WEEKEND WOGAN 10th ANNIVERSARY SERIES - Show 19/35
12.45pm, live on BBC Radio 2 on Sunday, 25 July 2010... ‘Oh So Tight’... one of my own songs from my album, ‘A Seat At My Table’… (available from my www.eliopace.com)
This song is my seductive ode to ‘inspiration’ itself. A song about flirtatiously summoning the muse in the hope of getting creative and writing a song. It’s my love song to music, to rock and roll, to invention.
I wrote ‘Oh So Tight’ in 1988 and performed it the following year with a full orchestra on BBC1’s ‘Michael Barrymore’s Saturday Night Out’ live at The Dominion Theatre in London. It was at the rehearsals for my debut self-penned album, 21 years later (after one run-through with my band), that my bass player, Neil Fairclough, suggested that as a change to the rest of the album, I should drop the band for this track and record it with just me and my piano citing that his "Dad would love to hear that, as would everyone else". It took Neil’s brilliant vision of stripping the song back to its bare bones to create the change which perfectly encapsulated the ‘conversation’ the lyric portrays between myself and my muse.
In 2012, the song was picked up by Swedish band ‘Shake’ who recorded it for their album ‘Quartet’ which entered the Swedish album charts at No.10. I didn’t even know they had recorded it until the band’s brilliant piano-player, Johan Sjodin, messaged me with a link to their version. A very flattering experience. Shake's version of 'Oh So Tight' went on to reach Gold record sales as part of a 2CD Rock And Roll/Rockabilly compilation album called 'Cruising Klassiker' released by EMI Sweden and which also featured tracks by Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry and Fats Domino. And for all of that, I am very grateful to Johan and all the wonderful guys in the band.
When I now play this song live with my own band, I perform half of it solo and bring the band in halfway through. For this ‘Weekend Wogan’ version, I decided to recreate my voice/piano album version. ❤️
