It takes a truly talented writer to make LITERAL BEDSHEET GHOSTS utterly terrifying.

I dunno tho, l watched the old tv version from early 70s and the voice the ghost used saying "nooooo its meeeee" sounded so much like kennneth williams doing a deeper voiced snide l fell about laughing, l got my son into mr james and he said he had gotten the 70s version of it for tv, l never said anything he called me up later " was that meant to be funny, l said what ? The ghost clothes with the fruity voice, l said l dont really know 😂

A classic chiller that still gets to me; James was one of a kind.

Some of James's power is the Victorian fear of the ancient fathers

Been wanting to get into M.R. James, and as much as I love reading, I find I prefer listening to short horror; this was a great presentation. And I certainly didn't expect the "Sir Not-Appearing-In-This-Film" joke in the prologue!

The BBC made an excellent film of this starring the late great Michael Hordern, and directed by Jonathan Miller of Beyond The Fringe fame. You can check it out right here on KZbin

I haven't listened yet (I know it'll be good anyway) but I recognised this story because they referenced this in Alien Covenant. Not a great movie but such a good villain.

Have heard different versions of this story? Would like to know which version is the actual MR James one?In one version HES taken to an asylum first thing in the morning a gibbering wreck, never to be heard of again??? Bit of a nerve changing such a famous writers work!!!

Love this....lots going on here, but james would have thought it not cricket to talk about that in anything but Latin. Poor old Templars, killed for being bad catholics, condemned by the major for being Catholics. Umberto Eco has written lots about this lol.

I really enjoy M R James's stories but I believe that the narration would be even better if Benedict Cumberbatch did the reading. 🙂 🤔
@robertliberty35714 жыл бұрын
No disrespect to the current narrator, but I rather nod to Michael Horden and his readings of the '70s.
