Dr. Ratio and Ruan Mei contrast each other in various ways. One seeks to teach, no matter how harshly, that even the ordinary is still a life worth living to not follow idols blindly- while hiding himself with plaster and ego (seems to hint at an insecurity and also distrust?). The other is extremely aloof and distrustful, preferring to research by herself and only asking for help when she's fully in control. Both of them are willing to use underhanded methods to get results. Design-wise, the former is drawn from Greco-Roman art and philosophy while the latter is woven from Chinese aesthetics, including her instrument. Even with their movesets, they also draw inspiration from those like the statues or the branches in Ruan Mei's ultimate. Tho, I wish they put more biology motifs on Ruan Mei to give more attention to her passion as a scientist rather than her outfit silhouette being too similar to too many Xianzhou ladies. There are plenty of other Chinese traditional garments they can glean from and make it Star Rail-styled. Writing-wise, I also prefer Dr. Ratio.

Like many pointed out, Dr. Ratio is not on the same vibes as Ruan Mei, he is an anti-hero of sorts, while Ruan Mei is on that scientist villain troupe. Aside from having his own agenda, Dr. Ratio can't stand the whole circlejerking of the Genious Society, neither their social aspects and influences. That's why he can't stand "fools", deprived of any knowledge and mostly biased concerns on world views. But at the same time, as seen in his conversation with Screwllum, Dr. Ratio is quite empathetic towards a chance to push that notion foward, to give a fair chance to everyone, despite his rude facade at first. And he did help the Space Station either way in the end. He is the main star of this patch, for sure, because he feels like a person, and hoyo did a good job showcasing his nature. Sadly, the same treatment can't be said of Ruan Mei, we only got to see her ethics (or lack of), whilst being used as her scapegoat to drive away her experiments. And the whole "you will forget about me" is pretty dumb, considering we unlock her as a guest right after 😅

I think that was moreso referring to the events that transpired. TB wouldn’t forget Ruan Mei herself. After all, she’s so involved in the Simulated Universe that it’d do more harm than good to completely delete her. She probably meant that we would forget her drugging us and sending us down to deal with Skaracabaz. Anyway, I actually like the contrast between them. Ruan Mei is a genius chosen by Nous, a hermit who lives separately from the world and hopes to ascend to Aeonhood. Meanwhile, Dr. Ratio is simply a man with a loathing for foolishness and an eagerness to teach others a lesson. It’s literally the name of the quest. Crown of the Mundane (Ratio) and the Divine (Ruan Mei).

I really liked both the characters of Ruan Mei and Dr. Ratio, not necessarily because I liked their personalities, but because of how HOYO pushed the idea of how far gone some Erudition followers can be. They're both essentially powerful, narcissistic assholes, but while Ruan Mei hides her distrustful qualities, and quietly pursues her megalomaniacal research, Dr. Ratio actively acknowledges it and tries to prove his ideals of idiocy to other people.

@@haminator1472 Yep yep, the two feel like foils to each other to me as well. They went to quite some extents to express that the followers of Erudition are knowledge-seekers, not wisdom-keepers. They're so focused on attaining more knowledge that they forget to check with their ethics departments every once in a while... I do have to agree with Ratio's line of thinking. While I'm interested in Ruan Mei and like the character in general, I like Ratio more specifically for basically being Dr. House in space. Only... nicer. Somehow. The achievement, Divine Verso, Mundane Recto, seems to say the same. The two were designed to oppose one another in scope and approach. Ruan Mei is obsessively interested in her research into the near godlike Aeons, rejecting the mundane to an extreme even as she gives life to pastries (that is weird btw, it needs acknowledgement), while Ratio is preoccupied with the effects blind worship of that kind of behavior has on regular people that can't reach those heights who will likely burn themselves in their attempts as they put the Geniuses on pedestals as models of behavior. Good stuff. Also the update where we get to see Nous the Erudition... as a robot head flying through space, learning things then looking at people and terrifying them into following his path. Weird stuff.

I feel people who think Dr Ratio’s character is portrayed as a “villain” didn’t really understand what this quest was about. This quest was a satire on the idolisation of geniuses which somewhat parallels the real world as well. Dr. Ratio despises such people and dubs them as “fools” and wants them to improve/evolve - something the genius society members would never bother with. Even Herta warned us about them. If anything Ruan Mei is more akin to a villain than Ratio

They’ve also all just been really inconsiderate and somewhat narcissistic. Herta believes she is the smartest person in the universe, and Ruan Mei treats you like a errand boy because she can’t be bothered to deal with her own problems. Screwllum is chill though, a bit distant, but at least he actually seems to care about others.

Mmm, Screwllum is shown to be chill and a gentleman so far, but he also just observed and didn't do much during the incident out of wanting to find out what would happen. Sure, none of them died, but the distress and chaos certainly happened and he was curious how it'll all turn out, so he stayed on the sidelines. We don't know much about him, but I am looking forward to getting to know more about him as someone who bridges the societies of the organics and inorganics.

At first, I thought Dr. Ratio was a jerk, but I have to agree with his reasoning and in the end, he seems far more caring than the other so-called "geniuses" who didn't care about the danger they put others in. I have more respect for him now, plus he's hot! lol I will say, this made me hate Herta more than anything. She's so full of herself and think she's so much smarter than everyone else, but she's really not and I would actually loveto see Dr.Ratio spitting bars at her, ngl. She needs to be knocked down a peg or two, because her "intelligence" has only caused others trouble. It's technically her fault that the trailblazer got in trouble, never mind Ruan Mei. It's Herta's fault for letting idiots attend that dumb genius event, idiots who think themselves as "geniuses". All arrogant and delusional as the next. Feels just like how the corrupt sages and students of the Akademiya in Genshin Impact behaved. In fact, I'm seeing a few paralells with Alhaitham and Dr.Ratio here. Though, Alhaitham isn't quite as "obnoxious" or as snooty sounding as Dr.Ratio and is more of an introvert than anything, but he does have the same muscles, is tall and hot, handsome, 5d gigabrain chess player and bookworm. Plus, they both like to do the bare minimum and are still able to get results and use their minds to solve problems without having to get overly involved.

Outside of Ruan Mei being unlikeable in terms of her actions and disregard for others, another thing I find dissaponting about her is her design. While she is pretty, there is a major clash of ideas in terms of her profession and her visual design. What I mean is look at her: Model, Listen to her theme, look at her animations during battle, and tell me if you would be able to deduct that she's a scientist The only things that are hinting at it are dna patterns here and there on her clothing, and one idle animation, outside of that she looks way more like a Xianzho hermit that occupies her time with playing Ruan, and making embroidery...

I don’t regret pulling for Ruan Mei. She’s an amazing support character don’t get me wrong. But I definitely would have thought about it more if I’d played the quest first. She just isn’t likeable in the slightest. She’s just, in my opinion, a narcissistic scientist with no concern for the chaos her experiments brings. And I have no problem with that as we do need more “morally-gray” characters honestly. Dr.Ratio though, he absolutely sweeps this patch. Sure he’s also a bit narcissistic but he actually cares about people in his own weird way. In that he knows that people, specifically the researchers here, can do a lot better if they just stopped blindly worshiping the Genius Society members and thought for themselves. He also just has a lot more personality than Ruan Mei, in that he actually has one. Overall though, I definitely enjoyed this whole questline. It was nice going back to the Space Station after so long. Ruan Meis stuff was mindless fun, mainly being just bashing bugs and listening to the stellar voice acting for the Critters, but it was fun. Meanwhile Dr.Ratios half was just way more interesting. Instead of doing errands for someone we actually helped solve a mystery.

I’m kind of okay with Ruan Mei. It’s mainly just tolerance since I don’t like her nor dislike her heavily. But before I found out she was apart of the Genius Society I thought she was just a woman who lived as a hermit on the Laofu, given her design. As other commenters have mentioned, aside from her hairpin you can’t really tell that she’s apart of The Genius Society nor what she studies which is ecology (mainly). I dunno, just compared to other characters, her design, personality and occupation just don’t match up very well. I don’t mind having a sociopathic character, but her character presentation didn’t leave a positive impression on me compared to Dr. Ratio, the snooty narcissist (and much more).

When I first saw her splash art I didn't care for her design at all. But upon further inspection of seeing her in game model, IMO it's much prettier and the splash art doesn't do it much justice. So it turns out I actually love her design. As for her personality I don't like it nor do I dislike it. I guess you could I'm indifferent to it as she is to others. It's interesting at least.😂
