@ Nothing was disrespectful. Penn State made a huge offer, and OSU just gave him a legally binding contract that he signed last year. They offered him a 500k raise, which was over a 20% pay increase. It's ok to take another offer, but it was what it was. He chose to go to a rival, so OSU chose to say clean your office out and go. Bye!

The word on the street is this. He chose a job that offered more money. He chose 3.1 million over OSU's offer of 2.7 million, which by the way was a 500k raise while he was already under a contract extension that he signed last year. OSU can't pay everyone what they want when they already have the highest payroll for assistant coaches in the country, it just is how it is. But Knowles chose to go elsewhere, and that is his right to do. So when he informed the AD and Ryan Day he was going to leave anyway, they effective immediately he was no longer employed by Ohio State. That being said, it's like saying clean out your locker and leave by the end of the day. I don't see it as a bad move for Day and the AD to say no, you can't come to the celebration since you obviously don't want to be a part of the team. Case closed.

There are so many conflicting stories out there. Gleitman reported completely differently. Big rift between Knowles and Day following Oregon loss, was never repaired, he was leaving OSU no matter what, PSU offered what he wanted most: full control of the defense. Knowles was the one picking up the phone and asking for job openings starting right after Natty. Also that OSU's offer was the highest money-wise, but without full control.

The true story is that Jim Knowles was unhappy with how Ryan Day treated him compared to other coaches on staff. Ryan Day got on Knowles after the Oregon loss and made him change some stuff. Ryan Day apparently didn't get on the offensive coaches after the michigan loss and Knowles didn't like that. Knowles reportedly reached out to Penn State because he didn't like how Ryan Day was treating him compared to other coaches that are closer to him (chip kelly). This didn't have anything to do with money because Ohio State was ready to match any offer that he wanted. And the report that Ohio States offer was "much lower" is not true. Penn State was offering 3.1 million and OSU was offering 2.75. The reason that they offered 2.75 million is because Jim Knowles JUST signed a 3 year extension a year prior for 2.2 million. Its unconfirmed whether or not ohio state told him not to attend. The only person stating that is Jim Knowles Fiance and sister

They didn’t ask him to not attend. He contacted Penn st first didn’t tell the players he was leaving and no showed the ceremony. Him and Larry Johnson were known for not liking each other and after the Oregon loss there was a lot of tension in that room Knowles couldn’t handle it and he left.

As a Buckeye, we loved Knowles as he took us to the #1 Defense in the country this year. The challenge is he bumped heads with the DL coach after the initial loss to Oregon. By the end of the season, Day jumped in after the Michigan loss & sided w/the DL Coach. I think Knowles was upset after that. It wasn’t personal but it was solely about strategy. Day’s strategy worked in the playoffs so that’s that. THE DL coach was there when we won the 2014 Natl Championship. Knowles is getting older & I think he wanted to be closer to home (Philly, PA) so it works out. There’s no bad blood. I loved him, hate to see him go but we have two coaches from within that will probably get the job.

It's not money, he was already the 3rd highest paid DC and they offered him an amount that would make him the highest. Is possible PSU offered more but not much. If they asked him not to be at the celebration it's because the celebration is full of invited defensive recruits who probably would want to talk to the DC. The big issue they had was control, he was not allowed to run the defense the way he wanted to and clashed with Larry Johnson.

And Knowles definitely didn't see eye to eye with Larry J over defense, which was a lg stdg issue. Although the v best DC, it's best for all that Knowles moves on rt now under his own terms.
