I realized that even though I do not repeat the exact same subject more than once, I do tend to paint similar subjects - and this is how I learn. As a beginner sketcher I quickly got into the habit of sketching every day with your January Patreon challenge. As we only have a few days left, I am already looking around to see what I can sketch once I run out of your prompts.

Repetition helps me very much, but my impatience often stops me and then, as you say, I'm stuck. At the moment, I'm stuck, so I will take your advice and spend more time repeating and experimenting. Another thing that I appreciate about this exercise is that you drew the subject with your brush. I wish to practice that too. Thank you so very much for your help and sharing your experience with us.

Hi Jody - Thank you for sharing! It’s great that you’re recognising how repetition can help during the 'stuck' phase. And it really does work wonders with patience. Drawing directly with a brush is such a fun practice although it might feel tricky at first, but it’s so freeing. What subject are you thinking of experimenting with next?

Such a powerful message. I'm also a novelist, and I cannot image letting the world see my 'first draft.' Thank you for the lovely reminder to paint, and paint again, and paint again.

Thank you so much! It’s amazing how similar the creative process is across different arts. Thats the word I was looking for 'draft' ...each draft whether in writing or painting gets us closer to something a bit more meaningful. What’s been your favourite part of revisiting and refining your work

Wonderful! I painted the same winter landscape over seven or eight times and experienced some of what you mention here. I changed colors. I painted on sparkly paper. I used gold paint for the tinsel on a tree, etc. Confidence, playfulness, discovery all happened and I noted the benefit of doing something over and over. Thank you.

Since I restarted my art journey, about 7 years ago ( after a 20 year hiatus), I've started a daily sketchbook habit, and also have been sketching and painting my morning coffee cups or coffee filter hundreds of times.. It has probably been the best , and most beneficial of all my art practices !! I have tried sooo many techniques, mediums, color palettes, brushes etc., as I sketch each day . That practice and habit has freed me up sooo much, as I don't care about the outcome as much as I used to.. That made me braver , and also I let go of that " preciousness " factor , and just go into each days little piece with a " what if i try this?" approach.. My brushstrokes have loosened up, my color palettes have evolved , I've discovered new color combinations and much ,much more .. Thanks for this video , Ohn Mar !! I'm glad you're sharing this with everyone.. Norakag , here👍👍

I’ve never repeated a subject. For fear of being bored. But your lesson has shown me how important repetition is!! Love all of your sketches. I can see how lovely your final ones are tho!

I’m glad the lesson gave you a new perspective on repeating a certain subject. And in some ways it can actually make the process more exciting and really interesting as you discover new things each time. Is there a subject you’d like to try repeating ?

I am so inspired by you! I am retired and just started painting this summer. I had bought your book “Go With the Flow Painting” even before I knew you had a channel and am making my way through it. Also, as I am discovering my artsy self, I have been instinctively doing repetitions of pieces I like but are just not right and I learn something new every time. Thank you for posting this!

Thank you so much for your kind words! I’m thrilled to hear you’re enjoying the book and exploring painting-it’s such a wonderful way to spend time. Repetition is such a powerful way to learn, and it sounds like you’re really embracing the process. What’s been your favourite discovery so far on your artistic journey?

@@OhnMarWinArt my biggest discovery is definitely how much practice can improve my work. Having spent my career as an editor and writer (copywriter) I never learned that. Somehow, visual art is teaching me that. Or maybe I’m just ready to learn! Thank you for asking. I look forward to watching more of your videos and, of course, working in your book.

Great video! I’ve been on a repetition kick and this video was lovely validation. I’d been beating myself up for endlessly painting apples, pears, over and over and that I should attempt other subjects. And now o can relax into the wisdom of what my gut was telling me about painting those subjects repeatedly as a way to grow.

I'm baaaaad at repetition 😅 I find it SO hard. I feel like if I've done it once and it's fine, the dopamine is released and the idea of going back immediately meets so much internal resistance. The last two years I've been going to life drawing and that has helped a lot with this because I'm committed to improving my figures. I often see the same model and similar poses but I'm not choosing it, the model is and so I can just be, I also bought a couple of life drawing reference packs on proko and because you can set a timer and it randomly selects images, I also don't get a choice if there's the same image I've drawn before so that also forces me into repetition. At the moment the other thing I'm doing to help me with this struggle, is learning traditional tattoo flash artwork. I don't necessarily want to be a tattoo artist, but the requirement of this style is to simplify and repeat. The same subject matter is repeated over and over again and you must draw it simply and in the most readable way you can. Hope that gives some ideas to anyone struggling with repetition resistance like me!!

I love this and did this with a portrait last year, drawing it on the same page. And I also have a portrait that I draw once a year to see how I’ve improved.
