One thing players from the 90s seem to not understand is how fast games can flip. A 3 goal lead at the start of the third is not as secure as it used to be, and a team isn't going to give up and start fighting in that situation like they used to. The game was 2-0 in the first when Jack tried that move, not over by a longshot.

Back in my day, the Whalers still existed. Also, if I was in Jack Hughes' situation, I'd be doing everything I can to score on Igor. Whether it's the Forsberg, or the ol' fashioned point somewhere else and ask "what's that?" in hopes that he actually looks, or something equally outrageous. Don't really see why Valiquette was bitching about it; maybe analyze why your own team sucks instead of dunking on someone who's actually playing good hockey.

Baseball went through this. Showboat or jog too slow after a home run and someone was getting thrown at. It doesn’t happen as much anymore since the penalty for doing so has gotten more severe. The NHL could institute a “retaliation” penalty in similar situations. What has happened in MLB is that the announcers have stopped taking a negative position on celebrations and instead paint them as light-hearted expressions as long as there isn’t outright taunting, like pointing, yelling, or direct mocking of the opponent, and the players, for their part, have accepted it. Rarely do you see a pitcher pay much attention to a batter who’s just hit a homer off of them. They turn their attention to the next batter and the game goes on

I can relate to the "I don't really have a day" concept. I too only played video games (mostly EA Sports NHL '96 that I still play today) and a lot of what you talked about was evident in that game. I also always thought the concept of retribution for "unwritten code" violations or hard plays on a star player was a bit useless since the damage was already done and the retribution rarely was directed at the other team's star player so it didn't really even things up. I could understand the teams wanting that retribution in the form of a fight in the only team sport that seems to allow it but, imho, it wasn't an effective deterrent. Just like now, the refereeing needed to be better and timely. Love your videos, thanks for the great discussions.

The celebration explosion is amplified, and to a degree, encouraged, by the blaring of bumping music, after the horn sounds… remember, in most buildings, it used to just be a horn, and maybe an organ… More often than not, the home team celebrates, more ecstatically, probably because of the music, and the crowd. I don’t notice the way teams celebrating quite as heavy, unless it’s a game-winning overtime type thing.

BACK IN MY DAY, I used to sit with pencil and paper (calculators being rare and cost prohibitive to ordinary folk) and play with the numbers. So as an old fart, I was certainly into "analytics" when it was first talked about. I've thought since childhood that reducing things to data is the best way to figure out what the hell is going on. However, getting a taste of stats and data collection through working Q.A. in manufacturing, I know that definitions, parameters and data collection have to be spot on or the numbers mean nothing. I suspect a lot of Analytics we are presented with are dubious due to inconsistent data collection, bad definitions, etc.

I played (not professionally) a LONG time ago and I can understand some of the comments. My biggest beef concerns the use of the stick today. The slash on the wrist can be nasty, but we wore gloves that went up the forearm a bit instead of stopping so low. Of course a slash is going to hurt - there's no padding ... and players get more leverage on the shots. However, the accidental high sticking clip is getting ridiculous. "Back in the day" we got high sticking penalties when the stick was used as a weapon. Now a stick can deflect off many surfaces and hit an opponent, blood is drawn and there's a big penalty. OK, fine. Then it's time to make every player wear the full face shield, or at least a bar or two that prevents the stick from doing damage. They did it with helmets, then visors, which are really a half-hearted attempts to prevent injury. Let's do it properly. It's not going to hurt the game, but it will save incidental penalties and may stop significant injuries.

Back in my day we had the two line pass offsides. The game generally gets better over time. I used to hate explaining that rule to people because they would always ask a question I couldn't answer......Why?

It's funny you mention the baseball example, there was a player who hit a grand slam off a pitch that "Your not supposed to swing at" and the other team was super salty about it, the unwritten code baloney, blah blah. The coach got in front of cameras and cried about it, and the batters own coach publicly disapproved of it. It was a load of crap

I think in some sports (nfl) the penalties getting called way too much for soft things argument is 100% correct. NHL… not really

Stop doing the penalties! Maybe teams need to stop being lazy and play by the rules. Just like hockey. Stop making the refs jobs difficult and complaining both ways. They should call the book and teams/games should play by those rules. Crazy!

It's not my job to keep my puck out of your net, but there is value in resting your top two lines and getting your bottom two lines some ice time.

real ones remember when the slapshot was illegal because the puck should stay on the ice and no one really could manage to shot the puck with precision. then came Boom Boom Geoffrion with his precise slapshot and the league changed. neanderthal hockey fans will never not get angry over stupid stuff like this and it's been a staple of the NHL for a century.

Great Video, literally. The traditionalism is dying. The fact that these are the old/former player's best arguments is a sign they are losing. That MSG bloke is jealous Hughes has skill he never had. Also, it's called skill, and you have a natural hierarchy of it.

I played college-level hockey in the 1990s. The game is better now. Hockey is an emotional game. The pure idiocy of getting mad when someone celebrated a goal was shocking. Getting jumped but the goon after doing a fist bump with a teammate after scoring a goal was horseshit. Jack Hughes and the Devils are appointment television. The game is better than it was BACK IN MY DAY.

Tatis Jr hit a grand slam on a 3-0 count in a blowout a couple years ago and got crapped on pretty hard for it, so baseball is not totally immune to it

Vally didn't point it out to call Jack Hughes out for the type of player he is or the move itself. He is just looking for any reason to call the Rangers out on what they might get riled up about... but they don't, they're sad and gutless. That's why Steve said it and I agree with his statement regardless... Shits too sweet in this league now

So in baseball, you do hear a bit about running up the score. A Chicago White Sox player got in trouble with his team's manager (basically the coach) pretty publicly a few years back after hitting a home run off of a position player who came in to pitch (which only happens in blowouts). Of course, said manager is also no longer managing, but you see these "old school" unwritten rules dinosaurs in every sport. And thankfully people generally push back on that stuff because it's archaic and silly. Who are you to tell a player when he can and cannot swing due to the "unwritten rules" or something, especially when he's a fringe MLB player and not a star who's guaranteed a spot on the team next year? People also moan about analytics changing how managers manage, how players play, and so on. Celebrating home runs has also been a point of contention, with some people upset about bat flips and watching the ball fly and some embracing that.

the move hughes tried just wasn't a "hotdog" move. there's obviously been a bunch of NHL goals scored with it. it's literally called the peter forsberg move, and he never got hunted down by a goon on the ice for doing it.
