I think I hear Olive's chirp nearby. Looks like the one from yesterday, maybe a sibling. They all look cute! As I watch further, the interactions are so interesting. The intruder wants to play Mommy, and one of the chick was poking her to get off.

I was shocked when she actually sat on them, stomping around and generally being a pest. I'm surprised that Olive didn't come run her off!

For what it's worth a hummingbird weighs about half a gram. If you've ever held one in your hand it feels almost exactly like holding a cotton ball. All floof, no mass.

Could this be one of Olive's children from the earlier nest? Or I guess it could be another lady bird, trying to take over this nest for her own eggs! 🙀

Interesting. Olive does not come and chase this bird away. Today or yesterday. Is it one of her chicks from last year maybe? Chicks defending themselves. This bird wants the nest? Hmmmm.
@Tasarran Жыл бұрын
I think it is one of the other chicks; it looks like it wants to sit in the nest, but is never mean to the babies like it could be if it just wanted the nest for itself I think if it was another adult having baby issues, it would have tried to at least feed them

@LambieSamba Жыл бұрын
He is doing a LOT of scratching, If you have it John, this would be a good time ti sprinkle some DE on the nest and chick to prevent those mite that hurt the other babies!
@nancychace8619 Жыл бұрын
Interesting. What is DE? Good idea to protect birds from mites if possible, but do your research as any kind of med can be harmful if not done with full knowledge. For example- cats (dogs, too?) have been having serious problems with some flea meds. They're not all created equal. Would be good to review bird diseases and what is being done about them. How to mitigate them. Also West Nile - that' a stinker.
@KohalaLover Жыл бұрын
@Nancy Chace. Diatomaceous earth is an insect killer but it doesn’t work right away. It kills mites, yes, but it also kills beneficial insects such as butterflies, bees and ladybugs.

Intruder took swift advantage of baby looking away to land in the nest. It looked to me like they wanted to fit in the cup. Maybe memories of mom looking after them and feeling safe. There didn’t seem too much aggression really, and once they found a comfy spot they just relaxed. If you are going to get a nest intruder, then this is one of the gentlest I have seen. But there is no room for you anymore so go humm elsewhere. Mom’s about to bring some food and you don’t want her to see you.

Male hummingbirds do not have a part in raising the young. They only mate. Only the mother female nests with her eggs and chicks.

The other hummingbird must be Uh. June? She looks like she didn’t intend to harm the babies though. She must be an unintended visitor.

could this intruder recently lost her brood and looking for a "substitute?"
@soulaesthete8563 Жыл бұрын
Okay, this was just weird. At first, the intruder seemed only curious with the chicks, then became a bully by jumping onto their backs, and then appeared to be resting on them in a protective manner. I loved how near the end, one of the chicks got fed up and started pecking at the intruder's breast. I know one thing, their mother should check on them more often!

I am just seeing this now (A Month Later, while now is JUNE Wednesday 14, 2023). Surprises me no one thinks of the (Father). I think this is the Father (The Dad), (Unless he is was known to be some where else he is at, at this same time or looks different as being know of that?) and wants time to enjoy his baby kids. (I don't think this Hummer was an Intruder). This Hummer was/is the Dad. (I Think).
