Oh wow, didn't spot that before.. thought it was a bit strange she was singing 'Oh Yoko'... I wonder if she wrote the song?! After all, 'Oh, John' rhymes with 'My love will turn you on', unlike 'Oh Yoko' (although 'Oh Yoko' does kind of scan better, at least the way John sings it..) Don't forget she more or less wrote 'Imagine', or at least the basic concept and structure of the song - in her book 'Grapefruit' IIRC - without ever being credited for it.

It was an injoke of the band even before AHDN referring to Elvis or Cliff movies where someone would say that line and a song would start up out of nowhere, going into AHDN they specifically said they didn't want a “why don’t we do the show right here" type movie, then typically out of sheer sarcasm Lennon still puts it in lol

It seemed like a pretty unhealthy co-dependency in both directions. John was using Yoko to fill a deep hole in his soul caused by the absence of his parents and Yoko saw in him someone she could use to promote her own artistic vision. And the whole thing was filled with substance abuse and physical abuse.

I have never seen this footage of John and Yoko. Such a beautiful acoustic live version of a much under rated love song. It’s just so good to hear this unpolished raw version and sometimes these takes on a particular song, are often time better than the recorded interpretations we all know. Regardless of that though, any live footage of the great man is a privilege to watch and listen too. Not bad harmonies by Yoko Ono either to be fair. This is Romeo and Juliet on film and so no matter how much we think we know the man or judge his life decisions, Lennon was no mug and was clearly in Love. I think this song and the first 2 solo albums specifically, gave John a new purpose and musical identity, a new direction, a new vision. The love maker...the peace maker...the dreamer who could finally imagine. Sure he had his critics and his accusers but he was a great man ultimately, a talent so natural as to be unparalleled as a modern day songwriter. However more important than all that, he was a man who learnt to face his demons and accept the inner Angel....he eventually came to truly love and be loved. God rest his soul and may he rest in eternal peace.♥️🙏🎼x

Does anyone notice? John has got the rhythm in his hands. When you play music with John you don't need an 808 or 909. You maybe need Ringo , but John is a complete rhythm machine by himself! Peace and love to you all

Lennon's rhythm playing is pretty great I gotta also say, just listen to his "Stepping Out" demos (even if there's a drum machine involved there), it almost sounds like a finished song, just unfortunate he didn't finish it before his unfortunate & tragic death.

One of the best rhythm players of all time. Criminally underrated.

Ringo called John “the greatest rhythm guitarist ever still.” I think Clapton said the same thing. A genius with his right hand and timing

john did his best work when he was with her. He said "she completes me." I never understood why people hate her either. Its like people hating Priscilla Presley because Elvis married her, then blaming her for their breakup.

@Pete shea One could say he did his best work after #meeting# Yoko. They first met November 1966 (this was before Strawberry Fields Forever was recorded).

@Pete shea I mean... The White Album, Magical Mystery Tour, Abbey Road, not to mention his post-Beatles solo work. John died at his peak.

This a great clip. One of my favorite songs he’s written. I also find it so interesting and neat how there was the “I want you babe” part in that version. I never heard that before. Really wonder how it would’ve sounded on the studio cut. Great stuff.

The reality is John's late Beatle and post Beatle songwriting was greatly inspired by Yoko, so few if any of those great songs would have been written without her influence on John's imagination.

Thats a desperate, ridiculous attempt to give Yoko credit for something she didn't do. If he had married a kangaroo, a blow up doll or stayed single, he would still have found inspiration from HIS well of creativity and come out with great songs.

@@w1lf1ewoo It's a fair point - John was immensely creative but he wouldn't have written this (or the Plastic Ono or Imagine albums) without her in his life. Most of the lyrics from Imagine were drawn directly from Yoko's poetry, in fact. You owe it to yourself to learn a bit more about this time in John's life.
