This was such a strawman argument by Cover 3. That segment was borderline embarrassing to watch. No one (at least anyone with sense) ever said OSU paid $13 million on NIL for the transfer portal. Everything I have read or seen on forums have been discussing OSU spending $13 million on NIL total for this 2024 roster they have built! Built in a number of way, existing players staying, transfer portal, and 5* recruits incoming. Meaning when they field the 22-30 starting players on the field, they will be putting $13 million dollars worth of talent on the field.

@rickygeiger12434 ай бұрын
FWIW I have a few pretty good sources and here's what I know. Downs is basically 1mil a year. JTT is the highest paid player on the roster around 1.5 (he asked for 4 LOL and the collectives basically went to donors trying to raise whatever they could because they wanted to not miss on anyone. They actually raise so much for JTT that they were able to use the excess on downs.) Howard is high 6 figures. Henderson and egbuka are mid 6 figures. I'm not sure on Sayin and Judkins but was told they weren't necessarily looking for NIL. Not that they didn't get anything but they didn't break the bank at all and they both entered the portal, reached out to Ohio State immediately and really didn't consider anyone else. Judkins texted 2 other Ole Miss transfer to OSU last year and immediately said he wants to come. Didn't care about henderson being there or not. He really just wanted to win. Sayin went to Bama the first time. Why? Because he thought it was the best football option for him. The family wants him to be a #1 pick first and foremost. OSU was pushing hard for him in HS and was his second choice if he would've flipped from Bama and now his lead recruiter at Bama is his coach at OSU. JJ Smith got high 6 figures as well. Henderson has good brand deals but he didn't come back for money. Again not that he's not getting paid, but that they weren't like luring him back with a big offer. Just hey if you do want to come back, we'll take care of you. Was also told the roster as a whole is somewhere just north of 10 mil, which generally makes sense. In the portal, if we only count THIS year for Downs, they spent south of 3mil
@rickygeiger12434 ай бұрын
Bit more on Sayin and Judkins. If you followed their Portal entry news, on both of them, the national writers that broke the stories on them entering the portal immediately reported Ohio State, even in their initial reports. If you follow Birm, who is the most tied in OSU recruiting guy with the OSU staff, he was basically immediately dumping cold water on the reports because the coaches were not even sure they wanted to take them, especially sayin. I think the Judkins cold water was the staff thinking they thought initially Judkins saw a wide open room (if OSU lost Trey, they would've had 2 scholarship RBs, a true freshman and a player that redshirt last year) and they knew Trey was coming back and they assumed that'd change the calculus. On Sayin, he reported that within a few hours of Sayin entering the portal, he spoke to someone on the OSU staff that was generally very hesitant to take him. He said that he talked to him a few hours later and his tone had changed a bit. They had a staff meeting 2 days later and decided to take him (birm has been saying for over a year that Sayin was OSU's QB 1 in the class was Sayin and Noland was 2). Was told by someone else that BOB *loves* sayin (I mean day does too) but basically pounded the table like guys wtf are we doing here this is the best qb in the country if we can get him on the roster we should. But again goes back to the idea that neither of those guys were lured to OSU by NIL. When they initially entered the portal, OSU literally didn't think they wanted to even pursue them and they took them because they wanted to come not because they were tampering looking for them (like I believe they did do last year for maye/downs lol)

This pod cast guy keeps referring to Ohio State football in the same context as a professional team in the N.F.L. operates with player compensation. NO, that is not even close to how N.I.L. works. it is still against NCAA rules for a collegiate athletic dept to pay a student athlete. N.I.L. funds come from a non profit collective organization that is not affiliated with any school. The vast majority of funds are donated and the remaining are direct athlete brand endorsements. Without this organization, only the few most marketable athletes would be getting deals. This allows other student athletes to take part. However, no student athlete can just collect a check. Any deal requires approval with a compliance department, which includes declaration of what the student athletes service is for the value of compensation. The Thirteen million statement made by Day was a collective estimate. The actual value is around twenty million. There are other collegiate athletic departments with higher N.I.L. value than Ohio State. I think i saw where Texas is at the top of the list. i also saw Tennessee announced a desired collective of twenty five million. Here is the blurry issue that i don't like, the non profit board does get to assert a market value on players. Which in a way, grants them the combined power of a team general manager and agent to a professional athlete. "The Foundation" is the non profit for Ohio State football and basketball. Everything i stated is the way i understand it. My understanding might not be 100% on everything but im not far off. If anyone has a correction or anything to add, please do.
