DC9 Banding Day! 💕 😊 DC National Arboretum EagleCam 5.2.22

Today the eaglet DC9 from the National Arboretum DC nest was banded. This was part of a planned study to evaluate the effects of pollutants in the Anacosta River. National Geographic is doing a special on DC9, the pollutants of the Anacosta River and how this may effect the eagles. They banded DC9 and took blood samples. It is suspected that DC9 is a male - we are waiting for the blood sample to confirm the gender. Mr P returned back to the nest to check on DC9. Thank you for watching!

I followed this nest for a couple of years. I’ve seen it with a foot of snow on it and watched the progression of spring. There was a lot of drama and then I lost track of it. I can’t imagine being able to climb up there so this is a real treat! It’s always been an amazing vantage point. I’ll be excited to see him fledge.

The wing slaps from the little guy sounded pretty solid ,"touch me and see what you get" . Even at that young age it ried to defend itself . Reminded me of Foghorn Leghorn , I'm a chicken hawk you a chicken ? And seeing mom or dad's shadow several times was cool , they were close by and keeping an eye on things .

I am amazed by this! This young man is well-suited for this job. I am very impressed with his demeanor and patience. He seems to enjoy his job. I have watched this a few times, and it doesn't cease to amaze me. I think DC9 did a great job too, showing how big he is by spreading his wings. That makes me smile every time. No need as the population is doing so well. Banding only needs to happen when a study group is studying them and environmental changes. Best to leave them alone if at all possible so a smaller group is used to study. Bless the scientists who continue to monitor the populations and study how we can help them populate more again.

This is called Nest Perspective--and we see it on Nests of Cam Mon sites. Cam pickup makes birds and growing Chicks look smaller than they are-- because we have no reliable measure of Size to judge by(here we have the banders hands and body as a ref point) When we see the Female Eagle in this nest beside Eaglet--She is standing about 3 ' tall--Head to feet.--or fills up an av size guy's Chest from Chin to Belt. Eagles are " Massive " Birds

ow wow! This was so amazing. I never seen an eagle get banded. I just assumed it was done in the nest. The baby seemed interested and I kept wondering what was going through his thoughts. And can I say what an amazing job the man did. It takes great skills to climb and not jeopardize the tree and nest. Who could have a bad day at work climbing trees, petting baby eagles and hanging out in the nest?? LOL Great video!!

Patricia-- Sometimes they do. Dr Sharp of the iWS out here in Cal. , had one eagle attack his head---now He and all banders wear helmets--Some carry umbrelllas---Mostly I believe it's a size Problem. the eagle would rather not engage a Creature so large-- in Talon/wing body contact--Would rather fly around and make eagle Cries.

@@yoda40 Eagles are Fierce Warrior Birds and can defeat any opponent in the Air--Part of that is size but partly because of their Superior Aviation skills--They can turn ' Talons Up " in the air and face a smaller , more manoveurable opponent and either chase it away or defeat it. The Eagle's biggest opponent is other eagles--who are on the loose looking for new territory to make their own. Eagles, esp. Bald and Golden Eagles --are truly "Masters of the skies "

Fight or flight … it’s rare for them to attack something much larger than them. Instincts tell them to abandon a fight they can’t win. They can always make more babies.

Excellent footage! The young bander was so skilled and patient with DC9. It was delightful to watch. It will be enlightening to find out the results of the blood test pertaining to effects of pollutants in this young eagle. The Anacosta River was previously one of the most polluted in the US ☹but lots of money, effort & litigation has gone to improvements. Last I heard it was still off limits to swimming and fish consumption. Will be looking for that documentary. TY LH for sharing this special video. 🤍
