My favorite R.E.M. song. Thank you so much for reacting to it. FYI the album version also has a beautiful oboe in it, which brings the song to a higher plain of greatness. Give it a listen.

You can kinda hear the oboe in there, and some of the strings. Might have been parts of the actual album track was added in low in the background.

Michael Stipe (the lead singer and principal lyricist) has really always been a poet who happens to front a rock band. It's hard to explain how much these guys were at the forefront of "college rock" in the 80s. Hit some stuff from their early albums ASAP. You won't regret it.

Fun fact: John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin arranged the strings on this album. Also, not all their songs are as morose as Everybody Hurts and this one. They’ve got fun, peppy songs, introspective rockers etc

Every time I hear this song I'm transported back to the group of teens I grew up with down to the lake at night for the first time skinny-dipping.🎸🎶

My favourite of theirs. They’ve done so many wonderful songs. Lots of more uptempo and rocky numbers but this is just beautiful. Lovely to see it hit you the same way

We talk about classic rock and essential bands. The 80s had their essentials too: Talking Heads, U2, Depeche Mode, The Cure, and, of course, REM, among others.

I remember seeing this on cable over 10 years ago.. this is from the Late Night with Jools Holland show, and Jools did a short interview with them before the song.. There is plenty of great REM songs to react to.. try some up tempo tunes like "Driver 8", "South Central Rain", "Pretty Persuasion", "Radio Free Europe", "Can't Get There From Here", or "Orange Crush" for starters.. some of their best songs.

Thank you for reacting to this song. It’s one of my favorite REM songs.I have always found it very soothing and back when I was in school decades ago, I would play it on repeat on nights I was struggling to fall asleep because my mind was racing. Kinda of like a mantra, it would help me reset my mind.

Hi! Glad to run across your channel, I think earlier R.E.M. deserves more recognission. I think a good place to start is Oddfellows Local 151. I will be tuning in regardless. Good vibes here. thx

There's so much more good R.E.M. If you haven't already heard "Losing My Religion", you should hear that, but if you watch the video, focus on the song rather than the video, which I think conveys a different message from what the song intends. Then check out some '80s R.E.M.: "Radio Free Europe", "Fall on Me", "It's the End of the World as We Know It", and "Orange Crush".

A coupled of bands I'm reminded of when I listen to are 10,000 Maniacs and there are some videos with Michael Stipe and Natalie Merchant singing together. I believe they use to date. Natalie Merchant (10,0000 Maniacs). Big Star a 70's band was one of the bands that influenced REM. "Thirteen" "September Gurls", "O My Soul" "In the Street", ect

This is a good song, but they actually do have more upbeat and faster songs as well. "Pop Song 89", "Stand", "Shiny Happy People", "Don't Go Back To Rockville", "Driver 8", "It's The End of the World As We Know It".
