Lets say you only do small stuff. Is there a downside to buying the sds max? Does the bigger drill support smaller bits? Will you be wasting money buying small bits with fat shanks because the sds max only supports the big size in the chuck?

If you primarily work on small projects, buying an SDS Max drill may not be the most practical choice. SDS Max is designed for larger drilling applications and typically accommodates larger drill bits. Smaller drill bits with standard or reduced shanks may not fit properly in an SDS Max chuck. You would most likely need adapters or special accessories to use smaller bits.

Like they said there is adapters like max to plus but with those smaller sizes sometimes a sds plus will actually drill faster then sds max. And it's lighter. And you could destroy or break the smaller bits. Plus has higher speed but not as much power

SDS-Max definitely better option for chipping and demo. These are typically larger hammers with more power, there are more chisel options SDS-Max as well.

I used my hercules hammer drill and a one inch bit to drill thought a brick wall , it did t , but I don't recommend it
