Hi Glen & Marie. Enjoyed the vid. I can tell you that the hammer you found is an upholsters hammer. The ‘split’ end will be magnetic so the person using it could pick up a tack with the magnetic end, tap the tack into the material and then spin the hammer round to drive the tack home.

Can a metal hammer head only be magnetic at one end? I remember reading that when magnetic hammers were introduced (during the 1930's) in the upholstery department of Armstrong Siddeley Motors in Coventry the workers were concerned that they might lead to expectations of a greater work rate. A supply of tacks was usually carried in the upholsterer's mouth so that they could be pushed forwards for use one at a time. Inevitably sometimes tacks were inadvertently swallowed in which case the treatment was to swallow some rice cake. It was soon noticed that workers were falsely saying that they had swallowed tacks just to get a rice cake and so the 'treatment' changed to being given some cotton wool to swallow. One wonders how effective either rice cakes or cotton wool could have been, but then I have not heard of workers suffering ill effects from accidentally swallowing tacks. It would be interesting to learn more.

I live here in the midlands and i appreciate the historical gems of info that you give us and all. No matter what you pull out, its, "Better Out Than In" eh? Exchange rate £1= 100.71 Indian Rupee No matter what you pull out, if its magnetic, it shouldn't be in whichever water course you fish.

I really like the reviews of the items found at the end. That Danforth anchor should be worth a few bob to a boater. They are also useful to off road and beach drivers here as you hook them to your winch and help you pull your stuck vehicle out.

The "iron age shoe horn" may be a break for a iron rimmed wooden wheel. Wooden wheel rim brakes are a very old type of braking system that used a simple lever to press a block of wood against the wheels. This method was effective on steel-rimmed wheels, which were used in horse-drawn and steam-powered vehicles1. However, when rubber tires were introduced by the late 1890s, wooden block brakes became obsolete because they would wear down the rubber quickly. The first modern braking system that replaced wooden block brakes was the mechanical drum brake, invented by Louis Renault in 19021. So your last was half right
