What are we sawing?

This is the first of a load of hickory logs Steve and I picked up a few weeks ago. I didn't expect this log to yield much but it turned out to be some incredible wood.
Steve and Bill are woodworker friends, Bills facebook page is "Geauga Woodworx" he sells cutting boards and other wood products.

Looks like some chatoyance on that one, beautiful! If you have someone with a vacuum kiln in the area that may be a good way to go once it's been air dried. Great work gentlemen!

Steve has the mantel, I have a 3" thick slab from that cut. The camera did not do it justice.

That was a beautiful piece of hickory. Your right about it taking a few years to dry unless you put it in a kiln. I mill a lot of mantle’s and sell and I dry them in a solar kiln and it still takes awhile. A little advice on your milling and getting waves, a steady smooth pace on hickory. I seen where Steve was running the mill and the speed was up and down. Speed control is critical on a lot of hardwood. I’m Not an expert just from my experience. Good video

Yea Steve was having some difficulty because my drive rope slips. I would love to see a video about your solar kiln, how much sun it gets, temperatures you reach and how long it takes to dry different woods.

When I bought my mill I thought: "20" cut width ought to be good. How often am I going to cut something larger than 20 inches?" Boy was that a miscalculation.

@@mcsawmill assuming that the blade is running true, when A tooth starts cutting, there should be nothing left for the next bunch to bite into? Everything being planar

@@brucewelty7684 the reason for .020 set is to widen the curf. It really does take 3 teeth to do that on the standard blades.

@@mcsawmill that part, I get. It is the carbide that stumps me.

@@brucewelty7684 carbide blades have no set, every tooth is straight none bent left or right. Instead the carbide is wider than the steel part of the blade and that give you the curf. Looks just like a carbide table saw blade.
