The movie is War and Peace, produced from 1966 to 67 in the Soviet Union, based on the book by Leo Tolstoy. The director was Sergei Bondarchuk, who also starred as one of the main characters, Pierre Bezukhov. Bondarchuk was one of the great actors in Soviet cinematography. The movie, like the book, is a masterpiece. And like the book, the three-part series is LONG! Having read the book twice and watched this series four or five times at least - I cannot recommend it enough!!

The movie Waterloo was also produced in the former Soviet Union. In my view Waterloo is one of the top ten war movies ever produced.

@@danielkinder8260 I hate to admit it but I watched Waterloo with Rod Steiger and Christopher Plummer for the first time last summer. I don't know how I made it to my 50s without seeing or hearing about that "masterpiece"! I was talking with a friend earlier this year about War and Peace directed by Bondarchuk and he mentioned Waterloo. Yep, a stunning movie!

@@TogoshiTanuki Thank you. I thought using Christopher Plummer as The Duke of Wellington and Rod Steiger as Napoleon were inspired. Both actors resembled both leaders it seemed uncanny. They even appeared to capture what we today would believe to be their personalities. Of course the fact both great actors in their own right helped.

@@danielkinder8260 And Sergei Bondarchuk also directed Waterloo! I just looked it up on Wikipedia. He was an excellent actor and a brilliant director. No wonder I love both movies!

@@TogoshiTanuki He indeed was a great actor and director. Another good period movie is "Damn The Defiant" starring Alec Guinness. I consider this one a great naval battle movie of the Napoleonic era.

I remember seeing this back in the day. I think it ran for 7 or 8 hours. We had to watch it in two sessions as I recall.

The artillery of the Frech was the best in Europa at that time not making your formations an easy target was the rule of the day anyhow.

Armies of this period never advanced in line , only in column , and deployed into line for the final advance . Napoleon used the tactic of pressing home attacks in column , without deploying especially against inexperienced conscript eastern European troops
@ПётрИванович-з4ыАй бұрын
At that time, all armies were formed by recruitment, there was no conscription yet either in Russia or in France! The Russian infantry in the 18th and 19th century was one of the best in the world! The only one in Europe that could fight on equal terms with Napoleon's infantry!
@ThedumbmarshalАй бұрын
@@ПётрИванович-з4ы not to sound like a nerd (I kind of am sadly) but the French revolution introduced conscription which is why the French army in the revolution had million men serve (though only had at peak around 200-400k serving at a time) against the smaller and more elite men of the other European nations. Napoleon used this to great effect to mobilize the grand armee, especially in 1812 where is was at it's peak, and Russia, like France, still had elite imperial guards and veterans of earlier wars against the French plus the Swedish and ottomans, but most of Russia men were conscripts. to give you an idea, the French fielded 600,000 men in the Russian campaign and had a total of 1.1 millions soldiers from all of Europe, while the Russians also fielded 600,000 men to defend Russian territory and a reserve of 1 million militia making 1.6 millions, although of course the militia weren't use. hopes this sheds some light on the Napoleonic wars more, you can always search stuff up yourself.

I dont think the russian ever had a one coloured uniform. Even now its not 1 of a kind
@rodionspierenburg958928 күн бұрын
That is till this day in in qny army more or less the case..only in parades. Cloathing is intensive used and for month years. And fabrics are not synthetisch. And the bright red uniforms from the UK where notso Bright as in the movies. Exept the officers. But the red from private s turned more to a flat redish brick red. Not to speak of white uniforms... And look to ww1 or ww2 and Vietnam same story..
@atuanredjo668525 күн бұрын
@rodionspierenburg9589 my point exactly. Not just 1 of a kind. It never was. Even if color faded in other armies. It never was 1 kind clothing nor color in the russian army even modern times. No standard uniforms.
