Remember that Gon from the beginning never blinked at death. He didn't care about anyone who was dying in the Hunter exam except those that he cared for, he was completely unbothered by Killua being an assassin and ripping someone's heart out. It's not that Gon was just a good little boy that descended into darkness over time. It's more that he always had a very skewed sense of morality, and over time he was put in situations where that manifested itself in more and more jarrying ways.
@SleepyCity00014 жыл бұрын
Yeah but that is also true for the majority of characters in anime. None of the other characters cared that the character died in that scene either. And to be honest, it would make sense for them not to care wouldnt it? The guy that Killua murdered was a serial killer who had killed many people, and his goal was to kill Killua too. So, it isn't suprising that Gon or the other characters didn't feel a lot of empathy or sadness in this scene. In reality, most people would be traumatized but anime isn't reality. Characters die all the time in front of peoples eyes in anime but no one is ever traumatized by it because that's just how it is in these shows. It isn't supposed to reflect reality and Gon isn't special in this case. So I don't think that shows he doesn't blink at death. There are many scenes that showcase how angry Gon gets when people kill others for no reason. Think of the time when the phantom troupe captures Gon and Killua. Gon beats Nobunga in an arm wrestle when he gets an overwhelming sense of anger when he realizes that Nobunga does have empathy but still kills people who have never done anything to him. He showcases this type of anger multiple times through HxH. To me this shows that he does think it is ethically wrong to kill others if they have never done anything to harm you, and becomes so passionate about that he has even risked the safety of his own life to fight for this personal belief that he showcases. And this is about random people he doesn't know whatsoever. I get what you're saying about how Gon didn't care about anyone who died during the hunter exam. But that is true for literally every other character too. None of the characters from my memory cared when anyone died. So that would either mean that everyone has a skewed sense of morality or that this is just typical for anime. Background characters lives do not matter much for the plot so their deaths don't either
@TurrettiniPizza4 жыл бұрын
JANthebadass No Gon is clearly different. Everyone else was shook when Killua ripped that guy’s heart out. And the story goes out of its way to emphasize Gon’s amorality. (For example, the scene where the appraiser appraised Gon.)

@@Stariiberry Two points. (1) When he heard that Killua and his family were assassins he was totally unmoved by it which even Killua thought was weird. So that alone proves my point. (2) There's a difference between knowing someone is an assassin and witnessing them rip someone's heart out. A normal person would still be shaken by that. Everyone knows Hitler was a mass murderer, but if a normal person witnessed him actually kill someone then they would be disturbed by it. Having prior knowledge that he's a mass murderer doesn't change that. Gon just isn't normal.

Great analysis. "Too bad" Gon had such an idyllic childhood before being thrown into the horrifying world of hunters. Killua, Kurapika and even Leorio were already exposed to many horrors of varying levels and had a chance to either make it or break before we see them in HxH (and so far they had "made it", so the additional horrors in the series had less of a negative impact - not none. they are not unscathed. just less, because they already figured out how to survive a lot). Sadly Gon was just progressively destroyed having developed no prior coping mechanisms to withstand the constant impact of the "real world". I agree with the importance of Hisoka on Gon and the parallels that can be drawn. I also see Hisoka as Gon's safety net and shield. I know.... sounds strange... and I don't think Hisoka deliberately acts as his safety net, but inadvertently or by circumstance (and sometimes "deliberately" but for his own self serving reasons), Hisoka's presence has ALWAYS guided and protected Gon. Think about it. In every single arc (I guess except the short Zoldyck family arc), Gon is faced with life threatening or potentially maiming moments and Hisoka has had a direct role in preventing that outcome. He helps Gon pass the hunter exam. He wards off Gon from entering level 200 in Heaven's arena until he learns Nen so Gon can protect himself. He disrupts the Spiders in the Yorknew arc. He helps Gon win the dodgeball game on Greed Island (based on Gon's personality, we all know Gon probably would have taken repeated head shots from Razor's ball trying to catch it until he died or got brain damage lol if no one stronger was there to help him do it in a safer manner). He deliberately provokes Illumi in the Chariman Election Arc so that immense aura would be released warning Killua of his presence (which helps Killua accomplish saving Gon)........ interestingly.... the only large arc that Hisoka does not show up in at all is the Chimera Ant Arc. And it is there that we see Gon get utterly and tragically destroyed.

Gon was just a child who wasn’t ready for the world. Gon had never seen one of his friends die so he ended up becoming a hypocrite because slowly his morals started to go away due to the real world affecting him and kite’s death. Gon had lost his way and was willing to give up everything for his friend even if it meant his life in a process so maybe in a way he gave everything up in hopes he might get to see kite again soon. To me in a way gon shows what would happen to a child who’d been sheltered all their life and you put them in the real world slowly they’ll become a different person. The creator of hxh just shows what would happens to most people as they experience real life problems they change.

like this video but I wouldn’t say gon has a moral decline since he was never really moral at all even though he does care about his friends and is a nice boy, his reactions in the hunter exam arc show that he’s pretty insensitive to death of people he doesn’t know. I don’t feel like gon slowly loses humanity, his transformation during the CA arc is to me a result of him bottling up all of his emotions and guilt and his non existent sense of self worth (probably due to ging abandoning him). Gon is still a kid and sees his role model die in front of him and thinks it’s his fault. He feels so guilty that he tries to KILL HIMSELF during his fight with pitou! When he says « you can go to sleep too » he could probably be talking about himself and not kite. This guilt proves that he doesn’t lose humanity, he just feels extreme emotions (both anger towards pitou and guilt) because no one is here to snap him out of it, not the adults from the mission nor killua who’s too afraid of hurting gon to stop him before it’s too late. Even after he’s saved one of the first things he says to ging is « i should be the one who’s dead » so he still feels extremely guilty. Sorry for rambling i just have a lot of feelings about gon!
@xianchen19354 жыл бұрын
Yeah I agree, I think he still has a lot of growing to do in the future, and I hope he'll realize what it really means to kill. What stuck to me a lot was the line "I don't care about beings that call each other garbage" when Gon had his 'first kill', he's still growing and a child, he isn't being inhumane, but hasn't deeply thought about it yet. Kite then thought "That's a very dangerous view", which foreshadows Gons insensitivity to living beings and that he'll probably make a inhumane mistake in near future, but I wouldn't characterize him for that act as inhumane, but rather rising and falling, like the dud said those are those many stones on the path to his growth

Well, I feel like Hunter x Hunter will naturally shift more to Kurapika like it has done for the current arc, since he already was the main protagonist of intrigue arcs, and he still has the Spiders to deal with to finish his narrative arc. It could very well become a series mostly starring the Zodiacs in the big roles at this point, considering 4th protag/background character Leorio is there too. That is, if we ever even get through the Succession Crisis Arc.

it definitely will for the next 1-3 arcs but i think togashi has already revealed the final villain(gyro) and that gon and him are going to be involved with each other. The zodiacs, leorio, and kurapika will all be more involved in the newer & final arcs probably. If anything yea, kurapika is going to get his revenge and they’ll explore the dark continent first, but i feel like there’ll be a timeskip to when gon is completely recovered and has newfound humanity & abilities. Joseph Maseko oh It’s set in 2100. In the year 2000 creatures known as draugr’s wiped out half the earths population. They wiped out humans recourses for tech. Humanity with no law, no order, and no leaders went into chaos and darkness as they murdered each other for years and years. This went on until 4 individuals gathered together and tried to create one government where humans stand together as one. But they realized they each had different visions for the planet. So they divided one side of earth into 4 factions. The Moirai who believe matriarchy is the best way to peace. The Kanonas who believe plutocracy is the best way to peace. The Eleftheros who believe anarchy is the best way too peace. And the Isotia who believe democracy is the best way to peace.
@YourHolyOrders94 жыл бұрын
Joseph Maseko The other side of the planet is called the mainland which isn’t inhabited by humans it’s inhabitants are creatures (not dragur’s) but that’s an arc for the second half of the story. My main character Sorli Eureka is the focus for the first half of the story. He’s lived in the black graveyard which is in between the 4 factions so it’s basically a death battlefield for them. So he grew up there. And he is adopted by a woman named Rhamnusia. She trains him to be an assassin with deadly fighting skills. Rhamnusia knows sorli’s mother is in the Mainland He doesn’t remember his mother so when he grows up his mission will be to find his mother and that’s the first half of the entire story. But there’s a twist in the end tho about his mother. And he’s not a regular mc at all. Like I said he’s a mix between Kaneki, Eren, and Gon. Pretty dark. But not evil.
@YourHolyOrders94 жыл бұрын
Joseph Maseko and he’s joined by a girl named Riza, and a chemera alien named Armel. They are friends. Greed Island is a setting. The hunter exam, and it's various locations are the setting. None of them take place in a city that needs to be developed. That genuinely might be the shittiest point of contention towards HxH I've ever heard. The cities don't feel different? There's only one city setting in the entire series... World Building is about so much more than location, it's about magic systems, it's about histories, it's about the rules that make the world, and HxH is a master class of this, and world Building in general.

@@slevinchannel7589 and your point on showing us, "normal people" is also ridiculous. No story shows us normal people. The point of fiction is to show is unnatural people who struggle with natural issues. "Normal" people are boring. Killua's struggle with his identity and finding a place he belongs is something anyone can relate to. But because he's little kid assassin prodigy, he's interesting. Kurapika's struggle with revenge is a natural human struggle, but because of the unnatural situations surrounding him, that's why he's interesting to watch. Meruem's growth from infant to mature being is something everyone deals with, but if he wasn't a chimera ant, he wouldn't have been able to achieve this growth over the course of a single arc.

Great analysis! One character trait that I think is absolutely vital to Gon that I believe is missing is a more subtle one. He has a bottomless pit of faith, in his friends and in life itself, and his faith is so deep that he has no fear. I think that detail is what makes him a true diamond and what makes him so dazzling. Edit: changed a word so my metaphor was more consistent.
@Julia-sw9xs4 жыл бұрын
Great analysis! I really liked the take on Gon's morality and his parallels with Hisoka. I disagree about Gon losing his humanity, though. The arc makes it very clear that humanity is capable of terrible acts, so his final sacrifice being so horrible doesn't really mean that he has lost it. Take Meruem, for example, a character that is clearly shown to "gain" humanity. When he's born, he's an all powerful being, with a clear purpose, will and strength that aren't questioned by him - in the beginning, there's no point of identification between his journey and the human experience. His path to humanization mostly begins when he starts second guessing himself. Gon does have moments where he feels "inhuman", but these happen when he's able to completely shed aside his emotions and questions to pursue a goal. We see this in the hunter exam, when he hunts Hisoka, and when he waits for Pitou to heal Komugi. In these moments, I feel he's (mostly) without moral and emotion, and doesn't question or care if his opponent is killing or healing someone else. I think this is what Meleoron saw in Gon that wasn't entirely human. In the final confrontation with Pitou, all the emotions he had repressed come back to him - he can't run from his humanity forever, just as Pouf couldn't hide Komugi from Meruem.

It is safe to say that Gon is the most realistic shounen character ever. This is what would truly happen to a child who already possess sociopathic traits, from the leaving of his home to pursue his own goal, to taking brutal punishment and pain just to show off that he can do things HIS way, and to the point of not caring about hurting his friends as long as he gets the job done in his own viewpoint (Gon and Killua during the dodgeball game). Overall it just shows that morality between good and evil isn't just a one dimensional line, its multiple lines that shoot towards different points that end off where good comes and evil enters. The Chimera ants were not evil, that is just who they were, they seek out homes to multiply and grow stronger just as the Humans do.

I love his character arc so much. It shows the darker side of humanity, and how easy it is to let go of your morals once you've hit your breaking point. I think that’s the intent, but I never want to speak absolutely.

Yeah. It was Netero that made it so deadly. They're not supposed to be that way normally. Netero is kind of a psycho.

Gon did threaten to kill Meleoron (the chameleon Chimera ant) if he ever betrayed him and you can also see in his eyes that Gon is completely serious about it. So it's safe to say that Gon does not care for anyone he isnt close to and he is willing to kill anyone who gets in his way without a second thought.

All 4 protagonists in Hunter x Hunter are representative of experience death in 4 different ways : Killua - a daily occurrence through assassination but never really lost a loved one. Kurapika - Had his entire clan massacred. Leorio - lost a dear friend to a disease. Gon - Never experienced death on Whale Island. Throughout the early parts of the story we see Gon's hypocritical view on death and killing others, criticising the phantom troupe about killing innocents but didn't even bat an eyelid when others fell to their death during the hunter exam. After his first kill, he doesn't even react because of his skewed and selfish view on good and evil - based completely on how useful people are to him. When Kite dies, he experiences his first lost and having not been raised properly(emotionally), he is unable to handle his feelings of rage and revenge, costing him greatly. It is something that could have happened to say Luffy after Ace's death if not for Jimbe (Luffy could have become morbidly depressed instead). To see Gon's character unravel so quickly was SAD but intriguing. Kurapika is on a similar path but has managed to handle his hatred of the Phantom troupe because of his goal to get back the eyes. Having this goal, to some extent, does force Kurapika to control his own emotions and I think there will come a time when Kurapika does unravel completely and well................... Also Gon has to be one of the most selfish characters of all time, rivaling even Griffith.

(Make room, Aleczandxr -- another brilliant Hunter x Hunter video essayist gets a seat at your table!) Ohara, this was a wonderful analysis, and your deep understanding of Gon's character was on full display. The one point I would have added (commenting from 7:40) is to mention that Madhouse left out part of Gon's story in their episode 1. Both chapter 1 of the manga and episode 1 of the 1999 adaptation spend considerable time in a flashback to where Gon was 9. He almost dies, is saved by Kite, and learns that his father is alive and a hunter. Kite gives him Ging's hunter license so that he may return it to him once they meet. Ep.76(2011) has to badly summarize this in like 20 seconds because they had no choice but to finally acknowledge what Togashi wanted us to know from the beginning. At any rate, the age 9 flashback adds a somber element from the very start. Since Madhouse was going for "Son Goku with a fishing pole instead of a tail", this early, non happy-go-lucky incident did not fit with the deceiving tone they wanted to use at the start. To be fair, the tonal arc they did achieve was very good, but I still prefer the beginning as Togashi wrote it.

to be honest, the reason I felt that Gon turned into what he became is due to 2 things. The incredible change in environment, and the loss of friends. Kite was like a father figure to Gon, because even though he had a father, he couldn't even remember his face, and since kite treated Gon like his own son, for Gon to lose kite so quickly after he found someone he could look up to and trust, it took a heavy toll on Gon. For him to be raised in a town where the biggest even happening was catching a big fish, for him to go from that to fighting killer giant ants who eat people, sometimes when they're alive, it's a dramatic change that anyone would have went through. So I think that even though his mental health was declining, it was out of his control.

I also love the parallels between Meruem and gon When gon meets a chimera ant for the first time he crushes him to death but doesn't kill him completely so Kite tells him to go for the head, gon also justifies his action by telling something similar to "someone who sees his teammate as trash dont deserve to live" On the other hand Meruem kills a kid by destroying the head without a second thought At the end of the arc gon's act of revenge is shattering pitou's head and he doesn't even show an anger or pain in his face just an empty eyes devoid of soul Meruem on the other hand learns the value in life and no matter how weak a person is they deserve to live, in his last breath he stays with komugi Its just perfect, I always tear up when see that scene.

One of the reasons I thought Gon wasn't your typical protagonist when during the Hunter Exam, where he had to get Hisoka's tag while he was attacking another participant. A typical Shounen Protagonist/Hero would've tried to save that poor schmuck from getting murdered. Instead, Gon waited until Hisoka was distracted by killing someone to get his numbered tag.

Some of the anime? Well, I’d advise binging the Chimera ant arc heavily once you get there, like 6-20 episodes a day (at least ending on a payoff episode). It’s the best or second best arc for most but it can feel like a drag at points especially the first half (it’s 61 episodes total). Episodes most recommended to watch together consecutively are 84+85, 96-99, 110-112, 115+116, 117+118, 125+126, 129-131, and 135+136 (don’t skip credits for these). I liken Chimera Ant arc to a series of long jokes where the punchline takes a while to reach but is totally worthwhile as long as you’re expecting your expectations to be challenged. Being that the “punchlines” take a while it requires binge-watching so that their “delivery” (=comedic timing) doesn’t fall flat.

My theory for Gon's psychology is that his father absence affected him way more than he could think himself. Dont know if it's obvious, but I think that his absence of morality is a reaction to protect himself from the pain of a gone father. If he had hated his father for that, I think he would have got a morality a bit more similar to killiua, he would have got a deep anger and sadness inside of him, but he would have do what he could for other to not suffer as him and he would have tried to be a better person than his father. But he would have been suffering a lot more, so his reaction was to deny his father horrible action. For that, he had to deny morality, so he could see his father as a good person. But of course this sense of morality can't be applied for only one person, so his whole perception of things is like that. There is no good or bad for him, just people he decided to see as good or bad that he want to protect or not. The thing that made me think of that even more was his reaction when he saw Ging for the first time. He could have cried of joy, of emotion, or he could have his sadness exploding after all this years. It would have shown that even if had hide it, he was affected, sad, and of course a bit angry at his father. But he do not cry for that and do not ask anything about him abandoning him. No, he talks to him about Kite like a friend or something. It shows that he has never seen Ging like a missing dad but like someone who he was playing with. No child could think like that and have a good sense of morality. So I dont think Gon's a monster. I think he's a child who was affected by his dad's absence, even though he doesn't see it. Plus he has to grow way to quickly for a child, obviously especially in the chimera arc, but even since the hunter exam arc, and in every arc expect the last one, if you think of it. (I've only seen the 2011 anime). He is not mature enough to react to all of that with morality.

I see a few comments saying "Gon doesn't know the world, he doesn't understand how it works and what's right and what's wrong" I disagree. I'm pretty sure Gon knows how the world works, he just simply doesn't care. If "right" or "wrong" don't work out for him, he'll just pave his own path. He literally did that the entire show. How do some many people miss that? Gon simply just doesn't care, if it doesn't fit his narrative. If it doesn't bother or impact his narrative, he has no feeling towards it, one way or another. Gon is a Chaotic Neutral Character in the role of the protagonist "Hero". The end.

i feel like a difference between hisoka and gon might've been planted from the very beginning with kite's "forced to take another life" line. we know kite's a very influential figure to gon, and his meeting with kite is pivotal to his character. "no unnecessary deaths" is a big one with gon, but he isn't necessarily against all death, like most hunters it seems. also, agree with the video for the most part except one thing: gon's arc isn't completely "dark" and his state at the end of the ant arc wasn't the end for him. his conversation with ging and then kite after he wakes up again are the crucial concluding scenes for his arc imo (as of now lol, a second might come for him like you said)

Gon gave up because he broke down and honestly that can happen to anyone. Especially a little kid who has no guidance. Gon is such a unique shounen protagonist. Only other protag that I can think of that is unique is probably denji(chainsaw man).

I feel like Gon going full murder mode on Pitou served a similar purpose to Netero's final words to Meruem "Never underestimate humanity's bottomless potential for malice." And that purpose was to hammer home that for just a few moments, the ants weren't the monsters, the humans were. For a moment, the inhuman beings had more humanity than the humans they fought.
@digitalcthulhu1432 жыл бұрын
Bullshit lmao Gon was justified in powering up or else pitou would have killed him, she herself said she had to do it. If you think Gon and Killua would have stood a chance against her without powering up I dunno what to tell you. Seeing how easy it was to kill Kite without powering up Gon and Killua would have surely been killed because pitou was not about to let them walk around to challenge the king or the other guards. At the end of the day it was a necessary sacrifice. The only thing I didn't agree with Gon was threatening to kill Komugi but even keeping her as a hostage wasn't such a bad idea after all since the rest of the squad did the same time and hid her away while Meruem was returning from fighting Netero.
@thechugg4372 Жыл бұрын
@@digitalcthulhu143 You're saying this like Gon had any control over the situation, like he "wanted" to power up or "wanted" to threaten Komugi, he was doing what he always did, he was being straightforward and true.
