I've always loved this song since I first heard it; to me "nightswimming" represents the good times of being a teenager and breaking the rules at night and feeling free and happy, the kind of night you will reminisce on forever because it was your perfect night, and it's all topped off by a beatiful piano. It's a bit of a shame you didn't listen to the album version, as it adds a beautiful orchestral string accompaniment after a couple of verses

Time After Time (Annalise) by REM is one of my favorites. I sang Nightswimming & Time After Time when I was approximately 5yrs old with my father.

Nightswimming is one of my favourites. A beautiful and melacholic song. "These things they go away. Replace by everyday..."' 6:01 It is like in the last days of August when it's still warm but you already feel that soon summer is ending. "September is coming soon..." This has a video where young people are swimming in some pool at night. It's perfect for this song. 'E-Bow The Letter' is also same kind of song. It's a meaningful song. You should hear that. :)

This is my favorite R.E.M. song, thanks for reacting to it. 😄 Regarding the "This was before AIDS" thing: Today's younger generations might not get just how much life changed for teenagers when the AIDS epidemic started and casual contact could be deadly. I know you didn't mean anything malicious when you said, "So for him to add THAT line, you guys know what went down!" But he was just saying was that there was a time before AIDS when you could be carefree like that - skinny dipping in a pool at night with a bunch of friends - and not have to worry about dying.

One time I saw them live, the rest of the band took a break and Michael was on stage himself trying to play something on an acoustic guitar. The audience started talking among each other and after a minute Michael says something like, "I'm up here trying to have a moment, and you guys are all out there trying to get laid... and that's what this song is about." The band came out and they started playing Nightswimming.
