@Mike-ge7pe8 күн бұрын
Baseball went through this. Showboat or jog too slow after a home run and someone was getting thrown at. It doesn’t happen as much anymore since the penalty for doing so has gotten more severe. The NHL could institute a “retaliation” penalty in similar situations. What has happened in MLB is that the announcers have stopped taking a negative position on celebrations and instead paint them as light-hearted expressions as long as there isn’t outright taunting, like pointing, yelling, or direct mocking of the opponent, and the players, for their part, have accepted it. Rarely do you see a pitcher pay much attention to a batter who’s just hit a homer off of them. They turn their attention to the next batter and the game goes on

I can relate to the "I don't really have a day" concept. I too only played video games (mostly EA Sports NHL '96 that I still play today) and a lot of what you talked about was evident in that game. I also always thought the concept of retribution for "unwritten code" violations or hard plays on a star player was a bit useless since the damage was already done and the retribution rarely was directed at the other team's star player so it didn't really even things up. I could understand the teams wanting that retribution in the form of a fight in the only team sport that seems to allow it but, imho, it wasn't an effective deterrent. Just like now, the refereeing needed to be better and timely. Love your videos, thanks for the great discussions.

However, getting a taste of stats and data collection through working Q.A. in manufacturing, I know that definitions, parameters and data collection have to be spot on or the numbers mean nothing. I suspect a lot of Analytics we are presented with are dubious due to inconsistent data collection, bad definitions, etc.

I played (not professionally) a LONG time ago and I can understand some of the comments. My biggest beef concerns the use of the stick today. The slash on the wrist can be nasty, but we wore gloves that went up the forearm a bit instead of stopping so low. Of course a slash is going to hurt - there's no padding ... and players get more leverage on the shots. However, the accidental high sticking clip is getting ridiculous. "Back in the day" we got high sticking penalties when the stick was used as a weapon. Now a stick can deflect off many surfaces and hit an opponent, blood is drawn and there's a big penalty. OK, fine. Then it's time to make every player wear the full face shield, or at least a bar or two that prevents the stick from doing damage. They did it with helmets, then visors, which are really a half-hearted attempts to prevent injury. Let's do it properly. It's not going to hurt the game, but it will save incidental penalties and may stop significant injuries.

Baseball has its unwritten rules as well, and cockiness and dominence is frowned upon.

I guess it's a matter of how badly the other team is being whipped.

Vally didn't point it out to call Jack Hughes out for the type of player he is or the move itself. He is just looking for any reason to call the Rangers out on what they might get riled up about... but they don't, they're sad and gutless. That's why Steve said it and I agree with his statement regardless... Shits too sweet in this league now

So in baseball, you do hear a bit about running up the score. A Chicago White Sox player got in trouble with his team's manager (basically the coach) pretty publicly a few years back after hitting a home run off of a position player who came in to pitch (which only happens in blowouts). Of course, said manager is also no longer managing, but you see these "old school" unwritten rules dinosaurs in every sport. And thankfully people generally push back on that stuff because it's archaic and silly. Who are you to tell a player when he can and cannot swing due to the "unwritten rules" or something, especially when he's a fringe MLB player and not a star who's guaranteed a spot on the team next year? People also moan about analytics changing how managers manage, how players play, and so on. Celebrating home runs has also been a point of contention, with some people upset about bat flips and watching the ball fly and some embracing that.

the move hughes tried just wasn't a "hotdog" move. there's obviously been a bunch of NHL goals scored with it. it's literally called the peter forsberg move, and he never got hunted down by a goon on the ice for doing it.
