It all seems very confusing, steering between this cone and then round that one, how do they explain this on the test. I imagine many people fail at this not because they can't do it but because of getting confused of which cone they are suppose to steer round.

I was confused for a minute until I saw a diagram on the web. You are basically doing an 's' to your right (or left) and then going back to center in reverse the opposite way you got there. Hopefully whomever has to take this test gets clear direction on what they need to do. :)

Hi Ultra Driving School - Thank you for your comment. I've discovered that in doing these videos, that it's always the simplest things that can be the biggest omissions. Yes, when you drive through the box, you then have to go either right or left of the nose cone. The hardest part of that, is back up from the right or left of the nose cone. Fortunately, YT hasn't been able to figure out how to fix the video quality, so I'm going to have to reload the video. If there's anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. Hi Ultra Driving School (Victor) - Thank you for your response and endorsement. And yes, slow-speed manoeuvres are key my friend. I found that these even worked in the commercial class training too. If a driver was having trouble with the mirrors or the clutch, I would get him/here to back up to the trailer for a good portion of the lesson. Also, I found that after a couple of lessons it was good to revisit the slow-speed manoeuvres to refresh and impress upon the student what was important. All the best my friend, Cheers Rick

Been watching your Ohio maneuverability videos, and man have they been a great help to me. My only concern in my situation is that I have to take my drivers test in a few days and a minivan, and with how wide the vehicle is and the tightness of this course makes me a little bit worried. I was horrible at using my mirrors for reversing, but once I figured out how to do this it was so easy for me. It's actually a good thing we have to do this on our test here!

@@smartdrivetest This morning when I was leaving for school, on my street still, the car down the road from me slowed all the way down and basically came to a stop twice and then pulled into a driveway after sitting still on the road for what felt like a minute. I am taking my driving test tmrw in Hamilton OH. This is the second time in my life I'm taking it. Took it was I was 16 and now I'm 38, taking it again to get my license back. Question, during the maneuverability test, how many points do they knock off for looking over your shoulder? I've been in the habit for much of my driving life to look behind my shoulder when backing up. For some reason, it's not always comfortable to always use my side mirrors.

Taking the ohio test tomorrow. Im 28 and HAD a valid drivers license in Nevada ... but it expired in 2016 while I was attending college in Boston and was further complicated when my family moved back to our hometown in Ohio. Now my only option is to take the whole thing again. Im very nervous and a little pissed off about the whole situation... for one because this seems unreasonably complicated compared to every other states driving exam but also because I think its absolutely bonkers that a person who DROVE LEGALLY at one point in the not too distant past (myself) is now being forced into a situation where I could fail and be denied a license. It is really humiliating, especially considering I absolutely KNOW HOW TO DRIVE. Been practicing this past week and also noted your mirror methods. Hoping I pass, its at 2 pm tomorrow at Seven Hills in Hamilton.

Watching this video I’ve taken the maneuverability test twice both in a compact car everyone claims if you take it in a small car you’ll pass but I failed. I plan on taking it soon in an lincoln mkx with the hopes of passing. backing up I always manage to get too close to the first cones fingers crossed!!!

When you do this in Ohio during your drivers test, you actually use regular cones with a long piece of PCV through the hole, that makes the whole thing more difficult as you can’t see them as clearly, my driving school had me practice with the cones you used and I was very thrown off on the actual test.

I just got my permit last Monday July 27th. And I’m planning to take my drivers test in mid to late September, since I’m 20 I know o don’t have to wait 6 months to take it. And my uncle took me to a school parking lot today and showed me this. I did pretty well but I think I should get 5 cones or what my uncle wants to do is get some two liters and put stone in them along with poles to help me out. And tips for me to use before taking this test? I do amazing on driving on the road.

Last Saturday we went to a school parking lot in Antwerp Ohio and he made an imaginary course same set up as the cones for the parallel parking and I did better then he thought I Woolf of. I have been driving with my temps since I was 16 and I’ve passed every single one of my tests for that (4 times), I am 20 going to be 21 in 3/4 months. Used to have a lot of anxiety driving and I pretty much feared it. Almost ended up in an accident from being too anxious. Now I’ve gotten close to enough practice to where I’m comfortable enough even in busier areas. I just keep a distance away from the car in front of me. I know what happens behind me isn’t my problem unless I’m going too slow. My closest BMW said I can come in and take the tests whenever rather than to have it scheduled. So I am going next Wednesday. I was so scared to do maneuverability at first 2 years ago and I messed up my mom’s bumper on her full size SUV. I practiced in that for a long time before switching to a smaller car, so I have experience in both. Even a year ago I had no idea how to maneuver. I didn’t understand how to maneuver or when to turn the wheel. I was so confused where the wheels were turned when just moving in reverse. I didn’t even learn a go-to strategy like this one, but somehow it’s come pretty easy and I taught myself with a lot of practice. I’ll definitely use the tips where the cones should line up and making sure to do a 360° swivel look before I back up, I’ve got to remember that. It’s gotten to the point where maneuverability is kind-of fun to do leisurely. But I’m nervous for the test, being pressured is never fun. So I can’t be too comfortable and I can’t be too unconfident, I like to be in a in between mindset with an open mind. I have 2 questions below though. I always forget little things like lining up the bumpers with the cones when I stop when pulled through the very top cone before reversing, as well as the first 2 cones when finally backing through the box. Is it a must-do to line up with the cones to pass the maneuverability portion? Because my dad told me I would fail if you aren’t exactly aligned. And I was also told to not come to a complete stop or even stop at while going in reverse during the maneuvering. I guess that’s how it was when my parents took theirs 30-40 years ago. I also heard I can’t have my foot on the brake at all driving through. The problem with that is the car will naturally roll forward faster so that can’t be controlled if I can’t brake.

In Ohio, the maneuverability test replaces parallel parking tests, since the movements are basically the same. I took mine in 1987 with a 1977 Caprice Classic. I had a tank while most people did the test with a subcompact. It was a piece of cake, though since I practiced with an F-150 with a full cap on the back. Just keep practicing and remember that stopping during the movements is a failure, so try to move slowly, but smoothly. Sudden corrections cause you to stop, but a smooth correction can save the day.

My drivers test is next month I have the shorter version of it in the parking lot of the dmv. The maneuverability test is the only thing I’m having trouble with. I do good some days and then other days are horrible. When you are reversing out of the cones does your car have to come out angled straight? I don’t hit any cones but sometimes I come out crooked. I thought as long as I went through it without touching any cones I would be good but I wanted to make sure before my test. Thanks!

I've been hearing from family and family friends that parallel parking is no longer required in Ohio. I've also seen multiple articles say it hasn't been a requirement since 2015, but I've seen other sites say it's still a requirement. Which is it??

It's very unlikely that you'll be required to parallel park there in the Buckeye. However, in that 1% of 1% chance that you get the meanest, angriest, craziest driving examiner ever, she or he might get you to parallel park. Otherwise, no. My instructor made it way easier and simpler. Heres the steps he gave me (i did not touch a single cone with his advice). 1. Drive forward till the 2nd row is beside you 2. Half revolution of the wheel and go straight till the front cone is beside you 3. Straightened your car at half a revolition the other way 4. Keep that wheel in the same position and back up until your mirror shows the back of your car is in the middle of the 2 cones 5. Straighten out your wheel and go straight backwards (slowy) for about 3.seconds 6. Half revolution the other way until your car is in line with the front cone 7. Back up for completion

I am 20, I am taking my test next Wednesday. I urgently need to know if I am supposed to have my bumpers lined up with the designated cones right when pulling up before reversing. For example, when I pull forward through the box and the very top front cone is lined up with the rear bumper perfectly, and then when backing all the way through the box with the first 2 cones? I did not take driving school so I am more nervous for this. I do think I’ll pass though. If not, no big deal. I’ll just retake it.

Am I allowed to stop that much? When do I stop? At the door? At the mirrors? At the back of the bumper? At the front of the bumper? I was told you can't stop until you get to the end (forward) and then in reverse, you can't stop until you get back to the beginning.

Rick, I wanted to take the time today and thank you for your knowledge and your work. I do not live in Ohio nor did I have to take the cone test but you still helped me a bunch and gave me some tips on these maneuvers in your video's. I am from Kentucky and I still had the examiner in the car with me. We did parallel parking, turnabout and something called stop on grade parking (parking on a hill) and I almost aced the test! The only thing I did wrong was not use my signal when I pulled away from the curb, I was super super nervous. I took the drivers test last year in December a little bit before Covid started and I failed miserably. My test results from today was completely opposite of last year, I pretty much passed everything! I want to thank you for helping me and to keep me from not giving up. I am little nervous to drive on my own now, do you have any tips for that? I am sure I will get more comfortable driving alone over time. I retake this part on the 6th! I got this and will pass it. I totally forgot that we lose points for stopping 😅and I kept stopping. I didn’t hit any cones but just stoped one too many times 😅

So I'm driving a car I've never drove ( Toyota Camry) and I'm just wondering if all the car steer wheel moves work on every steering wheel? So if I turn 1/2 turn to the left with two different cars and different steer wheels sensitivity will they be in the same place?

It’s better in my opinion when you don’t straighten the wheel when i don’t straighten the wheel it’s a perfect turn backwards and as i turn backwards i slowly straighten the wheel until it lines up with the fronts cone and it’s a straight shot backwards without stopping all i have to do is slowly straighten the wheel out by looking through the mirrors a lot of these videos on youtube make this harder then what it is lol

So, when you say "one revolution", does that mean turn the wheel 360 degrees or just 180? thanks..

Hi froopy070 - Thank you for your query. One revolution is 360° my friend, which when driving crazy is a donut. 180° is a 1/2 revolution and good for a 180 when you want to get away from the bad guys!! ;o) All the best, Cheers Rick

I'm 34 Years old, and just now getting prepared for my driving test!. My first time doing the maneuverability was a couple days ago. I did so so the 1st 2 times and got the hang with it after. In a truck at that. My fear all these years been stopping me from driving. I'm taking my driving test in April.

good luck with practicing & your exam in april. i first took the exam back in november 2022, and passed the driving part, but failed the maneuverability. since i live in ohio, i had to take an online course, but it was fairly easy. i just finished my last maneuverability lesson with my driving instructor yesterday, and i’ve been doing fantastic. i have memerized my turn points, and even how to get myself out of trouble if i mess up. i’m retaking my maneuverability this thursday, and i’m excited. i understand the fear of driving, i used to be like that. i’m surprised i’ve overcome all of that, but just take it slow.

Yes, you can use your brakes. And you have to do it in one fluid motion. Go super slow and stay tight to the driver’s side. Cheers Rick

Hi GmodexGames - Thank you for your query. You can look overt your shoulder my friend; however, you are doing yourself a dis-service. To do other manoeuvres well on your road test--ie. changing lanes and backing--you will be a more skilled driver if you can use your mirrors. When backing up, you say to turn when the pylon is at the rear of "the door." Is this the front door, or the back door on a 4 door car?
