Yeah, there were a LOT of "I'm alone now" songs on late-1970s easy-listening radio. My dad bought Barry Manilow's "Even Now" album, the one with "Copacabana" and "Can't Smile Without You" on it. EVERY song was a depresso-fest, no matter how positive or playful the music sounded. It's from 1978, but I think Dad didn't buy it until after the (ETERNAL) divorce started in 1981. Understandably. (The interesting part is that it was a whole bunch of songwriters on the album. Barry must have been VERY specific about what he was looking for.)

Jay...Rupert Holmes is a masterful songwriter. As many have suggested he got on the map with a song called "Timothy" that he wrote for a band called The Bouys. The song charted at number 17 on the top 100 Billboard. What was interesting about the song was it was not promoted by the record company at first but young listeners focused in on what was going on with "Timothy" and the song took off getting airplay. The record company promoted it at that point but then it got banned by some stations. However, younger listeners of the day loved the song and a station that banned it was replaced by others that jumped on the train to play it and the ban flopped. The song is well played, produced and well written. The lead singer sadly passed away recently. It is a great pop song by a clever RUPERT HOLMES.

Yes. Rupert did have a good set of pipes. It's easy to think of him as a one-hit wonder, but he's far from that. He came from a musical family, with his brother being a noted singer in the NY theatre community. Can't remember his name as I'm digging deep into my musical archive brain! Rupert was a session musician (those guys are always good) before finding his own top-of-the-charts success. Escape and Him are easily his biggest hits, but he had three or four other top 100 hits, although more backend of the charts, IIRC. He also wrote some hits for other musicians. He's written Broadway musicals, and is also an author. He's the only person to have had a #1 hit, won a Tony Award, and won an Edgar Award for best mystery novel. That last part I only recently found out. Holmes is his stage name, in honor of Sherlock Holmes.

This is a great song, and I ran across another song of his that I just love, TERMINAL. That one is unbelievably beautiful. Hope you'll react to that one at some point. That was an earlier song but boy it's special.

Even minor hits with ear worm choruses from the 70’s are perfection!!! Loved this reaction!
