HAMMER DRILL VS. REGULAR DRILL--What's The Difference?!! (Do You NEED a Hammer Drill?!)
Hammer drills and regular cordless drills are NOT interchangeable! They serve very different functions, and operate differently. This short video from The Honest Carpenter will explain the differences between a hammer drill and a regular cordless drill!
Hammer Drill Vs. Regular Cordless Drill:
Regular cordless drills are basically just spinning machines. They have a chuck and jaw that clamps down on a bit. Then, the motor applies torque to turn that bit. Twist drill bits basically just chop or carve their way through wood.
Regular cordless drills are great for drilling wood, plastics, metal, and even cement fiberboard like hardie plank. But, they are terrible at drilling MASONRY!
To drill effectively through masonry, you need a HAMMER DRILL. Most like a Rotary Hammer Drill.
Hammer drills spin--but they also STRIKE. The hammer drill motor carries out a tapping or chipping function while it turns the bit. This causes the bit to pulverize masonry with the tip, the back out the dust and little chunks with the flutes of the bit.
Rotary Hammer drills are larger, more powerful hammer drills that have a stronger striking action, and can bore through thicker, denser masonry more quickly.
Hammer Drill Bits are built with very tough chisel points to better strike material and crush it. Most of the hammer drill bits have a different shank/shaft, called SDS. This slots into bearings in the collet of the hammer drill.
If you only need a hammer drill a few times a year, many companies make standard cordless drills with a hammer setting. If you need to do a lot of masonry work, you're better off getting a Rotary hammer Drill.
My Bosch Bulldog Xtreme has worked great over the years, and has tackled everything I've thrown at it!

You’ve got a unique way of explaining everything with clarity and conciseness! Just like the tools you use, you appreciate them ‘getting to the point’ and doing what you intended them to do without wasting time. No doubt there are young folks (maybe some older ones, too) who are taking your teaching and using it to advance their career by success. Great job,...mentoring, ....not just a show-and-tell for the moment.😀

SDS rotary hammers are definitely the way to go if you’re drilling lots of holes or boring large holes in masonry or concrete. But in my experience standard hammer drill/drivers are fine for smaller jobs like setting tap-cons in masonry. If you’re using them professionally you’ll probably end up needing both tools eventually.

My Dad had an old Hitachi hammer drill which used those SDS bits and chisels. Was an absolute beast that could handle any home project. The chuck mechanism failed though. I now use a smaller Bosch corded drill with a hammer function and while it's not in the same league, it does the job for the small amount of masonry drilling I have to do. I think for the DIY'er the key is corded. A corded drill with hammer action from a good manufacturer is probably all you'll need. Just forget drilling concrete with battery tools!

Years ago, before I knew hammer drills existed, I needed to hang a picture on a solid concrete wall in a new house. It took me about an hour to make a hole with a regular drill. What a pain! I have 2 hammer drills now, but rarely use them. However, when I do use them, I get reminded that getting them was a very good idea.

I love my Bosch Hammerdrill - oddly enough I bought it for 'tunneling' under my house to fix an under slab plumbing issue with the sewer line. The soil was rock and clay imbedded so a shovel was practically useless on it's own and swinging a pick would have been too physically exhausting. There was really no replacement for this tool, any tool that saves physical labor is worth it's weight in gold.

The truth...I bought a local store brand corded hammer drill that came with masonry bits. It struggled to complete the job. If you want to cut through concrete around the home a proper rotary hammer drill that can accommodate sds bits is required to get the job done. Sure you can take a chance with the flimsier models that claim to do the job, but prepare to be disappointment when you have to spend an hour struggling with the cement. I know this from personal experience.

This series of videos finally got my SO off my back - she was always suspicious of my explanations why I have four different power drills (Cordless and corded drill, hammer drill, and spade drill). - Cordless for every day drilling/driving - Corded for extended work (when battery just isn't up to it) and as a motor for things like cleaning the lint from the dryer ducts. - Hammer drill ... well now you know - Spade drill .... ever tried hand mixing a 5 gallon tub of mud? But it doesn't have to cost a fortune for the DIYer. I spend my main money on the corded drill. Everything else is Harbor Freight at about $30-$40 each.

I have a Bosch 1194AVSRK 8 Amp 1/2-Inch Hammer Drill that I purchased in 2009 for my father's small construction company. After one of his workmen somehow managed to break the chuck, it was put back in the case for about 5 years after which I decided to take it over, clean it up and replace the chuck. Since then I have used it to bore holes in a concrete block wall to hang a cast iron garden hose holder, drive sheet screws in a shed roof, bore the holes for the bolts in my Crabwood (a local hardwood) work bench, and drill new holes in concrete walls to replace sun damaged PVC brackets with aluminium ones for holding the down-pipes from the roof of my home. It is truly a versatile piece of equipment that I would not trade for any other type of corded drill.

Your "hammer drill" is NEVER a "hammer drill". Only call it a "rotary hammer". Yes, that matters. 15 years ago I and several of my field techs in multiple states burned up a number of "hammer drills" because our boss in yet another state told us to get "hammer drills". I bought the biggest hammer drill I could find and it still wasn't sufficient for anchoring ATM's in commercial establishments. Hours of drilling and usually only getting two holes completed (always diagonally if that is all you can do) before we had to leave. Finally made my boss give me the name and all of the information on the tag of his "hammer drill" and I went shopping. And figured out what a bonehead my boss was! I called the other techs and gave them new instructions and we were able to successfully catch up and complete the project. Terminology matters. Drill. Hammer drill. Rotary hammer. NOT the same thing. You should relabel this video.

yep but even the 'hammer' drills that your boss told you to buy aren't classed as true hammer drills, they only give out a slight vibration or pulse, that's why they were no good 🙂......sack your boss 🙂

Standard Drill - Fits various bits in adjustable jaws and rotates without impacting Impact Wrench - Rotational impacts but fits square drive (sockets) instead of drill bits Impact Driver - Rotational impacts for driving higher torque but fits bits instead of sockets (typically 1/4” hex) Hammer Drill - Traditional drill except the clutch can vibrate the whole chuck forward and back Rotary Hammer - Hammers only the bit forward with a piston, much like a jackhammer with a rotating tip (bit moves inside chuck) For clarity I have stopped calling a rotary hammer “a hammer drill.” Sure, it has that function too but you can’t turn off the drill on a hammer drill. You can turn it off in many rotary hammers, and the different hammering function is what primarily distinguishes it (can’t use a hammer drill as a jackhammer like you might use a rotary hammer).

I would like to add another difference - whether or not someone like me (female, not young) can even lift the tool. :) I've run out of ideas for getting 3 concrete blocks (originally used to hold clothes poles that are long gone) out of the ground so next I was thinking, "Divide and Conquer" - in other words, break them up. But, what to divide with? Maybe my cordless drill? Doesn't seem strong enough. Hmm, what else is there? That I can actually use without killing myself? I am new to the "KZbin World of Tool Videos"; yours was the first one I've watched about this. I really appreciate your explanation and demonstration of the hammer drill because now I know not to buy one - it just looks too big and heavy for me to use it *safely.* I will keep looking.

There is actually a thing that you missed and that's the cutting edge rake angle. Regular twist drill bits have it positive. Such an angle allows cutting edge to bite deeper into material it cuts. Carbide inserts on masonry drill bits have negative cutting edge rake angle which makes them more resistant but action pushes cutting edge away from material. That's one of the reasons why hammer action is needed. And finally, I did have a negative experience drilling concrete using a good drill but without any hammer action. Doing so is indeed a challenge.

Thanks Quantum! Too true-it’s crazy how much torque there is in anything with roughly a 1/2” chuck. The wrist just isn’t meant to handle that much twist. If the bit catches, or your grip isn’t perfect, you can get you’re hand wrenched in the blink of an eye. Side handles definitely help wrangle a powerful drill, but at some point you have to just back off and find out why you’re binding.

But that is not all. They also released a rotary hammer attachment for their 12V(!) systems... Like you know, these tiny little tools which you use for driving small and medium size fasteners now have an SDS capability. Bosch says it can generate 0.9 Joules of impact energy.

Yeah, it's all good until the drill is screaming its head off......rotary hammer all the way for concrete especially.

Years ago, I was trying to drill a hole for an electrical cable through the 60-year-old top rail of one of my walls and, either because I hit a knot, or just because the wood was old and hard as a rock (I had an electrical contractor complain about that before), it went in about 3/8" and after that, I got nothing but smoke. I tried big bits and small bits, new ones and old ones but I didn't get through that thing until I used a 3" deck screw to cut through the glazed surface and after that, the 5/8" drill started working again. I was lucky I didn't burn the house down. So, I wonder if a hammer drill would have cut through that mess more easily than the simple drill I was using. That may be one more reason to pay the extra $30 for the hammer feature.

Went to Home Depot last week to buy a variable speed drill that could hold a 1/2 inch drill bit. Never heard of a hammer drill before. Apparently the person selling tools at HD never did either. He could not explain to me what a hammer drill was and none of the drills in stock could hold a 1/2 inch drill bit. He kept pointing out drills saying they held 1/2 inch drill bits when they didn't and he didn't know the difference between a hammer drill and a non-hammer drill. I finally had to open up a 1/2 drill package and not one drill in stock could hold it in its chuck. So disappointing. I left without buying any drill. Thank you for this video. I now know why I only buy online.

i recently got my first drill machine one with both modes. I was really confused how to confirm if the hammer function is working, because it didn't look any different when I tried spinning on both modes. finally after watching this video I understand that it's not that apparent. guess I'll have to try drilling holes in my wall!

as a massive, egotistical, stubbourn data administrator with amateur diy experience i have found rotary hammer drills on normal everyday items like plaster walls and wood may be far less practical and handy but very exciting and enjoyable. having an oversized. somewhat outdated term "handheld" rotary hammer drill that i inherited from my grandfather (da old mans amma') their rpm is so fast that you don't have to push hard and the ""tactical foregrip"" minimises the sore right arm syndrome, i have about 3 of these things one beint the grandads and the other being my dads with the third one being mine. theyre very overpowered. the rpm is good because you minimise how long you need to stand there drilling for. theyre a very helpful tool for strange people like myself

Not true, I've drilled into brick, my brick house using regular drill and regular drill bits. Started small then increased the size. Maybe the hammer is recommended more but using a regular drill and bits it is done and very easy, just a little bit of push. My take. thnx though

I use my brushless Milwaukee hammer drill for installing mailboxes into concrete. 1/2 inch size to install anchor bolts at least 4/5 inches deep. I mailboxes at least once a week for work. Use to use an sds but it would require me to move the mailbox but with my hammer drill I have enough clearance so I can drill out while the box sits on its pedestal.

I'm renovating my basement and will be putting up stud walls which I'm supposed to anchor to the cament floor. Should I drill holes into the floor with a hammer drill first before using tapcon screws?

Great explanation. I moved to Germany and I'm sure they sell mostly hammer drills. The walls here are concrete, so you need one just to hang a simple picture.

If you live in a concrete condo - yes, you need a hammer drill. Please buy a hammer drill. Your neighbours will thank you for not needing to listen 100x longer for you to drill one hole.

Hiya, rookie TA here, and I might have missed it in the video but can I use a hammer drill or a rotary hammer for shed building (like metal sheets, girts, purlins, trusses etc.), roofing or even carpentry or is it too rough?

My Bosch normal hammer drill does fine for brick (no damage to the bits or drill and doesn't take long) but it doesn't go near concrete, the bit just spins after about 1/2 an inch and blunts itself smooth.

Thank you I remember the hamer drill almost broke my forearm whe i was drilling on the foundation concrete in the basement, because I lost grip and it spun and smashed my forearm, that hurt and bruiced a lot. You need strong forearms seriously.

One problem with a weaker hammer drill is that it may be totally useless as a hammer drill. With only a few jobs around the home for it, you really want the drill to be able to do it. I don't own one, but I once borrowed a hammer drill, which just chipped the concrete wall cover. I had to rent another one, for a few holes (that's a high price for a few holes, and I still don't own a hammer drill). I'm not getting a hammer drill that won't do the few jobs I have for it.

I’m curious if you can test and comment on using a hammer drill driver as a replacement for an impact driver? It seems like the hammer function of a regular drill driver could stand in for the rotary impact function of an impact driver.
