I used to hate the comparison between the two, as a very long time Afam Ant fan. But there is no denying it, now. I saw a video of Johnny on stage recently and couldn't believe how much they looked and sounded alike. Then, I happened to come across Johnny Depp in a Stetson hat, among knit caps, etc., etc., etc. Same man, just different eras! (PS, Adam has a pic of Johnny hanging on his bulletin board in his office). ❤️

The whole video was a sort of send-up of the whole highwayman phenomenon of 1700’s Britain, the most notorious being Dick Turpin. Stand And Deliver was a common cry of highwaymen as the held up coaches for robbery at the time. Adam Ant was well known for his flamboyant dress sense and was an advocate for being original and expressive in appearance, and that you shouldn’t care what other people think. This is epitomised in his song Prince Charming with the lyrics “Prince Charming/Prince Charming/Ridicule is nothing to be scared of/Don't you ever, don't you ever/Stop being dandy, showing me you're handsome.” So I think that this song about the dandy highwayman is along the same vein, pouring scorn on those who conform and have no flair or originality. As for the “diddly qua qua”, I think this is just a load of nonsense words to provide a break from actual lyrics, similar to the use of musical filler like “shoobie-doobie-doo” or the more simplistic “la la la” used in a number of songs through the years. This is one of the earliest music videos I can remember and had a vibrant impact on my four-year-old self. And I have to say, even though I’m a happily married straight guy, is not Adam Ant beautiful in this video? I think so! 🐜🎶😀

This music was part of the 'New Romantic' era, a glam, dandified reaction to the previous scruffy, big booted Punk music era. Adam created a pantomime character and fantasy figure. A return to pure pop, this song is not really meant to be analysed, but he's saying dress up, be flamboyant, you don't need to act tough and violent. He mentions other music trying to be too deep when this should just be showbiz. He's basically teasing those with no style, and introducing his band and saying follow us. Adam's band were The Ants, 'join our insect nation' and be our fans.

“Goody Two Shoes” was a hit when he left the Ants and went out on his own as Adam Ant. (As opposed to Adam and the Ants). This song was off the Prince Charming album and is one of my personal favourites but he’s probably best known for the Kings of the Wild Frontier album. Every song is a banger but the most well known song would be “Antmusic”. I saw Adam Ant play about three years ago and he was still amazing even though he is now in his 60’s and looks remarkably like Jack Sparrow!

Great reaction. This is 39 years old from 1981, and I love the way he's only interested in stealing their limelight and not interested in their belongings. This song really complimented the whole New Romantic trend of the time. The New Romantics didn't follow trends, they made them and this for me was definitely a swipe at how boring society was and how boring the music scene was. Duran Duran, Soft Cell, Spandau Ballet, Visage and later Culture Club were all part of that scene. Fantastic year for music xx

Probably hasn't heard of the phrase "Stand and deliver" either, but it's also unlikely that young Brits have. Not sure why the popular interest in highwaymen has waned. There seemed to be lot of interest in the UK culture during the 1970s and early 1980s; maybe it was a different way of retelling the "robber as hero" story that was repopularised in the 1950s and 1960s with those garish Robin Hood TV and film productions.

@@hardtohandleweddingbandent8653Yes, "Stand and deliver" was an old way of saying "Hand over your valuables" by highwaymen. A few hundred years ago, my family was in the horse stealing business, but they quickly expanded into the highwayman business. They had an organization, which covered all the British colonies which were to become the United States. Sometime around the time of American independence or as late as The Enlightenment of the very early 1800's, we got religion, and the gang was dissolved.

I remember going to clubs in 1981, people dressed up as Adam/pirate/highwayman, sort of a New Romantic thing.

As the lead singer doesn't drink or smoke the press had a go at him so he hit back by writing a song called Prince Charming. Stand and deliver was the phrase, used by highwaymen when they stopped couches to rod the people inside. 🤔🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🤠

“Stand and deliver, your money or your life”, was the classic line a highwayman would say when holding up a coach. Dick Turpin was the most famous highwayman.

Adam and the Ants really took a piss on the MSM with their song Press Darlings in the 80s . These days practically nobody watches the MSM news agencies like CNN and MSNBC . Thanks for covering Adam back in the day of good music .

Theatrical band. Victorian era Highwaymen - coach robbers, basically - used the challenge "Stand and Deliver!" meaning, "give us your stuff". Highwaymen usually came to a bad end.

Really cool that you've reacted to Adam and The Ants KSO (though you are 'COOLNESS' personified :-) x - Started off as a punk band in 1977 and released some tracks, namely Deutscher Girls, Young Parisians, Zerox/Kick and a 1979 album called Dirk Wears White Sox and with many band line-up changes too., But they weren't really taken serious enough as a punk band. Punk then started fading as 1980 drew close and suddenly The New Romantic scene burst to life, with all the hairstyles, clothes, make-up (even for guys) etc. Also there was a crossover from Punk to New Wave/Post Punk, which is more what Adam and The Ants became (not New Romantic). By 1980, Adam and The Ants had a new and settled band line-up and with 2 drummers on board (called Burundi drumming), they released 3 singles 1980-81, Dog Eat Dog, Antmusic and Kings of the Wild Frontier, which was also the name of their first album. End of 1981, they released singles Prince Charming, Stand and Deliver and Ant Rap (all the band members 'inroduce' themselves with their names in this track lol) and an album called 'Prince Charming'.................and a HUGE following of fans joining their 'Insect Nation' lol. Then in 1982, Adam and The Ants were no more, as they disbanded with most of the other band members joining other bands and Adam going solo (though he did take songwriter/guitarist Marco Pirroni with him for a while). His first solo album was Friend or Foe and first solo single being Goody Two Shoes both 1982 (also other singles released from this album were 'Friend or Foe' and 'Desperate But Not Serious'). The album 'Strip' followed in 1983 (with only Strip (little known fact, that both Phil Collins played drums on this single and Anni-Fried out of Abba said the spoken words on the track) and Puss'n Boots released as singles). The album 'Vive Le Rock' followed in 1985 and only 2 singles from this being 'Vive Le Rock' and 'Apollo 9' (you can hear more of the gibberish lyrics in the chorus on this track lol). Then he seemed to drift in to the acting scene. His next album was 1990's Manners & Physique with 2 singles from that, 'Room At The Top' and 'Can't Set Rules About Love'. One thing though KSO, is that you really need to react to all of them (yes, even the punk tracks lol) if not just for curiosity value........though I'm sure you may love all or most of the tracks :-) xx

If you like this video, then try both Prince Charming and Ant Rap for a spectacle. For the music, try Kings of the Wild Frontier, Ant Music and their debut single (in this lineup) Dog Eat Dog. This was his short-lived Dandy Highwayman phase, these were mounted robbers in ye olde England - the most famous was Dick Turpin. Don't take the video too seriously though, it's pure pantomime...

Prior to recording his second album as Adam and the Ants, he asked producer Malcolm McLaren (manager of The Sex Pistols) to manage his band, who instead took his backing band to form Bow Wow Wow. Ant regrouped with new members, including Marco Pirroni to release his second album Kings of the Wild Frontier (1980). It reached number one in the UK Album Chart, spawned three hit singles and the album was the UK number one selling album in 1981 (and the 48th best seller in 1980) and won Best British Album at the 1982 Brit Awards. He released his third and final album with the group, Prince Charming (1981), which spawned two UK number one singles "Stand and Deliver" and "Prince Charming". Stuart Goddard was born in Marylebone, London. He was the only child of Leslie Alfred Goddard and Betty Kathleen Smith. His father had served in the Royal Air Force and worked as a chauffeur, and his mother was an embroiderer for Norman Hartnell.[3]:4 His home was two rooms in De Walden buildings, St John's Wood.[3]:5 He recalls: "There was no luxury, but there was always food on the table.” He is of partial Romani descent; his maternal grandfather, Walter Albany Smith, was Romanichal.[3]:10 This heritage became a basis for a theme in his later work: a concern for oppressed minorities. His parents divorced when Goddard was seven years old[3]:35 and his mother supported him by working as a domestic cleaner, briefly working for Paul McCartney.[ In 2003, the television special titled The Madness of Prince Charming[35] was aired in the UK documenting Ant's career and his struggle with mental illness (he was diagnosed as suffering from bipolar disorder).

Girls loved him (beautiful looking man) and the guys wanted to be him....as a 16 year old male at the time, I appreciated Adam saying "it is ok to dress and act upon your fantasies, be who you want to be, ignore the haters, be yourself". Definitely part of the sound track to my youth, loved his music and persona. There were quite a few bands like this on the scene at the time, but Adam Ant was one of the best in their chosen style of music. I still regularly visit this time in music and listen to Adam Ant, Dexy's Midnight Runners, Howard Jones, the Cure, the Cult and so on and so on, they all made songs for the ages. Talking about the Cult, check out Edie (Ciao Baby) by the Cult, its a song about Edie Sedgwick, an young actress and Model in the late 60's who came under the influence of famous artist and weirdo, Andy Warhol. It's a sad story about her demise, but the Cult gave her a great song about her and her sad loss. (the song --> kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6C1qJ-JftNsZ5o ) Thnx for the upload and react :D

His band were called The Ants, hence Adam & The Ants. Then Adam went solo and became Adam Ant. The Ants went on to form the group, BOW WOW WOW with lead singer Anabella. Listen to “I Want Candy” by BOW WOW WOW, and you can hear the similarities in the sounds of both bands. The drum beats are very tribal in sound.
