Peter Yearsley narrates this classic tale of terror by English author M.R. James, originally written in 1904, about one Professor Parkins of St. James College, who, following the end of a school term, embarks on a golfing trip to Burnstow, England. A friend asks Parkins if, while he's there, he could examine a former Templar site, to determine if it would be a good site for archaeological work in the future. Parkins promises to do so. While on the trip, Parkins investigates the site as planned, and while on the beach discovers an old whistle in a crevice in the masonry, blows it - and puts it in his pocket. On the way back to his hotel, he notices someone running after him. The figure never catches up to him, and once back at his hotel, he notices Latin words on the side of the whistle, which translates to "Who is this who is coming?" He did not understand the inscription on the other side. In consideration of what happens later that night in his hotel room, it becomes obvious he should have taken the time to translate. It appears something may have followed him home.

Author Montague Rhodes James (1862-1936) was a medieval scholar; Provost of King's College, Cambridge. He wrote many of his ghost stories to be read aloud in the long tradition of spooky Christmas Eve tales. His stories often use rural settings, with a quiet, scholarly protagonist getting caught up in the activities of supernatural forces. The details of are almost never explicit, the stories relying on a gentle, bucolic background to emphasize the awfulness of the otherworldly intrusions.
