Yes, you have just listened to a masterpiece. The five original members of the band are some of the most versatile musicians you will ever hear. Between them they could play 35 different instruments. This is why they require a full orchestra as their backup.

Great choice for a reaction video! The Moody Blues were a 5 man group (Justin Hayward - Guitar, John Lodge - Bass, Mike Pinder - Keyboards, Ray Thomas - Flute, and Graeme Edge - Drums) that wrote and played their own songs. They blended awesome melodies, introspective lyrics, and unique instrumentation to make incredible concept albums in the 60's, 70's and 80's. They had many hits over the three decades including Nights in White Satin, Question, Story in Your Eyes, I'm Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band, The Voice and Your Wildest Dreams. There has never been a voice like Justin Hayward before or since!! The Moody Blues are one of my favorite bands of all time.....I have their complete musical history. Got the chance to go to Reno Nevada in 2009 to see them live......it was an experience I will never forget!! Justin sounded just as good then as he did in his highlight years. You MUST hear this with the Late Lament which follows.... Breathe deep the gathering gloom Watch lights fade from every room Bedsitter people look back and lament Another day's useless energy is spent Impassioned lovers wrestle as one Lonely man cries for love and has none New mother picks up and suckles her son Senior citizens wish they were young Cold-hearted orb that rules the night Removes the colors from our sight Red is grey and yellow-white But we decide which is right And which is an illusion The Moody Blues were poetic/musical geniuses! Right up there with The Bee Gees!! Band members, Jan Lodge on bass, Ray Thomas on flute, Graeme Edge on drums and of course Justin Hayward lead vocals and guitar. The flautist was indeed part of the band.....they used flute in many of their songs. They were really revolutionaries with the use of full orchestra behind their rock and roll....they introduced that concept to the rest of the music industry. I was really surprised you had not heard of them or their music as they are British! Again, I LOVE them, you really need to check out the rest of their songs.....there's not a bad one anywhere! Oh and fun fact, each of their main albums produced all had a spoken poem in them! The Late Lament was not their only recorded spoken poem, only their most famous as it was attached to Nights in White Satin.

The album this is from, "Days of Future Passed", which is one of the first "concept albums" by a rock group. It starts with dawn, the morning, and lunch eventually leading to the the other hit from the album "Forever Afternoon (Tuesday Afternoon)" and eventually to "Nights in White Satin". The use of the full "London Festival Orchestra" was also groundbreaking.

In that recording the guys were in their 60s. The Moody Blues introduced it in 1967. Theres an early version by the Moody Blues that incuded a poem written by one of the band members and recited by the actor Richard Harris (the first Dumbledore) as part of the song. Google "moody blues, nights in white satin, late lament". Check it out. It will add icing to this really great song. Trust me on this one.

2 things: 1. This is one of those rare reactions where we can actually see your minds open. What a joy! And 2... I've seen a few other young reactors listen to this, and I noticed how they seem kind of shocked at his all out declaration of those big "I'll love yous". There sort of a reflex to cringe, and then somehow it's ok and you just revel in how beautiful it is. You guys looked that way too. It's quite an open and vulnerable thing to do - yell that out. On The Moody Blue's album "Days of Future Passed" this song actually ends in a soliloquy that is usually left out of Live Performances and the Radio Edit of this song. Even though it is just in the form of the spoken word, I think that it adds so much to the overall feeling of the song, and people who only listen to the shorter versions miss out on so much. The ending goes like this: Breathe deep the gathering gloom, Watch lights fade from every room, Bedsitter people look back and lament, Another day's useless energy spent. Impassioned lovers wrestle as one, Lonely man cries for love and has none, New mother picks up and settles her son, Senior citizens wish they were young. Cold-hearted orb that rules the night, Removes the colors from our sight, Red is grey, and yellow, white, But we decide which is right. And which is an illusion.

You each need headphones to really appreciate the music. The flute player, Ray Thomas (RIP), was one of the original founders of the band and was a multi instrumentalist, composer and vocalist. Justin Hayward (guitarist, multi instrumentalist, vocalist, composer) joined in about 1966, as did John Lodge (world top rated bass player, multi instrumentalist, vocalist, composer). John and Justin are the two surviving members and still tour separately. The band was formed in the early 1960's and were active until 2018. Justin wrote this song at age 19.
@elizabethrogers83065 сағат бұрын
T0 add to this... The drummer, Graeme Edge (RIP. percussionist, poet), was the first to work towards developing electric drums. Former members include Mike Pindar, an original founder, multi instrumentalist, composer, vocalist, who introduced the Mellotron into the sound, adding orchestral elements which became part of their sound. He also introduced the Mellotron to the Beatles. He left in the late 1970"s. RIP 2024. Denny Laine, (RIP) former lead vocalist, left the group in approximately 1966 and went on the co-found Wings with Paul McCartney. He was the lead vocalist on their first hit "Go Now".

In 1967 this song really stood out from the pop music and shouting rock of the time. The whole album was a huge success and they followed it with hit albums every year or two for a very long time, the after a short time off, came back with more hits in the 80's. They still sounded great when I saw them around 2000. Unfortunately, we have lost a couple of them but Justin's voice is still brilliant. Ray Thomas was the flutist and did a lot of the writing and arranging. He was a founding member.

Justin's song writing took the band to another whole level, most people have forgotten the Denny Laine led Moody's

OK, I read all the comments so that I wouldn't repeat anything already posted. This sounded almost note for note the same as the original album did when it was first released. They were proud of being able to reproduce their sound in a live show exactly as they played it in recording studios. They formed in the early-to-mid 1960s, to the best of my recollection. Forgive me, I'm 67 myself, and I was in college in the '70s, so I don't trust my memory as much as I wish I was able to, LOL! --Dan

Definitely one where a bit of context helps. 1968 and the band already existed though not nearly as successful as they became after this. The album was Days Of Future Passed and was among the first crop of concept albums. In this case the concept was the day and this was the night portion (with Tuesday Afternoon being the other big hit from the album). Now that said, what’s truly unique is that this album was actually created as a showcase for quadrophonic sound which was a new thing at the time. The record label funded it as a showcase and while I forget all of the details, basically wanted a classical showcase for orchestra. Somewhere along the lines it became a Moody Blues album with orchestra thrown in (no doubt influenced by the Beatles in that regard). The album is one continuous piece without breaks between songs. On the album itself the transitions between songs was I believe the London Philharmonic Orchestra. In the actual songs themselves however the orchestra was not used. A relatively new instrument (keyboard) at the time was a Mellitron which basically used tape loops. The Beatles used one extensively and on this album, the orchestra parts in the songs themselves (think the portions with lyrics) was all Mellitron. It was a pretty groundbreaking album as I said kind of extending from the Beatles work and no doubt also influencing bands to come such as Electric Light Orchestra. Tuesday Afternoon should also be on your list, perhaps the studio version just for some contrast versus a live version from many hears later.

This was our wedding song back in 1975. We celebrate 50 years together next August! Congratulations on your recent wedding too!! 🥰 The Moody Blues have had some personnel changes over the years. Here, Justin Hayward (b.1946, age 78) is on guitar and vocals, John Lodge (b.1945, age 79) is on the other guitar and does vocals also, Ray Thomas (b.1941-d.2018) is on flute, and Graeme Edge (b.1941-d.2021) on drums. These are the regular band members seen here. They were a late 1960's progressive rock band, probably the first "grandfathers" of the progrock genre. The full orchestra was contracted for this special performance done post-2000 and is not a part of the actual rock band. The practice of marrying full symphony orchestras or smaller orchestra string sections with traditional rock and metal bands was first championed by guys like the Moody Blues, the Scorpions, and Yes. The practice has been carried to new, stratospherically beautiful heights by the mainly European genre known as Symphonic Metal with great, present-day metal bands such as Nightwish, Epica, Within Temptation, Leaves' Eyes, Sirenia, Visions of Atlantis, Whyzdom, Xandria, and many, many others. You guys have a lot of great rabbit holes to explore on your new channel here, and I'm along for the ride definitely!

Contemporary music of the time was pop, folk, R&B and rock like the Beatles, Rolling Stones and The Who, with "progressive rock" like Pink Floyd just starting out. But ... a full orchestra? A running theme (a song for each part of the day, hence "Nights in White Satin")? And of course Justin Haywards dreamy vocals ... uh-hem (that's why the women in the audience were shouting out his name before the song began ... lol).

All the recordings are with full orchestra. Others have mentioned Days of Future Passed which illustrates birth through death, the seasons of the year, the days of the week, and morning through night as the progression of time. Nights in White Satin was written right after Justin and his girlfriend had broken up. She gave him white satin sheets as a gift. She heard this song and got back together with him. They were married and stayed married; the love of his life.

Justin Hayward sometimes watches reactions to his/their songs. I left a comment on another reaction to this song, telling of my experience seeing them in concert in '87 and listing some recommendations. About 4 days later, I got a reply to my comment from Justin Hayward. He is in his late 70s now and a very nice gentleman. We exchanged one more round of comments after that. For songs to listen to, "Tuesday Afternoon", "The Story In Your Eyes", "Your Wildest Dreams", "Ride My Seesaw", "The Voice", "I Know You're Out There Somewhere", and "I'm Just A Singer In A Rock And Roll Band", just for starters. Enjoy the journey.

Since you are enjoying the groups and songs from the late 60's, early 70's give a listen to Procul Harem, the song Whiter Shade of Pale , live in Denmark 2006 This song was released back in 1967 or 1968

I saw the Moody Blues at the Wolf Trap in Virginia in 1985. It is an outdoor venue and it was an awesome concert.

I'm surprised I keep seeing first time reactions to this song where the sample listened to is this "current" live performance. These guys first released this song in England back in 1967. That is the version you should listen too. There's a lot to it that's missing here.
