What got me about this scene were most of these were actual quotes.

Does anyone else think that Jack Hawkins (portraying Franz Joseph above) looks nearly identical to Frank Pentangeli in The Godfather Part II ? Striking.

The real Franz Joseph did not play any musical instruments. He was profoundly uninterested in music throughout his life. Which is strange, given that most Habsburgs before him have been accomplished musicians. Empress Maria Theresia was a fine singer, Joseph II played the cello, Leopold I composed church music, archduke Maximilian was Beethoven's favourite pupil...

On 27 July 1914, When the Austrian foreign minister Berchtold requested Emperor Franz Joseph to sign the declaration of war, Did Emperor Franz Joseph actually sign the draft of the declaration of War on the same day of July 27, 1914?
@thomast85393 жыл бұрын
Franz Joseph signed the declaration of war at 11 am on July 28th, 1914. Berchtold sent a telegram to Belgrade 10 minutes later, informing the Serbians that both nations were now at war.

The Germans didn’t start WW1, but they should have not given Austria a blank cheque, and shouldn’t have invaded Belgium, but hey were not the first ones to start the war!

Franz Joseph looks like an exhausted, sad old man here. He must have had a hard time dealing with the emotions and thoughts of knowing, absolutely and finally, that he would be the last emperor of his country.

What nonsense - The Kaiser lived until 1942. Poincare until 1934. Sir Edward Grey until 1935. Moltke died before the war ended , but of natural causes. Only 2 people beside the Archduke & his wife were killed, the Czar and the Czarina and they were executed by the Communists, not assassinated..

Interesting fact: Austria-Hungary established the first concentration camps in Europe. It was network of around 10 camps. Those camps were mainly for Serbs and small number of Italians. Nobody ever was prosecuted for the genocide. One of those camps was Mauthausen which will be used again in WW2 as a concentration camp for Jews and others. Did someone mention the glorious Europe of the time?
@jt76383 жыл бұрын
Was there actual genocide there? There are detainment or prisoner of war camps, but extermination camps are something altogether.
@naky63 жыл бұрын
There were prisoners of war for sure in some of these camps (who were also systematically killed), but in some of them, children, women, and the elderly too. When you move thousands of people (and again children, women, elderly) from eastern Bosnia to concentration camp in Doboj and you kill 46000 of them, that is genocide. Those were extermination camps. I understand you might be surprised, but at the same time, I'm not shocked you don't know about it.
