Hi Joe - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. Some years ago I made hundreds of bags of kindling. To produce a consistent product I weighted each bag before sealing thereby ensuring they all had a uniform weight to provide assurance to retailers and buyers in that regard.

I've got a good idea for a cheap kiln. 35 or 55 gal drum attached to my pig rotisserie. Just fill barrel with chips and rotisserie over a fire for 2 hours. That will kill all bugs and also dry them out. I sell bundles on the side. Between 1000 and 1300 per year all with Super Split.

Cooking wood isn’t firewood. You will figure it out and make lots of money with expansion into cooking wood. When I put $1000 worth of meat in the cooker, the last thing I’m thinking about the cost of the smoke wood. I just want the absolute best stick of wood out of you inventory as it seasons the meat. Hand picked cooking wood is worth 10X +/- more money (in chunk form, not splits or chips) splits are still worth more if they are the right ones that make the best flavor/smoke because hand selected wood makes better flavored finished product. When you know what you are looking for. It’s not too complicated Chips aren’t as important as chunks/splits. I’m happy to answer any questions you might have. I’ve watched every single video you have uploaded. Cook wood division of OWB is a tremendous profit center for you, with little extra effort. The ROI of you extra time and learning a bit will pay off. Because you already have everything you need to be in the cook wood biz(smoking woods) not to be confused with the pizza over guys. You are set there. I was wondering the last couple years when you were going to get into cooking wood. Remember chunk wood is the most profitable. As you said, packaging and @ little knowledge about smoke wood and you are all set. I’ve been self employed my whole life, I’m 56. I get it Joe💪😃 Best of luck in all you do Eric

Now if u can think of a way to make potato chips..... haha great video man, i got a potentially goodish idea for you, whats the maximum length your axis or japa can make/split wood? Cuz u can make em like 24" or 36"long splits, for you chipper, idkman. My gears are rusty too. And gor them hornets, use dawn dishsoap and water spray bottle at night with a flash light. I did the bags like you have about 4 years ago.. what is do is take a stack of the bags, lay em on a cardboard box and get a small metal rod and heat it up with a torch till it glowed than put holes thru the bags. The heat wont make the bags weak so ya can load em up and it has air to breath in too. Other thing we used to do is scale the wood in the bags at get 3lbs a bag of chips. Customers like consistancy in bags of wood chips or chunks for smoking. Make that money!!!

The Titan looks awesome. But with the small sticks it may be that the filling spout is to flat. If you could park on an incline it may be that gravity will help a bit. If you sive the chips, say halve an inch screen. The dust could be sold as smoke chips.

Joe to clean all the small stuff out of your barbecue chips , build a 2x4 frame and cover it with half-inch square hardware cloth , this should shift out all of the fines that you don’t want in the bags of chips … as for punching holes in your plastic bags, you might want to think about gathering a bunch and put Spring clamps at the top and bottom , and then take a leather hole punch and a hammer to punch a bunch of them at same time … just something to think about

If most of your chip sales is just a couple restaurants then why is the cost of labor and retail packaging needed? Why not just sell it to them by the tote full and just swap totes when restocking each place? Just thinking out loud again...sorry for all the racket!
@ohiowoodburner
@ohiowoodburner Жыл бұрын
retail packaging puts me in a position to sell to residential and retail. I avoid bulk as much as I can
@waynetharp
@waynetharp Жыл бұрын
@ohiowoodburner I understand this Joe but you stated 3 restaurants were the bulk of your sales. If 10 bags equals a tote then sale a tote at price of 10 bags. They don't need all the bags and would save you on labor/bags/sticker cost. Slap 1 sticker on the tote. Save the bags for individual sales in retail. Is my question?
@thecurrentmoment
@thecurrentmoment Жыл бұрын
one thing to think about is storage - if a restaurant has limited storage available they might only be able to handle one bag at a time. Otherwise they need a place for a tote, and when the tote is 1/10 full they still have to keep that space available. So it might be more efficient, spacewise, for them to have a smaller volume. Another thing is that usually the smaller the package the higher the margin, so it might be more profitable to do small packages. But it's a good question, especially if you know exactly how and to whom you need to sell

Way to make a new product! It is a hard thing to do in a small business since it is already enough work to keep the operation going, few can do it.

Went to a 4th of July party where they were making pizzas on an Ooni pizza oven. The guy was using pellets on top of the charcoal to generate the flame across the top of the oven. Turned out very well. Chips would work for pizza ovens for sure.
