Hi. I have IC-7300 and most of the time, bing controlled by Raspberry Pi 3B+ . To save power, we can decrease LCD's brightness. The default is 50% is bright, but currently I set it to 10%.. Yes, 10% brightness is good enough for in-door or night operations. THen I set the screen blank as fast as possible, so it will turn off the LCD screen. Since I controlling the rig using Rpi, the LCD screen still off, until I touch any buttons/dials or VFO knob. Second suggestions, is to use earphones, IEMs or headphones which are using less power than the built-in speaker. It seem that the IC-705 has WiFi/WLAN feature, and we may able to remotely operate the rig wirelessly.. From what I found, IC-705 may be on sale (in Japan), on March 2020.. :) Looking forward your future video on IC-705. Thank you, Bahathir 9W2GNU, 73.

Whats wrong with using a small manual antenna coupler? With only 10w PEP output, one could be made very compact and inexpensively. Regardless, this should be a huge success for ICOM and a great rig for those into field portable op's. Looking forward to your next video Julian. 73 De Stew, VK4SC

This radio is estimated to hit the retail market at about £1000 and that is way out of my price range and to be fair I am more than happy with my 817 and 857D for portable use. I have built my system to work on solar and lightweight lipo batteries all of which can easily be carried, I have better things things to spend £1000 on. I only use resonant homebrew antennas so I have never used a tuner and can build one very quickly out of any little bit of wire. This really is a lovely looking radio and has stuff on the screen that some will find very useful, but my little 817 can get me to the USA, Europe and even Australia on 5w with some patience. Thank you so much for your review and as always is very well balanced and informative.

There is an iPad app available and a Mac app that can be used to remote control and use FT8 on the IC-705. This is one of the reasons I am seriously looking to get one of these radios in the new year. The points you raise in your video are very much why I am considering this rig.

Simply stated, I trust your reviews and I trust very little of what is said on the internet. I'm already elbows deep in Icom transceivers so this is easy, but brand loyalty only goes so far. Icom is however clearly leading the industry, but we are very fortunate to have so many increadible choices from so many manufacturers. Until the sun spot cycle improves propagation, weak signal work on digital modes with QRP only makes sense. Having a pan adapter/band scope built-in is now the defacto standard, but I still turn mine off and just listen. Remember, It's training as much as it is fun !

I love my Xiegu G90 with 20 watts (all the time) using a 12Ah LiFePO4 battery and a 10-80M HWEF antenna. Since the G90 has an antenna tuner, I don't have to worry about setting up the antenna (which is resonant) in "less than ideal" field conditions which will effect even a resonant antenna. Not having a tuner is the biggest "pass" in my eyes. Granted it's an external battery, but I can do 20 watts ALL the time for upwards of 6 hours (before I put my portable solar charger). And everything (including fishing line and sling shot and battery monitor, fits into a tiny go pack that is only 12" x 9.5" x 6". Also, with EVERYTHING, my go kit, including the G90 and battery, comes in at $810. I would be surprised if 705 comes in at less than $1000 just for the radio.
@OH8STN
@OH8STN 5 жыл бұрын
Very valid points and extremely reasonable. As I've mentioned previously I passed on the g90 because there's no internal audio interface. So if you're doing digital most they're still going to be the cable mess. There's also that tiny little screen. On the flip side Playing devil's advocate, if I were operating CW or SSB, perhaps I wouldn't need the larger screen. But I really like manipulating those filters in real time. Anyway awesome comment great feedback thank you very much for sharing it with us. It's very much appreciated.

I'm looking to get into SotA, which is essentially off-grid communication. This is a perfect radio since hiking with additional weight is cumbersome. This simplifies a lot, although I wish more radio, especially ones designed with portable field use in mind, contained antenna tuners. I understand it would increase power consumption and add some weight, but it would simply operation so much.

Strongly considering one depending on the price point. I currently don't have any HF gear and am just getting back into ham radio after several years of inactivity. Most, if not all, of my operating will be portable and this looks it will check almost all the boxes. I would not mind using a separate tuner but I hope Icom comes up with a dedicated accessory tuner either internal or as an attached external module.

Your evaluation of this new rig is, I feel, entirely appropriate it's upside potential. I think ICOM is now the leader in the field of QRP rigs. I entirely agree that the emergence of digital QRP is one reason why this radio has included features which clearly support this kind of operation. Likewise, the ability to charge from a USB port seems like the ICOM folks have been watching your channel and noted your innovations and creative solutions. They've taken all that in and made it a part of their new design.

While I understand the lack of a built -in antenna tuner, the question of how large can (or should) this radio be(come) comes to mind as well. Also, DC current draw would increase somewhat with an internal tuner, as would the cost of R&D and the eventual sale price. If I wanted to carry an IC-7300 around for portable use, it would have the tuner and more power output, but would suck down a battery in fairly short order. I have considered a KX3, but that is now a long distance down my list. I owned the FT-817ND a few years ago, but even the "818" would need many options to even approach what the IC-705 should be able to do. I am optimistic this early introduction is more of a "trial balloon", and that hardware, firmware, and software changes will be made before this radio reaches the market, as it should be. ICOM has numerous active hams doing the R&D, and we may well be a source of suggestions and ideas for the finished product.

This is a pretty cool looking rig but I'm a less is more kind of guy. Unless it comes in at a great price that I can't resist (it probably won't) I'm not the target market for this one. It just feels like it's an appliance that won't challenge me to hone my craft which is part of the fun for myself. I'm still baffled by the battery pack choice but going with external power is quite common for many who love QRP operations. I hope it does drive down the FT-818 used market so I can pickup backup radios for short money and be quite happy. Cheers!

Yep, each of us has our own vision of the "perfect" qrp field radio. I remember nearly two decades ago, after purchasing my first 817. One of my closest friends referred to it as, "an appliance". The funny thing is that same guy, still one of my closest friends, criticized me about this video and this rig (all in good fun). Once again choosing the word "Appliance", to describe the 705. He's also very happy with the 817 these days. Anyway, thanks for the comment. Differing perspectives and opinions is what makes discussions like these, so interesting. 73 Julian oh8stn

Nice video Julian. I have two sugestions for the new IC 705 rig...(things I would like the radio had...) 1. the power-plug should have been a bajonet-stile plug, so it will be more secure. 2. the missing atu is a big minus... hope they will make an attachment unit that can be assambled on the back. Also Icom should make more software outlines, so you can change the screen into different looking outline. One software could be for specific channel use, without waterfall, (for phone com/emcom). and other futures could be lined up in a selection of different software outlines.(make your own screen on your radio - type of...) A handle-set on the side would be nice, and I wonder if Icom would make a 50-100w amp to the model ? I will be looking forward to this item in my collection.. rgds fm oz1fjb - ou2v

I currently use a Flex 1500 with a Surface tablet for my go kit. I love the ideal of having UHF/VHF all in one radio. I am also interested in moving to the Raspberry Pi for lower power requirements. I think if Flex wants to stay in the QRP game then need to come out with something quickly. I have no issue with having no built in tuner. My current station has no built in tuners, I use external or resonant antennas. Icon has a winner if the product delivers as advertised.

Julian, Thanks for posting this introduction to this new and pre-release rig, Although it is not out yet, I can say your assessment resonates with mine. I would like to add that I'm not that impressed with ICOM at this point with their screen interfaces given that several 7610's are having screen issues. Also completely different platform such as this just begs issues if they have not been thoroughly field tested before release. I really hope that issues don't plague this rig. I think for the market, this new concept is a much needed push in the direction of SDR and smaller component designs. It would not be possible without technology advancements to make that happen. I am glad to see that ICOM is doing that and attempting to be a new front runner in Field Ops type gear. I will give Elecraft and Yeasu for starting that market. Keep on posting great content.

If I have to find an issue with it, it would be the lack of an internal tuner. Specially because the kx2 comes with a really useful one, and both radios roughly have the same size. I know that we can use a linked dipole as an antenna, but it would be a very nice feature to have.

Let me add something to your list. 5. micro-USB port instead of using USB-C - The design flaw of micro-USB cables using "fangs" will cause people to have to buy USB cables again and again when those "fangs" retract into the housing, the only solution will be to throw them out and buy new ones until they do the same once again.

Julian, I agree with you on the attractiveness of this radio. The only drawback I see, will be the price and the fact it can only produce 10 watts. I would love to see a real world field comparison between the IC 705 and the Xiegu G90 with its internal antenna tuner and 20 watt power output. If the IC 705 could produce at least 20 watts, I would not hesitate to buy this radio. It would be a great companion for my IC 7300. In my mind their is no question the internal audio codec and the USB CAT control are the most important features of the IC-705 for portable field operations. I am going on a trip this weekend for a family member’s wedding. I am thinking about taking my FT-817 and 20m resonant antenna to keep the amount of gear low and simplicity of operation. However, the above set-up limits me to voice only on 20m only. If I want to add any digital mode I have to also carry the SignaLink and multiple cables. I have the luxury of a suitcase to carry it all and a guest house to operate in, yet I am still looking at just going with voice only on 20m to keep it simple. Internal audio codec means I can operate several different digital modes if SSB is flat. All I have to add is the one USB cable for the computer I am already taking.

Interesting thoughts and good video Julian! In my opinion it is a qrp but not a portable field radio. Whats lacking is some kind of robustness. The display might get damaged in the field very easily. I wonder how readable it is in the sunlight. The radio is not waterproof nor is it dustproof (in fact none of the mentioned KX2/3 and FT-817/818 are). No internal atu is a big disadvantage. A good resonant antenna is great, but there might be shtf situations where you only have 20m of wire....Better to have a tuner and don't need it then needing one and having none :-) The battery concept is really great indeed! If we focus on HF bands, the KX2 is still the better radio, internal ATU, internal battery, display readable even in direct sunlight, very lightweight. But a mess with cables for digital modes and not robust at all. I used my FT-817ND for nearly a decade now operating portable, no tuner, battery is a joke, but still a good radio. I retiered it when I got my KX2. Maybe Elecraft will bring out a KX4... :-) But I am sure I am going to give the IC-705 a try anyway as soon as it is available :-) 73, Stephan, DF6PA

I do not see 2 hours operation on the battery pack. The pack is 7.4V not 12V. 1880 mAh represents 13.9 Watthours. The manual says that that the IC7300 on standby current is 0.9A at 13.8V which is 12.2 Watts. That is if we only receive. I figure that there will be some receive current draw improvements since the IC7300 was released but we have more bands and it would be nice to transmit once in a while. In any event this will probably be a great radio. Game changer Yaesu.

A sound card is nice I don't do much digital so not important to me really and I have capabilities anyway but if the ic-705 doesn't come with a built in tuner Icom missed on a new radio with radios like KX2, KX3 and the many Chinese radios that offer this already and if they come out with a 3:1 tuner miss again when the Elecraft's can tune just about anything I think 10:1?(not that that always works lol). It is nice to see Icom finally get into this market again and this will probably get Yaesu and Kenwood to come out with some new radios based on SDR format. I also think with the bands the way they are a 25 watt radio would be nice. Thanks for the info.

You know buddy, I'm really going to enjoy arguing with you on this topic 😀👍👍👍 To be fair, I don't see a reason for operator who is primarily working CW, to buy this radio, if they already have something like the kx1. If CW were my primary mode, I think I would stick with the KX1. For the operator working below the noise floor, this is a magnificent rig. The display and user interface, instant qsy, wrapping those filters tightly around that -23 SNR signal. That my friend, that's what it's all about. 😊 I've already started saving up my tokens. Let's see in the spring, maybe I'll come down there and visit you so we can compare the kx2 to the 705 Head to head for kicks and giggles.

@@OH8STN Julian, I hope you will make a video out of that comparison because I have a feeling several others will wanna see that as well, I have heard complaints online that people won't be able to do satellites or the ISS as the IC-705 won't have full duplex, I haven't done any satellites as of yet with my ft-857D so it is a subject which I am not familiar with to be honest. My main gripe might seem small and petty but it is something that truly annoys me, it is the inclusion of a micro-USB port instead of a USB-C port, both my cellphone and my Tablet has a micro-USB and I now have 5 micro-USB cables which are now garbage, the "fangs" on the bottom of the connector which holds it in place has completely retracted so now my cables refuse to charge either of my devices and as soon as I plug them in they fall out and drop to the floor as the "fangs" that are supposed to hold onto the device are now completely retracted, the bottom of the connector is totally flat and it is impossible to pull them out once again so all I can do with these cables are to just chuck them into the garbage which is what I am sure I am gonna have to do with the USB cable for the IC-705, this wouldn't be a problem though if they had thought ahead and built a USB-C port instead of the micro-USB port. What are your thoughts on the subject of the Full Duplex complaint regarding satellite transmissions and also on the issue of using the faulty micro-USB design in the IC-705?? Thanks in Advance, 73 de VE3DKK
@OH8STN
@OH8STN 5 жыл бұрын
Well I don't know if there's full-duplex on VHF UHF or not yet. Neither does anybody else. I hope there is, but if there's not, it wouldn't be a deal-breaker. Since VHF and UHF portion is based on the 9700, it is my hope, nothing more. I know operators who like to use dual ft-817/857 rigs for sats. I think that's a working hack designed to allow operators a cheap way of working transponder satellites with gear they already have. It is portable however. For satellites I prefer using purpose-built gear. My sat rigs are a Kenwood D7, Icom 910h, and Kenwood D700, all of which were purpose-built for full duplex Communications with satellites. The 910h is also well suited for transponders as an all mode rig. Anyway working satellites isn't why I want this rig. Narrow bandwidth data modes on HF is why I want it, and practically what it's been designed for. If a SAT guy is telling me that his niche of a niche of a niche portion of this Hobby, is the reason he doesn't like an otherwise magnificent radio, I would wonder why he isn't considering the 9700. It's much more practical using purpose-built gear full duplex rigs for satellites like I do. I think there's a difference between the way I look at this radio, and others simply trying to find ridiculously silly things to complain about it. I'm looking at the Innovative features this radio has as an QRP HF rig. I'm comparing it 1/1 with the ft-818 as QRP HF rigs. If I wanted to do satcoms, I would not be considering an HF rig with add-on VHF/UHF. I'd buy a 9700 which I'm planning on anyway. As for the USB cable. It's about as annoying as my neighbors playing disco music late on a Friday night.

Very nice presentation. It would be very neat for Icom or a 3rd party to make an accessory that would fasten onto the back with an auto tuner, 12 volt battery and perhaps a small amplifier. So when you need maximum portability use it bare; but when an additional pound or so isn’t an issue you’ve easily got more capability. I suspect there’ll be a whole industry of accessories built around this. How about a package with raspberry pi, small display, power and tuner. It’s going to be an exciting time. After our every Saturday breakfast, my club The 220Mhz Guys, usually head off to the woods to do a mini field day. A nice compact package built around the IC-705 would be super. WA9NNN, Dick

I think the small Elecraft tuner (T1 ATU) would be a good companion. I see in the Icom highlights from the Tokyo radio show, that they have a small back pack like carrier for the radio. One thing I do have on my 7300 is the Portable Zero escort rails to protect the dials and rotary encoder, I wonder it something like that can be created for the 705? Thinking a small manual ATU would be lightweight enough if needed. I would not want to spend extra money on a bunch of little 2ah batteries for this. Instead rather use an external LiFePO4 battery pack like you made then I would be able to use the full 10 watts. With all the light weight high watt hour battery options available this day and age including solar panels for field use I could care less about this thing using more power for the screen. Even the 891 with a full 100 watts is easy to use in the field with a homemade LiFePO4 battery. So I don't think we need to be too worried about power use like we did 20 years ago. The nice big bright usable display would be well worth it to me. Now I need to find the best QRP manual ATU to use with this. I seen many out there not sure which is best and most easy to use, your thoughts?

Totally agreed. I've got a video incoming about powering these types of radios eg Icom ic-705, the xiegu g90, mchf, x5105, 818, kx2, ... Most people concerned about the high amperage draw of modern Riggs, probably have little experience with lithium or lithium iron phosphate batteries. They're basing the opinions on lead acid experience. You're going to love the new portable power options incoming all the channel. Personally I think I'm going to stick with resonant antennas for these low-power rigs. There are a couple of good Ultra small tuners from elecraft and sotabeams, for those who want them. Is it for audio/mic only, or have they incorporated keyboard/mouse input for data entry for rtty/psk. Doesn't look to be a lot of cooling capacity given a pa running at up to 10w, hope frequency drift isn't a problem especially for data modes. Would also like to see it ruggedised more. I guess it'll fine on the coffee table but not sure in the field. A few suggestions; powerpoles, usb-c, grab handles, the vfo looks a little low if on a desk for comfortable use given there's no bail stand. This compact radio offers a lot of things I miss in KX-3. Maybe the KX-3 display is not so bad, but portable operating digital with KX-3 requires either high level of proficiency in high speed keying (with paddles) or an uncomfy bunch of additional boxes and cables. Internal battery - I threw internal AA cell holders from inside the KX-3 long, long time ago. NiMH was too heavy and I miss an option to "upgrade" to LiPol cells (not AA, obviously, but something much more space-efficient). Direct USB connection, dismissed by Elecraft designers as "generating too much noise"... I just hope the new IC-705 will come out cheaper than was KX-3 with all their bells and whistles.

Thanks for the IC705 review, it should be very popular. How about a performance review ? I’m a CW and digital operator and have operated from the local hills and from Trips to Europe. IMHO the Elecraft KX-1 (and others of similar size) are easy traveling radios while the KX-3 seems vulnerable to damage although I’ve not had any problems. the Yaesu FT817/818 are easy traveling radios as well because they are in a flat box, its easy to protect the front panel and easy to stash in my back pack however the Yaesu is heavy and typically I don’t carry batteries on the airplanes so that saves TSA hassle and weight. I would be impressed with LESS cables and after experiencing SDR performance I would be interested in a 705 to replace my other recently portable radios. One last comment, HF Hill topping seems so much fun with a Simple 2 knob rig, are those days gone now ?

Thanks for the comments. For my brief time operating CW in this hobby, a lightweight 2/3 band qrp kit radio or something like a KX1, would have been beautiful. There is nothing lighter or more compact than a CW only rig. Unfortunately that's also the downside. It's lightweight and easy to carry, but only does CW. As I alluded to in the video, it depends very much on the Operators unique operating style, and operating goals. The KX3 is extremely delicate however, its user interface is absolutely magnificent. The 817/818 is definitely flat and easy to pack. When operating any other mode than CW, all the supporting equipment to go along with the 817/818 makes it a moot point. In fact, this is one of the points of the video. We are not only operating CW anymore. With the horrific propagation we experience on a daily level these days, it's not uncommon to work signals at or below the noise floor. Then only if you can pull that signal in. So having the filters and/or DSP to pull those signals out of the noise, is critical. We can't work a station we can't hear, or with modern rigs see This is why rigs such as the KX2, KX3, mcHF, Xiegu x5105, FT-891, IC-7300, exist. They allow the operator to focus on that very weak signal, down in the noise. To answer your question. There will always be those operators focused on nostalgia and tradition. In contrast there all those operators who enjoy FT contesting, or data nets over HF. None of them are any more or less important than the others. With rigs like the 705, we have the choice to do it all. Thanks for taking the time to write your comments and feedback. It's very much appreciated. 73 Julian oh8stn

That's not starter price. Took me 2 years to put a few extra bucks aside. I have no regrets in that purchase. But I fear here that the 705 will sit in the $1500 range. That's just way to much. Julian, as always an excellent video, with some very good points. Like you I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of this radio, and as you said, Icom just about wiped out the market for the Yaesu FT-817/818 with this announcement. My concern about the radio has nothing to do with the internals - whatever they are they will be better than just about anything currently on the QRP market. My real concern is survivability and, more specifically, how well will this radio can stand up to constant field use. Icom isn't marketing this as a 'shack queen'; it's clearly designed to go to the field. Yet it doesn't seem to have even a basic IP rating (or as someone commented on FB, "it'll have the IP rating of whatever zip lock bag you put it in"). I also have concerns about how well the touch screen will stand up to dusty & humid conditions. Still, I'm sure there'll be one in my field kit in the next year or two!

You're absolutely right I'm very disappointed in my Yaesu ft-818 so disappointed I got rid of it I am not impressed no difference from that to the 817 very upset I'm looking at this Icom 105 very seriously I believe it's going to be a winner but I hope it's not overly expensive tell me your thoughts on it thank you for your great presentation and your video like always

I totally agree with you. I was very disappointed with the Yaesu ft-818 , so much so that I'm a video on why the "update" was a fail. As far as pricing goes, I think we're going to see the same thing we saw with the ft-818. The big ham radio channels in partnership with the ham radio retailers would drive be retail price of the 705 up initially. This is really a shame, but it's how things work. After some time the price will come down and people like you and me will be able to afford it. The wonderful thing which should happen, is manufacturers like elecraft and Yaesu will have to step up. No one will buy those radios anymore if they don't consider the data mode operator in the field.

@@joeframo3347 Hey Joe. It's a great question but honestly I didn't speculate and I don't have any idea. I'm hoping it comes in around the same as a kx2 or less. My fear is that the retailers will drive the price up higher initially.

Proprietary batteries tend to be expensive making the value of USB charging even greater bc you can use a far cheaper usb battery to extend power. Presuming average use, what size/power solar panel would keep this perpetually charged?

Great video as usual 👍❗️ I am from the old, old, school of hams, like 1955 vintage and I do not do digital of any kind, BUT ❗️ it’s not to say i won’t, in the future. See an old man can even be open minded, I am trying to decide weather to get the 706 or the Elicraft And getting too old to venture out but I am going to have something small, versatile, and portable at the drop of a hat.

I really like it and will buy it.. but I would really like that it has a little more power for kicks... At least 20W. I am not so into QRP for now, but who knows...

Yup, I love my Xiegu G90 with 20 watts (all the time) using a 12Ah LiFePO4 battery and a 10-80M HWEF antenna. Since the G90 has an antenna tuner, I don't have to worry about setting up the antenna (which is resonant) in "less than ideal" field conditions which will effect even a resonant antenna.

Hi..does this mean, if you were just getting into this field, you would go strait to the ICOM IC-705, by passing your previous set up.?

This is a magnificent question! We must consider I have a qro set up, and I have a qrp setup. My qro setup is the ft-891 and that is fine as it is. My qrp setup that's the Yaesu ft-817 with the 10 watt amplifier and Raspberry Pi. If I had to do it all over again, building up a new qrp radio I would buy immediately the IC 705. There's no chance I would ever by the ft-818 again. Absolutely wonderful question and I'm surprised no one asked me sooner. Thanks for the question and thanks for watching. 73 Julian oh8stn

I agree that there Ft818 was a failure and thought the same when I first saw it. I got the KX3 in 2018 for field portable use in Greenland and Svalbard while doing geology field work. The cables and coupling of RF on the sound card was detrimental. The low power on receive allowed for prolonged battery used, but with generators for field equipment, it was not as necessary. For light weight operations where size and weight really matter, especially when ham radio is not a primary or secondary activity, the more efficient KX2/3 may be better. However, once external interfacing with a computer for digital modes and if the screen can be shut off, the IC705 looks to be an excellent solution, especially if you are around non-hams and they can see what is going on. IC705 Cons: Working with dirty hands or very cold conditions, the touch screen could be a problem. I'd be worried about scratching the screen, or finger dexterity with or without gloves. Other than that, the layout and specs look to be excellent for portable operations that don't require ultra light and small system. If this was around when I was buying, I would definitely consider it. Thank you for your excellent input on the new system and the potential it has. I always enjoy your content.
