When I was in school, high school that is....cell phones were there but not quite popular. I don't even think the iPhone had been released yet. Anyways, the school policy then was you couldn't use any cell phone under a school roof. Students actually listened to that. Only outside not under roof they could use it.

@@adabong admin usually calls 911 during school shootings. How is being able to reach family during a school shooting going to protect them? It won’t, when a school shooting happens you need to hide or run. Contacting family isn’t going to help. The pros of this far outweigh the cons.

@@nilmerg idk it does have a positive effect but a phone ban isnt going to stop these shootings and will make a school shooting scenario even more terrifying than it already is. there needs to be something done about those shootings first then i would agree with phone bans but right now it seems like everyone could care less about them and are for some reason more focused on phones and dress codes which is insane.

My students this year were required to put them in a basket that set on my desk during class. I would have to watch them like a hawk to make sure that they all put their phones in the basket, because some always tried to slip through. One kid who is definitely addicted to his phone, because tutoring staff have noticed it as well, put his phone in the basket. He sat 3 ft from me. At the end of class, instead of rushing to pull out his phone, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a second phone...🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

But he also has two laptops- one to keep open for information searches and the second one for typing up whatever homework he's supposed to be doing. He refuses to believe that he can do anything without backing himself up with internet searches, etc. It's really quite sad. He's not involved in anything illegal, because he's living at the school and they have kids locked up and occupied until bedtime every night. People at the resource center have commented on how, when he is separated from his phone buy a few feet, he comments and obsesses over it. The phone is on a shelf 15 ft away, and he gets upset about not being able to reach it.

It's amazing that, on one hand, these politicians can preach all about parental choice, but as soon as an issue comes up that THEY don't agree with, the parental rights go out the window, and it's not just with the phones! They want parents involved ONLY until they start asking too many questions, then they start removing them from school board meetings for being "disruptive"

Not entirely true, times change. That’s like saying, because your generation only rode horses, people can still get away with that today. Or since people didn’t have the internet, nobody needs it in this modern age. Sure, you don’t need a cell phone in class, or even in general, but your friends are going to ask for your number so that they can call or text you after school, many prefer texting. You’ll be like a social pariah without a phone when you can’t text any of your friends. Plus phones aren’t all bad. With smartphones, you can use them to measure things, to take photos, have a flashlight, call the cops, text your family, ask ChatGPT-4o to explain a concept you don’t get, etc. It’s about how you use phones. Families could restrict the phone to only use apps that are beneficial and no distracting apps or something. Or have beneficial apps only on weekdays but all apps on weekends.

Agreed, then we could get real answers instead of just yes or no. A student could elaborate and say something like "at first it was hard for me to focus because I missed my phone, but as I got used to not having my phone in constant reach I was better able to focus on my classwork and socialize with the people around me." Or "it has been a difficult transition but I do see an impact on my grades." Or anything more sibstantive than "yes my mental health has improved." I want to know how! @@SuperNova-mp5zp Really goes down to what you care about the most, I'd say. If you want to put restraints on teachers first and foremost, leave kids their phones. But don't complain about education standards going down. I'm a teacher and I've taught in China (where phones get taken away) and in Canada (where they don't). Huge difference. I'm not even totally against it, as I see its use in the classroom, but it's near impossible to control, because they are addicted to it and *will* pull it out even when they could lose points for it (an addiction is just that, they themselves can't control it). It's basically setting up kids for failure rather than success. Better to just ban it, imo. The rest can be resolved in other ways. There were cameras in my classrooms in China, for instance. That should be enough to restrain teacher misbehavior.

I believe this ban is also good because it allows students to actually socialize at lunch and throughout the school day instead of just on their phone all the time. Besides it actually allows for genuine, meaningful conversation to be produced Braden student using their phone, pulling up some random stuff and do it just for the sake of doing it. In addition to this. This can actually improve friendship at school and potentially solve some school relationship problems.

They need a school mode put on the phones, then it won't get the notifications, or be able to do anything other than call 911, and track their locations. We need a GPS on kids because of people who have made bad choices, and taken children from school. So we need a GPS to be alerted that the kid is away from school, and where they are.

I'm not against kids not having phones at school but with the rise of technology in the classroom, I'm not sure how this works. My daughter is entering 11th grade and she can't even turn in an English paper without writing it in google docs and submitting it through Teams. She uses the Teams app to contact her teachers and uses the school's app to check on her grades and make sure her assignments are up to date and what's due that day. They use phones for research. I'm really curious if this school just doesn't require the kids to do and turn in work online or if they provide computers for each student (but isn't that just as bad?). My daughter's school does not provide computers to each student so you either provide your own or use your phone. In my experience, I don't see how this would work when technology is required to complete your classwork.

@@armaanchowdhury1690yeah, I feel the people arguing to ban tech from the classroom (aka people in the 90s survived without phones) are kind of missing the point. The school system also needs to modernize, teaching doesn't necessarily have to happen the way it always has - if phones that were "healthy" were allowed the act of using phones in the classroom would mostly hinge on how horrible/not horrible the teacher was. Really the problem is mostly predatory social media companies (which gear algorithms for extreme user overconsumption for the obvious profit gains) somehow having their apps end up, even preinstalled in some cases, on youth phones. IMO your town square - which can be considered an analogue to social media when talking about the internet - shouldn't be controlled by for-profit entities or corportations at all. But just my 2 cents.

I get it but I don’t know if I like it. If there’s an emergency (which happens in school)- my kid doesn’t have their phone? I feel like have stronger punishment for being on your phone is better. What are they going to do in college? The work force? Phones are not going anywhere so to try and ban them seems like a band aid approach.

I can see that. I remember school where we took notes. Writing stuff down actually does help you learn it. Recording a lecture on the phone does nowhere near as good and playing with phone during a lecture is less than useless.

i don't know about this. i know the new generation is struggling with focusing in school, but is this the right answer? if violence and school shootings were not so commonplace in America, i might be all for this, but i'm very concerned about the youth. there is danger everywhere, even lurking within staff at some schools, predators. kids need a lifeline! that's what we all said to our parents when we were kids and wanted a phone of course, but it's so very true.

When I was in high school, we had phones but not smartphones. I couldn’t check my email, Facebook, Instagram, KZbin, Twitter, etc until I actually got home. There is an issue of needing to stay connected and updated at all times but I really can’t think of any cases where I got a message I needed to respond to in the middle of the school day. People really don’t need to be connected to the internet at all times and we need to be able to disconnect from it.

I worked at a psychiatric hospital with teenagers for a few years and sometimes we (staff members) would ask the kids out of curiosity whether they missed their phones, since they had no access to their phones while they were admitted. I can't remember a single time when a kid who had been there more than a day said they missed it. Day 1 they absolutely did (partly because it's a new and scary place so naturally they're going to want their usual coping mechanism). But after that, they almost universally said they were actually a bit relieved, like they had less stress and could fully engage with their surroundings. In the last 5 years that's the only place where I've seen teenagers playing cards or board games, going on a walk outside while chatting, dancing to music and laughing together, etc. It was so refreshing which was so odd in that setting. We really need to free kids from their phones, because they want that too. They're just young and need the guidance and rules from adults.

It used to be you just had a few kids that would test the limits but it’d gotten to the point every kid has a phone and they were all sneaking it during classes. It was one thing when a teacher had to deal with 1 kid who wouldn’t put their phone away but it was getting to where the teacher would have 10 to 15 kids sneaking their phones. At that point you’re wasting all your class time policing phones.

NOPE. did the school pay for my child’s phone? then they don’t get to take it! my child would have a written letter from me every morning that stated if any staff confiscate my child’s phone and takes away their emergency tool to contact me, i will be up there and you don’t want me up there. just because your kids are addicted doesn’t mean mine should have no way to reach their parent.
