nuno belongs in The discussion for the rock guitar’s Mt Rushmore and anyone who can sound like that after plugging straight in to a Marshall DSL (the fisher price, my first Marshall of Marshall’s) is a master of his craft and the only guy I know who is almost entirely the sound of his own fingering and playing style unmasked by recording wizardry and effects. Not that there is anything Wrong good recording or effects, but it takes a special player to sound that good that raw and it never hurts your band to be a world class talent either because it brings other kinds of fans over. Pat gets the job of playing opposite stage from Nuno for over 30 years and there isn’t a bass player on the planet who wouldn’t be over shadowed a little there. Pat is the guy you’d want to spend time around and is really a gem of a human being on top of his playing talent. Cheers to Pat and all of Extreme for the Album, it couldn’t have come at more desperate time in music. This is going to be an unpopular opinion, so I’ll preface it with the fact that I really like this song. It’s my favourite track from the album so far. Nuno’s guitar solo is awesome and Gary’s vocal delivery is spot on, even being reminiscent of Freddy Mercury in parts. Love the video too… However… isn’t this the perfect example of what Jenny May Finn was talking about in one of the Jaws Of Victory episodes about lazy lyricism? I’m sorry, but there’s no story here, no emotional connection. Lyrically it’s just a generic “maybe, baby, crazy” summertime bop. Transfer those lyrics to a Taylor Swift or Harry Styles instrumentation and we’d all be dismissing it as ‘sugary sweet manufactured pop crap’. It doesn’t matter how skilled the musicians are or how flawless the music if the lyrics are half-hearted and superficial. I know lyrics don’t always have to be serious, mind-blowing or even make sense but I expect better from the band who wrote ‘More Than Words’. I just feel that the lyrics let them down a little on this one. Sorry.

Greta Van Fleet take note? This has some of the most generic, snd overused lyrics out there. Regardless of your personal taste, listening to Greta Van Fleet’s most recent release, is far beyond this song, or the first one they released. It’s nostalgia hype 5000, and Nuno’s solo, was the only interesting thing about the first song. At least Great Van Fleet are trying a new thing, and it’s far more original then this fluffy sounding song. I had Extreme’s first two albums, just because of the songs I heard, after they had the two acoustic hits. I was a fan in 1991-92, when they were one of the last bands tied to 80’s metal(though unfairly, and stupidly), that was having some success. But, Extreme III just wasn’t very good. I followed Nuno’s career, listening to him try to share his spark, with other bands. So, I’m not just trolling or hating. I’d love for this to be as incredible as Extreme fans are saying it is, but even your comment, about Tennison, and GVF taking notes, makes little sense. You _are_ saying that Great Van Fleet should steal from better sources, I guess? Or what? 🤣 I’m really not sure. Everyone used to say they were a Zeppelin ripoff, so that’s why I mention stealing. I don’t think they actually used Zeppelin lyrics, but I’m never surprised anymore by anything I find out. Cheers

I would say the use of "crazy" may have been on purpose as it nearly rhymes and so sounds ok to the ear, however the change in rhyming lyric with "crazy" reflects the chordal change with the lyric, making it stand out even more as if to emphasise it. Either that or I'm thinking like a Literature teacher lol. Great stuff with the videos, a new hobby of mine I must admit! Please keep it up!!

I dig this song a lot. Extreme always had this idealistic, romantic, soft and elegant side in their music and lyrics that not everybody seems to understand or like. But please, listen to the lovely harmonies. Just beautiful. I'm so happy they still let this part of their identity shine, which sets them wide apart from the pack.

I must admit, when I was an edgy teenager that hated the world and listened to nothing but Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax and Suicidal Tendencies I used to hate on Extreme and other bands that I thought were "pop rock" but as I get older I am really starting to appreciate bands like Extreme. I never really understood the fascination with Nuno at the time because I feel he was overshadowed by other guitarists like Slash (or the amazing talents of the early 80's rock stars like Randy Rhodes). I really appreciate this channel as it opens up my mind to music theory in ways that I would not have been open to 30 years ago. @JustinHawkins, I would love to see your thoughts on Bruce Dickinson's performance on the current Iron Maiden "The Future Past" tour.

I am hooked on this channel... LOL. As per this episode, The "shred" era of music, especially in LA at the time, single handedly brought down the LA music industry with pyro technique guitar indulgence. Sure he can shred to the extreme, but the solo does not fit the style. Hence, the exodus to Seattle and grunge in the late 90s and the end of LA shred hair metal. I am still waiting for the next big thing to reveal itself in music. Perhaps technology will have to merge with something else to create this. cheers.
