Wow the CK 38 with the Living Waters strings sounded excellent 😊.

Thank you from the future, I know it was a few years ago but I'm currently looking at a CK-38 as I have a TK-39 and wondered what the differences are. Nice to hear this and see both the 38 and 39. Sold!

I love that Martin.... Ohana really makes a nice instrument too. Oh, and your playing is cool too. Nice video.

Hey Roxie thanks for the review. I think i love the sound off the 38 the most. Also the colour. But thats just my taste. Greetings from The Netherlands.

I know this is a video on the 39, but the comment section is littered with people talking about just getting a Martin. I own a vintage Martin Style 0 and the Ohana sk-38. And I’m extremely happy with both. The sk-38 is lighter, more resonant, and has a lot more sustain. The Martin has more oomf in sound though for sure. They both have a sound of their own that I’d gladly play for specific songs. Even every single Martin regardless of their model or of same model will sound different from one another. The neck on the sk-38 is also narrower but wider in height- like a U shape vs D shape in the Style 0. The Ohana also feels a lot more balanced if you hold the ukulele around the heel. The Martin is slightly headstock heavy. Extremely pleased with how Mim sets up the Ohana. If you don’t know her, google her. Such low action and is such a joy to play. My Martin’s setup is a bit higher in the bridge- but it scares me to have the saddle worked on because there’s a finish all over the bridge that goes onto the saddle too. And separating the saddle could result in chipping the finish as well. As far as care go, Extra careful with the Martin vs me being careful with the Ohana. The Martin for sure wants more attention in terms of humidity levels and temps because of its old lacquered finish that’s prone to checking/ cracking. The Ohana is a lot more forgiving since it has a satin finish.

Thank you so much for this video. Nothing will ever compare to the original Martin, but I am so happy there is going to be a cheaper alternative as I am not rich!!

Thanks for this vid. Most informative. I was lucky enough to pick up a 40's Martin 3k for $2200 Aud last week after some haggling. I want to compare the Ohana so also got a very good deal on a CK3 at half your retail quoted (i assume as they have been out a few years). I know its not the Soprano but concert is my fave size. Will be good to do a comparison. Also waiting on a 20's style 0 thats scratched and dented but allegedly no cracks also cheap imho under $1k. Used superannuation money as my own SMSF in hope some antique/vintage instruments appreciate whilst i get the opportunity to play them 🤭😎

Roxie, thank you for the great review, should I buy the vintage series Ohana sk 39 sk390 ck 39, or should I buy the new Mexican made Martin's? Seems like you get more for your money with the Ohanas, what do you think?
@garydg297 жыл бұрын
Good review, I love Ohana's as starter and even intermediate ukes -- I think there's no better value uke around. As for the Martin/Ohana comparison, prices for pre-32 Martins still are not particularly high (you likely can buy a 1M soprano in very good condition for $5-650) and I don't think that any contemporary uke in that price range compares in craft, wood or sound. But then again, if you're hung up on new instruments, then this Ohana probably is a very good buy. When pricing instruments you might consider where they're made, Ohana's are made in China I believe and Martins in the US. Not saying I would buy a $3,000 Martin remake of the model 3, but it may be relevant to some folks. Keep up the good work RM! And if you want to buy a 20's 1M soprano let me know, I have one too many. g2

I have both, SK39 sounds more like 1920's swing. It's the last one she plays in the video. If I had to give up one it would be the CK. I love them both, but if you want more of the 1920's/Roy Smeck kind of sound go with the SK.

Very thorough, intelligent review. Do you think the 39 models are a "big" step up from the 38s?

They are mostly about the same instrument with the main difference being the design and visual differences.

Roxie, Are you now sponsored or a representative of Ohana? After watching the NAMM videos, it seemed to be so. If so, that's awesome! You and Ken are a great resource for comparing and learning about Ohana. If not, Ohana should consider making you an offer you cant refuse! LOL!
