Watermelon are my favorite food so I have to say I've perfected my picking technique. The best watermelons check all the following: Dark yellow field spot (if there isn't a field spot at all that's okay- they were either trellised or rotated). Webbing from pollination on the surface. Dull not shiny surface. Round vs oblong. Solid thunk when tapped with your knuckles (should sound like a watermelon-bongo lol).

P.S when you get a watermelon in the winter, it is from last season so they will always be old and less firm than a melon bought in the summer.
