Sawing a black walnut log today. I kept a lot of the footage of moving the slabs for ‪@sawingwithsandy‬ since last week he struggled with a big log too. Enjoy the video.

I didn't know walnut towards the outside of the log is lighter in color than the more mature center when freshly cut. That must smell really good off the mill. Thanks for the video.

Glad you liked it. It's much easier to saw heavy slabs in summer, I don't know why.

Your nephew sure does get a lot of beautiful wood without helping a man out lmao. Be careful out there. These big pieces will take a toll. Beautiful wood and great video as always.

@@mcsawmill Yeah all good here thanks, we've had crazy weather and my excavator needs some work so the engine got pulled out last week, and my chainsaw needs replacing too! Hoping to be back in action in the next week or so.

I hope your nephew appreciates your back breaking work! The bleeping red squirrels chewed thru a plastic deck box to get to the bird seed inside...very destructive and determined tree rats!

Yeah, I saw Sandy's video of sawing a giant Red Oak. There's a new saying - "the struggle is real" that comes to mind when you guys are sawing the big ones on a mill without hydraulics. Good video that shows whatever you get paid for your service, you have earned it. I'm currently turning some big white and post oak into firewood which I would love to have had milled but....... Be careful, don't strain anything.

I know it must be fun, but you have to get paid something unless it's for family. You did mention it was for some family member. But even then, he should be there to help with handling everything. LOL

I enjoyed it. Nice looking. About how long will the boards have to air dry before using?
@mcsawmill
@mcsawmill 6 ай бұрын
about 2 years, but in about 6 months they will be dry enough to put in a kiln and hopefully by then I have my kiln built.

@@joebenjamin9840 I move wood into my garage where I have a heater, in that environment I can air dry twice as fast as if it's outside. So if you are looking to ait dry, do it in an enclosure.

what's "wind shake"?
@mcsawmill
@mcsawmill 6 ай бұрын
Wind shake is when a tree gets a crack between rings. They used to think it was caused by strong winds bending the tree but now they suspect fungus of some sort.

Why do you saw a slab, and leave it on top of your next piece? Just push it off!

The log isn't clamped so weight keeps it from moving.
