Hello Operators.
Back in September 2019, Icom introduced the Icom IC-705 QRP SDR ALL MODE transceiver, at the Tokyo ham fair. The Icom ic-705 is an HF VHF UHF ALL-Mode QRP rig competing directly with rigs like Elecraft KX2, KX3, and the Yaesu FT-818. in this video you'll get the latest news about this innovative new qrp radio from icom.

I know you've done a lot of homebrew on power systems, but have you ever consider doing a homebrew radio using something like a uBTIX to get exactly what you want in one package? It would be a lot of work and I am not sure if the performance would be up to it not not. I'm curious what you think?

@@stewartrv Hi Stewart. Actually yes. Many have asked for a uBitx style build for the channel. I didnt want to do just another standard build, but instead do something utilitarian. So I have a very interesting take on one from an all-in-one perspective. I dont know when I can get the uBitx here, but hopefully the lockdown wont delay the project too much.

It's hard to believe that people are hating so much over the IC-705. I think Icom got it right by leaving out an autotuner on a small QRP radio that most people should be using with a more efficient resonant antenna. It's not difficult to make a simple and lightweight wire antenna (dipole or end fed wire) that's resonant on 80m, 40m, 20m, 15m and 10m. I shouldn't be forced to carry a radio that's 50% larger and heavier and 20% more expensive so that someone can tune a barbed wire fence for a 5% efficient radiator. If I have a minor nit to pick, I think Icom could have designed the 705 so an optional autotuner could snap on the back for those who want one and it'd be integrated into the 705's operation. Similarly, Icom could also offer a much larger auxiliary battery that also snaps onto the back. While we're spit balling 705 wish lists, a very cool hack would be an Icom mag loop designed to work with the 705 that was large enough in diameter to be a very efficient antenna yet very lightweight and compact for portable operation, with an autotuner that is controlled automatically by the 705. Hopefully, the receive current is very low and there's a menu setting that allows the backlight to automatically switch off to save power after a user defined period of not using the user interface.

An internal ATU would be nice but I have next to me at the moment an EMTECH ZM-2 ATU that is small and works very well. It and a patch cable add very little weight to the backpack. Looking forward to seeing the IC-705 in person soon. And I can add that I LOVE my Elecraft KX2 but agree with your comments about them.

I really enjoyed the comparisons and your personal reasons for not purchasing the Elecraft. A good comparison on why it doesn't work for your specific needs. If anything, the Icom 705 will force manufacturers to re-think and improve their products for our benefit. For this reason alone, I think you have pointed out the Icom 705 is a winner.

Hi, I agree with the points made. And in fact I never understood why radios get criticised before anyone has the chance to really use one. I have noticed across the net lots of people whinging about the lack of ATU. I would be really surprised if someone doesn't come up with a "bolt on" mini ATU that powers up and has band control via the USB. Myself use a linked dipole (20/17/10m + 6m with clip on wires on the 17m/18MHz section ie 17MHz x 3 = 51 MHz) with my FT817. No ATU required! When the IC705 comes out, I going to give it serious consideration.

BTW, It should be noted that there is an aftermarket Mod for changing out the internal batteries of the KX3 and replacing them with LiFePO4 power, and I am considering doing just that. I got a Turnigy LiFeP04 4 S 8.4 Ah battery from Hobby King, It will run my 100 watt FT-891 no problem. Best thing is that I can charge it at 15 amps on my RC balance ( charge 8.4 ah in about 45 mins from flat ) charger but compact 4S balance chargers can be got. The only thing with these batteries is that without BMS you need to monitor the voltage and not let it fall below 10v, but I have a battery voltage monitor to monitor that. A BMS can fail anyway causing damage to the battery. 15 amps charging, that's fantastic, parallel 2 for 16.8 ah and charge them at 30 amps ! gota love Lithium. Kinda makes the internal battery of the IC-705 seem rather sad.

Thank you, and awesome review as always. I have a KX3 that I assembled with the tuner ($1,400). I got it for field portable in the Arctic and general use for SSB and digital. I absolutely love the receiver, current draw, ease of use, screen size, and tuner capability. I don't use the internal battery AA holder out off concern for opening and closing the case. I made my own heat sink because the stock heat spreader is insufficient for digital. I also think it is a little fragile and not dust or water resistant. The cost of the px3 is prohibitive for me currently. If the icom 705 was available 3 years ago, I would have heavily considered it. I don't regret my purchase, but the built in panadapter and VHF UHF all mode is promising.

I completely agree, Julian. I expect that by the time the IC-705 becomes available, other manufacturers will be scrambling to include similar features in their radios. As the IC-7300 was a game-changer in the industry, I suspect so too will the IC-705 be. And btw, I don't own a 7300, but I'm sure as heck considering the 705 for QRP use. I also happen to prefer resonant antennas. I have nothing against antenna tuners; they certainly have their place. But the fact is, a resonant antenna will transfer more of the power from the radio as signal than will a tuned antenna. And for QRP use, that's non-trivial. Thanks for another great video!

Yes I use the MP1 and EFHW and with the MP1 tuner is a non issue, however, with the EFHW it is an issue if I want to make a contact on a non resonant band, for instance, One of my EFHW works on 40,20,15 and 10m, usually I won't be on more than 40 or 20 m during the day portable, but there have been times I've had the FT-891 and heard 17 was open and couldn't work the band because I hadn't the MP1. With the tuner in the G90 this is not an issue, sure it's not going to be as efficient as a resonant EFHW for 17 but the tuner still allows me make contacts. With the IC-705 in the same situation all I could do is listen to that contact I haven't a hope to work.

I already have the ID-51A +2, so for me the IC-705 makes sense. I have the same batteries, D-Star, and will work great in emergencies when portable. Listening to the other portable radios, this has the most features and ease of use for me. I like that the IC-705 can be in use while charging the battery. Some of the local ham kind of laugh and say it is a joke. It is easy to which from portable in the car use to the base station, all in one unit. Thank you Julian for all your great video, till learning, Gene. I pre-ordered mine a month ago, looking froward to using it.

I have gotten rid of antenna tuners and have chosen to build resonant antennas. My home made magnetic loops never need a tuner, other than the variable capacitor on the antenna, to pre-check vswr, I use a Comet MK2-500 analyzer/cross meter. Tuners are half antenna match, half dummy load, resonance solves so many other issues. 73's N7XO

Ok, I’m a bit crazy, but I can afford it. Because I have homes both in Texas and Thailand and am interested in emergency, possibly post HEMP communications, I have a LOT of radios. Must admit I’m a big Elecraft fan. I have 2 Elecraft K2’s that I built 20 years ago. Even went through the extreme pain and covered the cost of sponsoring getting the K2 certified to import to Thailand. I paid over $3,000 to the Thai NBTC and purchased two KX2’s to get certified in Thailand and am still waiting for that after a year. I have a lot of small mono band QRP rigs of various brands. I build about 10 a year. I have a few Yaesu FT-817’s. I have over 10 KX2’s and 10 KX3’s in Texas. A couple of K3’s in Texas and 4 K4’s on order. I love Elecraft radios. I keep most of my radios in custom built Faraday cages to protect against CME’s and HEMP. I keep some on my Sailboat that sleeps 6 people with an isolated back stay that I can load up. But it’s impossible to get modern rigs with 6 meters legal in Thailand for the general population. Special versions of the Icom IC-7300 and 7610 with 6 meters disabled by Icom are legal here. So I have a Icom IC-7300 and Icom-7610. Nice rigs. I find them a bit less intuitive navigating menus than Elecraft and the Icom noise reduction and noise blankers I find decent but inferior to Elecraft. But they are very nice rigs. But I see some real advantages to the Icom IC-705 and have ordered 2. I’m excited about the 705 and can’t wait to get them. No radio is best at everything. In many areas it looks like a leader. I expect I’ll eventually buy more. It is fun to operate rigs in Texas over the internet in Texas. I must say I love your KZbin channel. If you ever get to Thailand I have extra bedrooms on the ocean. Hi Julian, only yesterday found your channel when searching for LiFePo battery videos. I am an UK ham and I used to exclusively operate /P using my FT817 and SLA battery power. So I am now very interested in your videos describing how to make battery packs. Many thanks! Regarding the IC-705, I can't wait! I think that Icom "knocked it out of the park" (to use an Americanism) with the revolutionary IC-7300. I was straight in the waiting list for one of these rigs and I was not disappointed once it arrived. Interestingly I have seen so many friends and members of my local club buy this rig. It really must be flying off the shelves. OTOH I was VERY disappointed when Yaesu brought out the pathetic FT818. For many years I was eagerly waiting to see how the FT817 would evolve, and was massively disappointed (and amused) at the FT818 specifications. Sorry Yaesu IMO it was just "lazy". Certainly no reason to "upgrade" from my FT817 (which was my first rig and together with the IC-7300 still my favourite). With recent Yaesu rig releases I couldn't help thinking that they have completely failed - no SDR, no 70MHz (for UK and Europe). The IC-705 once again has me excited to think about going out QRP /P operating from battery power. Once they become available and the initial teething problems are sorted out, I will definitely purchase one. Apologies to any Yaesu fanboys who I might have offended (in my defence I do have 2 Yaesu rigs the FT817 which I love and the FT857 which I never really liked). Just FYI I don't care about not having an ATU. I would like to see a bigger integrated/clip-in battery pack, but I guess that this will probably get made by 3rd party manufacturers. In the meantime I will build a battery pack based on some of your designs. Best 73's M1GRY

... tnx Julian, great video as usual. Have both the FT 891, just purchased and a Xeigu G90... price point of both being a major consideration...The IC 705 isn't cheap either, but in all you get a lot of radio for very little money. Neither are perfect and both have their strengths and weaknesses, that cheap power connector on the Xeigu being one, fixed that one quick. Both the Xeigu and the FT 891 could easily live in a tank, robustness rather than counting milliamps was a major consideration. I too run my radio from a battery with a 100w solar panel on the roof charging same. I live in a sunny climate so this is practical....Julian, I simply can't see the sense in taking an expensive Elecraft KX3 out into the bush. I don't think it was ever designed for that. You're absolutely right. The Elecraft was never designed for tough days in the field. It's a gentleman's radio meant for a park bench, beach chair,... yeah. The 891 was an excellent radio, but at this latitude, the weight and the current consumption couldn't be justified on foot. The G90 is better in that regard. At the moment, my favorite field radio is the 705. My most rugged and most efficient is the tx500. Coupling either of them with a PA500 amp offers some interesting advantages for qro ops on foot. These will never be the cheapest Solutions, but definitely the most efficient. It great having options. 73 Julian oh8stn

Excellent comparison Julian! Two hearts are beating in my chest :-) I use a KX2 (2 Years) and a FT-817ND (10 years) Power supply of both are a pain in the back, your right in that point. The FT-817 has no builtin tuner, both don't have a sound card built in. What a modern radio should have, Powerpole connectors, built-in batteries (chargable inside the radio) and USB charging options. Built-in tuner, built-in soundcard an cat device on a single wire. Waterfall display is really nice, but no real benefit out in the field in my opinion. All bands (160-6) would be great too. A modern qrp or better outdoor radio should be robust too. IP67 would be nice. :-) I surely will buy a 705 as soon as it gets available. Right now I am a KX2 fanboy, but other fathers have nice daughters too :-) Time will tell. 73, Stephan, DF6PA

I had a 'fully loaded' £1800 KX3 and sold it. It just felt too "precious" and I constantly fretted about it out in the field. I switched to an 818 which I just 'throw' into a rucksack and go outdoors having fun. In fact I take it out a LOT more than I did the KX3 and therefore get more contacts as a result! I will very likely buy a 705 because at home I use a 7610 and so it will feel very familiar to me. I will never sell my fabulous 818 though

Even when the delay I'll probably still reserve this radio. It's incredibly interesting and for my operating is near perfect. I primarily operate digital and 10-20w is the perfect amount of power for my requirements. I don't do qro or voice much (my G90 hand mic is tossed in a bag somewhere because it's always hooked up to my soundcard for digital) I've head much more success on digital. Also with my operating environment being rather sub optimal..loop antenna indoors I want to use what I can have the most success on. And re antenna tuner I use a loop so I don't need to use my G90 tuner. That feature while nice goes completely unused. Something that would be useful for more radios is a one wire interface (and proper internal shielding and isolation of a soundcard) that can work on all operating systems. Not just windows with special drivers. I say this with a low power raspberry pi Linux computer or similar system in mind. That or a completely integrated unit that doesn't require an external computer to operate all the digital modes out there (not just CW and RTTY or decode) but an integrated arm computer that can run the software for the digital modes to simplify further the setup keeping it in the radio. Since it's all implemented in an open source manor no issues with licensing. So at that point you'd just need the radio an antenna and you power system and shelter for the field. I've also looked at elecraft but it's looks compact but it's deceptively a mess at full deployment. Even at home I want my setup clean and with as little wires as possible. And the setup for digital is a complete mess. Edit. I have a Icom ID-51A plus 2 and got the upgraded battery for it(BP-272). And just learned it's the same one that'll be used in the IC-705. Having a battery that works in my hand heald or HF rig will be invaluable. Additionally using a stardard icom battery and not some weird inbuilt is an excellent design choice. The battery it'll use Is extremely light weight (pricey but isn't everything with this hobby) so you could take a few of them that sit on the charger until you're ready. Throw them in your bag with barely any added wright. And have an emergency backup batteries in case solar isn't available or you need to communicate but conserve the solar battery and let it charge. It really gives many options that'll be extremely valuable in the field. I also just bought a reservation for it. It's an extremely exciting radio to say the least. The inclusion of the G90 and 705 in my arsenal I think will make for an extremely robust and versatile station. While it's fun to get caught in the massive setup, ultimately my goal is to get the most effective and efficient station for me while minimizing the amount of gear for it. But not minimalism to the point of compromise or vulnerability. And having a backup radio fills a massive vulnerability in my current setup. In my eyes danger of relying on one radio is stuff can happen and the radio can break or act up. (I've already had to reflash my G90 multiple times to fix issues with it. And with my first dual band handheld having it stop working in the middle of a tornado emergency (EF-4 on the ground close to my location type tornado emergency.) So been of the mind always have backups ) Now it might work perfectly. We all want gear to work 100% all the time, most of the time it works. However, The realty is though stuff breaks and acts up against our wishes. In case something happens there's the option to seamlessly switch radios and be back in business with a backup. And if you have the ability to fix on site doing that to get back to full capacity again. But just my thoughts Thanks for making the video! 73, KE8GAH

This was an amazing comment. The opposition to what we are saying is so strong sometimes I doubt myself. Comments like these and some of the others, support the idea or at least the concept of this radio. Let's see how it goes.

@@OH8STN I address later in my comment. But short of it is, it's possible to have a SDR radio with an embedded ARM computer as well. It's already been done outside Ham radio. Quite frankly I don't want a 100w radio if I'm not going to use it for digital. It's ultimately useless to me, and wastes power.I also hate when people transmt digital WAYYY above 20w and overload my receiver. What I want is a single integrated unit so I don't have to carry a ton of gear for communication, in a grid down situation you need to carry more than just a radio if you have to leave your qth. If you can have one self contained unit and just carry extra power and antenna you have more space for essentials. I highly doubt you'll make it far with a 50lb go kit just for radio not even taking into account everything else you'll need, it's just not realistic. Same vein as lugging out a massive generator and thinking you're set. I get people like their toys. But it's simply not realistic. I have no doubt a arm computer and soundcard can be integrated into a radio. Modern 64 bit arm professors are up to the task. Just keep them properly cooled, and shield it and isolate it properly. Same with a soundcard. Proper shielding and isolation. Though here's a thought the soundcard and arm professor can be integrated in the same unit/ board, essentially an internal sound card on a computer. Since it only needs to run digital modes there's no issue with using a soundcard. And it cuts back on seperate boards in the system simplifying it. With a full computer embedded in the radio with a built in high quality audio interface there would be no need for a seperate sound card as it's all in the same board. And the idea isn't crazy. There are already software defined radios with embedded ARM computers (off the top of my head Ettus Research E series (E310, E312, E320) and Epiq solutions Matchstiq radios. Though they are test equipment not ham radio. They are barely a few hundred mW and aren't pre programmed so it's not putting up an antenna and turning it on, the actual radio logic has to be programmed in to make it work. Hence test equipment) It's then a matter of implementing for ham radio equipment, which is completely within the realm of possibility.

If you feel 10-20 watts is perfect for your digital activity, this 5-10 watts radio might not quite be up to the task. We don't know yet how it will handle max output at high duty cycle. It might be fine or it might be necessary to reduce power significantly.

The lack of a tuner is no deal breaker, considering the digital and audio capabilities (digital digital digital) of the IC-705, not to mention 2m and 70cm (think SOTA, POTA, VHF-UHF contests, etc.), the mysterious D-star, and the power flexibility. Heck, grab an Elecraft T1 ATU, or, the obvious, use an antenna that is tuned or one with low SWR across many bands. And, by golly, it's like a front end clone of my IC-7300.

I am an FT-818 owner, thinking about upgrading... What I like the most is that they seem to care about VHF/UHF too. HF rig + FM handheld is not the way, I want SSB on VHF, I do it a lot! It's a shame for all rigmakers except Yaesu that they don't offer anything for VHF SSB work. Until now. And, it's a shame for Yaesu that their FT-818's VHF is crippled down. It lacks not just filters, but almost all features the rig offers for HF, such as ATT, preamp, etc. Until IC-705, this was nearly the only way to do VHF SSB on portables. I'd even buy a mobile/portable dualbander, if it had SSB, however, there aren't any, all do FM or FM+digi only, assuming that repeaters are the only thing worth of doing on VHF... And they finally are, since nobody has SSB radios. I hope IC-705 will change that.

Thanks for your insights. My only HF experience is my 200 milliWatt WSPRLite on 20m and 40m, and as a step up, this radio looks "just barely good enough" while being "just barely affordable enough". And my backyard antennas are "all resonant, all the time", so lack of an ATU is no problem. A question for QRP/field/rugged use: although not as popular, would a threaded (TNC) connector be considered more reliable/durable than a BNC connector?

okay, no tuner. 1) most internal tuners can't handle extreme ( >3:1) swr anyway sooooo... external ends up being used. Wild swr can happen easily depending how the antenna is deployed (height, rain, nearby stuff, etc.) even if it was resonant when you packed it in the kit. 2) the small package with internal tuner might have heat-dissipation issues. 3) I bet portable operators already have an external tuner in their kit. 4) External tuner can be optional (and therefore left home) if you know the antenna is truly ready-to-rock. Personally, I go with the manual tuner as it saves a drop or two of those precious mAh's and can have better coverage at times. 73 -Rob

Nice rational video. It’s interesting people are hating on Icom mainly for the delay but we do have a global pandemic and supply chain issues and it’s hardly reasonable to blame Icom for that. My biggest gripe with the Japanese radio brands is a general lack of innovation. The Yeasu 818 is a perfect example. It’s an almost useless refresh on an ancient radio. At least Icom has taken a bold step and completely shamed the competition. We all have to remember these are low volume products with relatively high R&D and manufacturing costs.

Got my call sign this week and delighted to find your channel dedicated to my intended applications; just joined as a patron. Thank you! Please pardon a rookie question while looking for my first HF rig. The 705 has band capabilities like a combined 7300/9700 but with field applications they could not mimic. It appears their primary advantage is 100W power and some additional UI hardware. For maximum DX I might use an amplifier with those larger base stations anyway. If so, what disadvantage would I find with my home base station being the 705 plus an amplifier?

So here is a question that I have not heard asked yet; To save weight for back packing do you think you will be able to you leave the included battery out of it, and bring a small LiFEPO4 battery pack in the field to power it with that would be lighter to carry and have more amp power to run it? Or would you have to have the included battery in it regardless of the external battery pack?
@OH8STN

Great question. Lets answer it with experience from the 817nd. My 817nd is also used with an external battery pack. Even so, Its internal batteries are always installed. This is so there's always a backup power source. It's okay when on tour with the fat bike since weight isn't bug issue. When hiking or theres a need for counting ounces or grams, occasionally the internal pack has been left at home, in favour of an 4S LiFePO4 pack, or 3s Li-ion to power it. So I think you make an excellent point. 👍👍👍

Icom listen to peoples comments, mind you a big DSP gets put on them, but Icom will never be unthankful for peoples passion. Nor do they pay for it. Ive heard all the comments, with radios like the 7000, the 910H, the 7200 and many many more. The reason why there is no tuner, is that it is trying to be held at a price point, and there are so many types of field tuners you can use, why bother. The biggest thing is to keep the cost as competitive as you can The biggest issue with review radios is getting them back !! Not hating, I just think the price will be more than I'm willing to pay for any portable rig period. I'm still a very basic operator and probably will be until I start playing with digital modes etc..The extra features are sweet but I'm still having fun with my FT-818 and I can do everything I want with it the way I currently operate on HF and VHF/UHF SSB, a reason the IC-705 is also interesting to me. I also suspect I could buy two 818 rigs or Xiegus for the price of the IC-705 if preliminary pricing is still true. I just personally don't budget much money to my radio hobby. I do think for the money it should have an ATU but I agree it's not a deal breaker as I have a couple portable tuners (manual and auto) that I could use if I didn't have a resonant antenna or if a resonant antenna I carried failed. That's the beauty of the hobby many options for many different operators. I will say this delay could be bad for Icom as it buys time for the other manufacturers to get something together as Icom presented this month's ago and it will likely be several more months before it hits the market. Regardless I hope that everyone that buys the IC-705 enjoys it and is willing to have a QSO with a lowly 818 operator if they hear me calling. Cheers and stay safe everyone.

Is the battery lifetime usable on the Icom? Big screen might draw a lot of power, and a battery from a HT? I have an 817, and the internal battery is just about useless, to that I have the T1 tuner from Elecraft, an external battery and a solar panel, I do not use a charge controller, since they all cause RFI, I just keep an eye on the voltmeter and disconnects if it gets too high. My biggest complaint is that it's only 10w. I completely understand 5w on battery. While they could have done 10w, 5w makes sense. However, if I can hook it up to external power, I should be able to do more than 10w. Ideally, I'd like to hook it to a battery and get 50w, but given how much they packed into a small package, that might overheat it. Either way, I would think that they could have gotten 20w out of it. I'll be watching this, and whatever the competition comes up with. I'll have my general ticket soon (hopefully) and can't operate from home right now, so this and a Chameleon MPAS are probably going to be my setup for a while.

It's a fair point. More power is always a good thing, but often physics gets in the way. All of these portable radios on the market have problems overheating, with High Duty Cycles and higher power. When I go portable I just want to make contacts with less effort with limited time. If you need a tuner the MFJ-939Y is supposed to work really well with the 891 and should come with a cable for to connect to the radio, it’s probably one of the best compact auto tuners out there and way better than LDG, I have researched a lot on tuners and the MFJ-939 is the one I’m going to get. The LDG tuners don’t integrate with the radios so well either. The Noise reduction on the 891 is great and much better than the 7300, the 891 would also make a great base radio. Next is the battery in the 705, there's no reason with today's Lithium battery tech that Icom couldn't include a proper 12v battery for the full 10 watts of power, why have a 10 watt radio that limits to 5 watts ? this is a bit insane. The Xiegu X5105 has a good internal tuner and proper 12v battery that can power it for many hrs and it fits into the small pouch of a Tecsun PL-660, that's a truly compact little radio. The Xiegu G90 has a good tuner too, 20 watts, needs external battery but if you want 10 watts output from the 705 you need an external power source too. I know you said you have had issues with the CE-19 interface but I use it with the G90 and X5105 all the time on JS8 with no issues, even some PSK 31. The CE-19 interface is very compact. If I go portable then usually I'm bringing the FT-891, 100 watts makes all the difference, the Mp1 is a great very compact antenna that just works. For Digital the G90 is my favourite radio, 20 watts really helps, I run it on battery in my sitting room while my XYL is reading or watching TV. My EFHW is great except when I need bands it's not resonant on, this is where the G90 excellent tuner really shines or when I want to work the phone portion of 80m I can hit the tune button and bang, I'm on the air, the EFHW has a coil for 80m so bandwidth is very narrow but it's tuned for the CW portion, I need the Tuner for the Phone part of the band. If I'm tuning around and I hear someone on 17m my EFHW is not resonant on that band, with the G90 and my X5105, no problem, hit tune and bang, I'm on the band, not efficiently but I'm on it making contacts. Won't be able to do that with the 705 sadly. For ultra compact and lightness I take the X5105. It's really convenient taking it on the plane. The 705 has some interesting features, the USB interface, charging via USB but will it operate the radio via USB, USB C ? Bluetooth is another cool feature, using a bluetooth headset ? I use bluetooth headset with I operate the IC-7300 remotely. This is very handy and means less clutter of wires. Control the radio from phone maybe ? or software on the Laptop ? The 705 is the most interesting radio to come out in years for sure but, I can't justify the cost compared to a Xiegu G90 especially if I have to have external battery, I may as well have a radio that can output 20W or 100W if I take the FT-891 with the same battery. + it will allow me work my EFHW on non resonant bands. I can have the G90 and FT-891 and still have change left over :-) Still, I'd like a 705 to play with :-)

Maybe the FT-991A is something that must be compared to the IC-705, specially when looking at the price.

@@mbarreto64 Can the FT-991A TX on 4m(EU version of IC-705 is supposed to ship with this) band? It has a smaller touch screen? It's more bulky, less portable? No internal power. It's a given that the 705 does not have an internal ATU. The 705 also has D-Star. Not sure they are comparable. The 705 is more like a challenge to Yeasu over their poor effort with a successor to the FT-817ND. The FT-818 was a huge disappointment. I love my 817 and have ordered a 705. It may be expensive but it ticks a hell of a lot of boxes. M7ARQ 73.

@@marcfeakins1158 , It is as you say relative to features. Depends on what one wants. The price is almost the same, the 705 has 10x less power and doesn't have Fusion and no reception on uhf PMR and vhf marine bands. The 705 has 4m, and better water fall spectrum scope and also a better user interface. I would like to have both but if I buy only one I am leaning toward the ft-991a. FT817 is not an option as ic-7100 is not too.

I have had a deposit on one since Aug 2019 I'm looking for an AIO(All In One) Flexible Radio, primarily for Digi Modes. I have a X5105, I have had a FDM-DUO, KX3 and FT817... Why would I compare them, 705 is different technology/concept/feature set.

I don't think there's enough known yet to make a final decision on whether or not I want a IC-705. I just looked at the pre-release brochure. I have mixed feelings about the spectrum display and touch screen. How will it handle digital modes? Does it have a built in sound card or does it need a signalink or similar sound card device interface. Elecraft has a well established path to go QRO and make the KX transceivers a dual purpose home station or highly portable package and offers a bit more power. When you finish accessorizing the 705 is it really any less expensive? Maybe when the rig is actually available it will be easier to compare the pros and cons. Maybe after Elecraft delivers the K4 there will be a Kx4 in the works...

The entire point of this radio is being all in one. The only thing it's lacking is the tuner, which I won't be using anyway. Unlike Elecraft, there is no accessorizing required for this radio. The internal sound card is built in, so no wire mess for data. So it likely will work exactly like the 7300 for data modes. Using the internal battery, elecraft KX series outputs 5 watts, just like the ic-705. I'm also curious how the screen is going to work out, and how much current it draws. Other than these I don't really have big concerns. I have no interest in operating qro with this radio. I preferably operating QRO with a separate rig. Anyway, I don't think there's enough information to dismiss this radio just yet. My first IC-705 video kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZpjbZHqBe896obM

@@OH8STN Either I missed it or it wasn't in the brochure. A built-in sound card is indeed a plus and an external tuner doesn't have to be a big deal at qrp. I'm not dismissing it or embracing it quite yet. It would be nice to have something that worked qrp and could interface with a 50-100 watt amp for mobile or base use. I guess we'll know more when it's available for sale and in the field. It does appear to be raising the qrp bar.

I find most internal tuners not that great. You need an almost resonant antenna to use them. With the 7300 anything over 3 or 4 to one and forget it. I'd prefer to get either an MFJ, or LDG external tuner , or a manual tuner. So I would not let that factor into my buying criteria. Last radio I had that had a matching tuner that really worked that way was my Yaesu FT757GXII. That sucker would tune a wet noodle. Resonant is so much better. Not to say all my antennas are perfect, as they are not! But at least I can get a tune for the band i want. I've had the KX2 and I loved it. I hate myself for selling it! But if I were to replace it, based on the cost to get one here in Canada, chances are the 705 price would not be much more based on what I've heard. By the time I got the radio here paid the fees and taxes, it was over $2000, And I agree, that if the radio is meant to use voice , you should not have to pay $50 more for the privilege to use it!

Elecraft are great radios but like Kenwoods, they are overpriced. They are also behind the times. I especially don't like that basics for EVERY OTHER COMPANY are not included with Elecraft radios. They're quality isn't any more than the Japanese brands. Being Japanese made is quality enough in my book. I love Icom, Yaesu, and Alinco, but in the past several years Icom has shined in most areas, except for some issues like the screens that die in extended UV exposure and other minor issues. Man do I love the menu structure of an Icom, so intuitive, unlike Yaesu... I own many brands by the way, including a most listed above. If anyone is handing any of them out for free, I will take any of them in a heartbeat! ;-) Great video as usual Julian.

Other manufacturers are delayed too. Engineering design doesn't spring from nowhere, it takes people and facilites. Production needs a supply chain for components. All is disrupted at the moment. Disppointing its delayed, but don't expect Yaesu or anyone to magic up a competitor and "get the jump" on Icom. For a resonant antenna the end-connected OCFD existed for years, but people still struggle with fan dipoles and bitch about no tuner?

"Waahh, there's no tuner!" Z11pro 2's are cheap. Get that. :) Also, I'm loving that they included USB charging, it's something I wish everything had, including laptops. Sure it would take ages to charge a laptop with USB, but sometimes that's perfectly fine, like if you're driving and you don't want to have an inverter charging stuff.

@OH8STN

If you've watched any of my field videos you already know, managing condensation is something we all have to do individually. I'm sure I've even written a blog post or two on this topic. As far as APRS, I don't really miss it. I'm using HFAPRS through JS8Call, because APRS coverage on VHF is so bad anyway. The other features are much more important to me.

@@OH8STN OH8STN Ham Radio I have watch some off your videos, not all of them, there are nice and informative. I think that is one thing if you lose an G90(450euros) due to a rain or an Icom 705 (1450euro). I am expecting that for that money and all those portable features to have some IP protection. And if they manage to integrate Wifi stack and GPS receiver is build in, some APRS shouldn't be a problem. I have an Kenwood THD72 and it has IP54, with 3 battery I did 2 hiking trails in the summer 2019. Each of them wore one week long and wore on mountains of Romania with bad to none GSM coverage, but with APRS and some VHF/UHF repeaters coverage. I managed to activate in SOTA program 7-8 summits(4 simplex QSO), to send my position to APRS, to send messages home that we are ok and also to request and receive weather update for the next 12/24 hours twice per day. I use this station also in winter on light snow, even in light rain. Is not submersible like Yaesu FT1XDE, but I have some trust. Also I can use the menu, with gloves on harsh winds and even on blizzard. But as my tent has only 1,8Kg and my backpack is going above 20Kg, because I might climb 2000m per day, so we are with different needs and expectations. Anyway thanks for the multiples reviews and information that you put here and your blog.
