Or so that's what people think in the story. You have your faithful, faithless and people that want to believe but question Gods motive and power. Yes Mayans had no leap year but the Mayans did not use a Gregorian calendar system, they used an astronomical calendar, u know, the stars. the December 2012 thing is in reference to when the planets will all be aligned, not the actual date, so yes, it is still possible. You take that passage out of context. He is speaking about those who seek the praise of men and not those who seek to praise God. The pharisees would very often pray in public or hand out money only when there were multitudes of people around to show off to. Speaking your beliefs has nothing to do with the passage. In fact the bible urges Christians to "make disciples of all nations" Matt 28:19, and can only be done when you talk to others about the one true God.
