Peter Yearsley narrates this classic tale of terror by English author M.R. James, originally written in 1904, about one Professor Parkins of St. James College, who, following the end of a school term, embarks on a golfing trip to Burnstow, England. A friend asks Parkins if, while he's there, he could examine a former Templar site, to determine if it would be a good site for archaeological work in the future. Parkins promises to do so. While on the trip, Parkins investigates the site as planned, and while on the beach discovers an old whistle in a crevice in the masonry, blows it - and puts it in his pocket. On the way back to his hotel, he notices someone running after him. The figure never catches up to him, and once back at his hotel, he notices Latin words on the side of the whistle, which translates to "Who is this who is coming?" He did not understand the inscription on the other side. In consideration of what happens later that night in his hotel room, it becomes obvious he should have taken the time to translate. It appears something may have followed him home.

Author Montague Rhodes James (1862-1936) was a medieval scholar; Provost of King's College, Cambridge. He wrote many of his ghost stories to be read aloud in the long tradition of spooky Christmas Eve tales. His stories often use rural settings, with a quiet, scholarly protagonist getting caught up in the activities of supernatural forces. The details of are almost never explicit, the stories relying on a gentle, bucolic background to emphasize the awfulness of the otherworldly intrusions.
Narrator Peter Yearsley has d0ne many readings of public domain works for the Librivox project (www.librivox.org). To hear more of Peter Yearsley's narrations, visit his Librivox profile here:

Hurrah for some classic British horror, and what a story to pick! In my opinion, this largely forgotten tale from the early 1900s is one of the best British ghost stories ever written (largely because it was genuinely terrifying the first time I heard it!) and it perhaps demonstrates the origins of the present day Creepypasta movement.

Good to see a tale by M.R. James on this channel. Count Magnus and A Warning to the Curious would also be good choices for narration.

This is probably the best scary story channel. 1. Variety or narrators 2. Stories are long enough to listen to on the 40 minute drive to work or fall asleep too. 3. Good collection of Stories 4. ...?

What really gets to me about this particular story is the feeling of isolation of walking along an empty stretch of beach and then being followed by that apparition. The irregularity of its movements, yet it nevertheless seems to find its way by some means is nevertheless quite unnerving. I would be scared to death myself, because no matter if I could outrun the thing, it would never cease to come after you. I would love to hear more from M.R James on this channel, Count Magnus, to name one would be very welcome. Keep up the good work!

M.R. James is the finest ghost story writer ever. Poe and Lovecraft are the finest horror story writers, but when it comes to pure ghost story--there is none better than M.R. James. Excellently narrated here! ~Dharke

Never before have I listened to anything so unapologetically old-timey British. A very enjoyable story, the narration was a bit dry, but I kind of liked that about it. Not every narrator has to ham it up.

It's pretty obvious that he's a Librivox reader. The are notorious for providing some of the worst, driest, least expressive readings in the universe. It's a great story that you just can't expect today's kids to appreciate or understand, but it deserves a great narrator.

The narrator's voice and accent fit the tone of the story perfectly, but I must admit I found the experience in its entirety slightly dry which I suspect was due nearly exclusively to the narrator as the story itself was quite interesting.

Interesting commentary on the narration. It's 'dreadful' or the 'scariest rendition ever'. I can't agree with either extreme. I am always glad to hear James' stories, but unfortunately for me, I'm really not a fan of Yearsley's monotone style (or his microphone here -- if you're going to be that raw and close use a pop/windscreen) but it's not 'dreadful', just pedestrian. Give me Hordern on this one especially, any day. But I am glad he did it. Hell, I am very glad anyone is still tributing M.R. James and recording his classic tales. There are only so many Michael Horderns and David Collingses and Derek Jacobys to go around. People shouldn't give up trying just because they can't all be the best ever. It's not dreadful. But it's too monotone and kinda bland to be any scarier than average to me... yet I suppose 'scariest' is just in the eye of the beholder. Or the ear of the behearer. :)

I guess you have to be on that wave length, it was quite difficult for me to understand at first, but I eventually grasped the content of the story. It's so hard for those who can't understand what the heck it's about. Luckily, I'm British and I grew up listening to stories of this nature, so with minor dedication, I soon realised what it was about.

With all do respects I thought the English narration was rather appropriate for the story especially since it is very British in it's context. If you used another accent it wouldn't have made much sense especially where the text is concerned.
@MothMommy

schizoidboy I understand what you mean by the necessity to include the English accent, what I was more referring to, though, was the dreariness of the reader's voice. I attempted to listen to it but only made it a part way through because the lack of any type of life in his voice just bored me to tears.

I got to admit that I nodded off during the narration but you should remember the writer M.R. James was also a scholar who specialized in Medieval books, he had a tendency to over-write, so for our time it does tend to be tedious. Nonetheless it can be creepy.

Nello Lawliet There is an infinitely better reading of this story by Derek Jacobi. He does the voices very well indeed and brings the whole thing to life. Unfortunately, I don't think it's available, free, on You Tube.

XViRuSX2012 I didn't mean it as a generalization of this channel or anything. I just didn't feel the effort was put forth in this particular narration. This is the only only one I have watched that just bored me to death. Also why wouldn't they want negative feedback as well as positive? Channels can only grow in viewers by accommodating to their viewers and becoming better channels. So your trolling is not wanted anywhere, especially not by this channel. :]
