Ohio should’ve contacted Florida. Our state does it correctly. If you have Sunpass or E Pass, the toll gantry will automatically scan your transponder and charge you the reduced rate. If you don’t, they will take a photo of your tag and send you a plate invoice for the toll. This is handy for people who come here from other states maybe they don’t have a Sunpass transponder. They can just get one bill at the end of the month. Of course everyone has the option to purchase a Sunpass and pay the reduced tolls. At one point we did have a similar system to what Ohio seems to have just implemented, but it’s gone bye-bye in recent years. Just about every toll road in the state has converted to these new gantries. Why did Ohio do it this way in 2024?
@socool7753 ай бұрын
I don’t get why this is so hard. Signs are up at the plazas, as you approach the plazas, and well ahead of the plazas, guiding drivers on where they need to go. Illinois had been using this exact same “hybrid” system (tag holders in the “express” lanes, cash/credit users in the right lanes) since the early 2000s (prior to COVID). I have had an active E-ZPass account issued through the Ohio Turnpike since December 2013, and the only time I have ever had an issue with a toll payment was on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in 2021 (this was likely due to a delay in a replenishment payment posting to my account). Every other time my tag had been missed, the toll was paid because I update the license plate and vehicle information in my E-ZPass account. Meaning, if my tag is missed, the system records the license plate, finds a match in E-ZPass, and the toll is charged to my account as if the tag had been properly detected. Not rocket science.

The people that use the road end up paying the majority of the cost of building/maintaining the road. The problem I run into is when people from states that don't have toll roads are not used to this and they don't understand it. A week or two after they get home from a vacation, they get a bill in the mail and it makes them not want to visit Ohio again. I personally love the toll roads. They seem to be maintained better than taxpayer funded roads and you save some time for just a few bucks. I do try to avoid them when possible just because I think the roads should be "free" to travel but, I know everyone pays taxes to cover the cost of "non-toll" roads. It is just the convenience.

I really don’t understand the confusion. If you drive on a toll road, you expect to pay a toll. The signage clearly depicts EZPass and non-EZPass lanes. I don’t know why the Ohio Turnpike Commission did not opt for toll-by-plate technology, but that’s not really relevant to this conversation. If you can read road signs, this is easy to figure out. If you can’t read road signs, you shouldn’t be driving.

OK...first off, I agree with other commenters...READ THE SIGNS. It's that simple. Only a $19 fine? They should be glad it's not more. Pay it and get on with your lives. It's not a scam...it's not a money grab. Anyone complaining wants to be a "victim"...and that is just so sad. Second: GET AN EZ-PASS. It's simple, cheap, and the most convenient thing known to man. There is no excuse...either READ and obey...get an EZ-PASS, or just stay off the turnpike. It's that simple.

cant wait for a big class action against easy pass for these stupid fees on the most minor toll. when the system can easily do toll by mail or web.

Congrats a system that worked and you screwed it up! I love it when you have no plaza workers in person, but they can sit at a desk and watch you on camera. If you have issues good luck. By the way just putting out a press release is NOT letting people know what is going on.

I know in illinois it can be avoided. A little inconvenient but worth it. My friend had an ezpass in his pickup When he registered his vehicle with the TW they didn’t put the notation of “B” which means truck plate For 9 months he took the TW for work 6 days a week through 4 tolls there 3 tolls back. He quit his job, he got a bill in the mail about a month later for $86,000! Took a year to get it figured out. They kept adding interest to the fine. If he didn’t win it would have been over $110,000 😂😂

This guy they're talking to is awful as a spokesperson. Way too many stutters and uhs. He doesn't seem to know exactly what to say, and doesn't seem to really believe in what he is saying.

be cheaper for everyone to not get all fancy and just have toll workers. I live a few miles from turnpike and hate the system of easy pass, refuse to use it for a dozen rides a year. Cash used to be good enough. I fear using it since new way opened. I know retired toll collectors. The system is bad. psa. lol. easy pass needs to be mounted properly? its a radio devise, since when did it become line of sight? my friend had two, personal, and work. A special bag for the work pass, because if it was read for personal trip he would be fired.

if you can read and comprehend english its not confusing. also, relying on a gps to tell you your every move and waiting for it to tell you what to do. the non english speaking cdl drivers need to go back to the sand and mother russia.
