Patlabor's strongest point for me is its realism. Not just from the point of mecha, but also in all other topics. From personalities of the characters to bureaucracy in police and politics. Corrupt figures, greedy corporations.

The realism of the show was what drew me to Patlabor as I did not like mecha shows in general. The social, political and environmental context is all very relevant today, and the characters were so well written that I was drawn into the world completely. Great show that's still missed.

To be honest, that is probably more the Movie 2 and 3 which are perfect in everyway and the best of the Patlabor universe even if Patlabor 3 kinda feels... Off? Change my mind. The rest feels a bit more cartoony but still amazing as they make something that should be boring, fun to watch.

"battling giant monsters, looking for lost cats, parodying other genres of science fiction, and other slapstick comedy scenarios" you say this as a reason the tv series is inferior but this is exactly what makes it so special and is an important, fundamental part of what patlabor is. you say it like those parts of the tv series are just some meaningless side content but it's a vast majority of the animated content in the franchise, and from what i've seen of it, the manga tends to be the same. i can absolutely understand preferring the movies, the first two are incredible, but they don't define the series as a whole. especially not the second one, as good as it may be. either way, it's good to see patlabor getting some recognition. makes me glad to know nearly 60,000 people have at least heard its name thanks to this video. good job

Preferring the excellent but tonally different movies (the first 2 anyway) over the TV series is understandable; but I think you did the TV series a MAJOR disservice. Excellent video in any event.

8:13 I am surprised that Patlabor 2 was made in 1993, it looks like it was made around 1996 to 1999 because of the high quality animation and its fluidity. Sometimes it can be mistaken for CGI in some scenes.

I honestly found the TV series more compelling than the complicated mess that is the OVA and movie continuity. I for the life of me could not understand where I was suppose to start with the "movie universe" and how it retcons a lot of the TV series. I generally found the TV series more iconic tbh due to its unique take to the mecha genre of being a slice of life, comedy, and drama.

I also believe the TV Series and New OVA universe is the best. It's because of the character development and world-building, which made canon everything we see in Patabor 2 and 3. It's also a more enjoyable experience as the movies and original OVA tended towards political themes and military coups, which wasn't actually what got me into the show in the first place. For me, Patlabor is one of the best shows -not just animated - of all time, and that's because of the characters and the fully realized world they inhabited. Now only if the Patlabor EZY series will ever be green-lit by the powers that be, we can have more of that cohesive and realistic world again!

Oshii was one of the best anime directors of his time, truly a shame that he is wasting his talent at something he is not even good at.

The pure depth of the story and the animation,... It made me recognize that Japanese animation could rival and best Hollywood in a feature film.

Sorry “Robotech” is not exactly anime! Don’t get me wrong, I love the series but it is a Americanised cartoon series. It hasn't been forgotten, it's just bidding its time. The TV series is fun and quirky, it's a giant mix of different genres, it can get serious or light hearted when appropriate, it has probably the best character development out of all the medias because of the long running format (the manga too). I don't think it's inferior to the movies, in fact i think it's an excellent entry to the franchise, the movies are masterpieces but it's not friendly to viewers that aren't familiar with the universe or characters. And lets not forget its roots in the original OVA, which is pretty much like a condensed version of the TV series with its quirky episodes. Sidenote, WXIII is based on one of the story arcs in the manga but altered to focus on the detectives than SV2.

The movies in the early 90's is what got me hard into patlabor. I remember looking up headgear work after but now I know they never made anything else. The labor designs, the open badass shots, the dialogue. It drew me in hard af. I still watch the movies to this day. If guillermo were to have revived a franchise. I would totally have picked this over battle angel. He made pacific rim. If mamoru decided to team up with the other writers and Guillermo. I think they'd have a his live action adaptation

This video takes too much from personal opinion and not from hard fact, what a video showcasing a franchise should be. Calling the SOL and slapstick episodes of the TV series inferior is entirely your opinion, and in fact I feel like much of the Patlabor fanbase actually LOVES these episodes, and BTW Oshii himself wrote many of the funniest episodes of the TV series canon. What makes Patlabor great are these kinda stuff too. Comedic/SOL Patlabor and serious Patlabor are both sides of the same coin that work together to strengthen each other. I mean, 1st movie has many comedic parts and awesome srsbsns scenes and it all is an epic.

Truly an underappreciated gem! I stumbled onto this show in ...1993? It was at a small general Sci-Fi/Fantasy convention somewhere in Dallas. They had one crowded room running anime, which I had recently re-discovered. (Starblazers and Robotech were obsessions of my childhood and adolescence.) By chance, I happened to catch an episode of the Patlabor TV series. It was a fan-subbed bootleg, as in those days, very little anime could be found in the US market. Anyway, now it's all available on Blu-Ray, so I'll be revisiting this great series, perhaps in the order you recommend. And now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to dust off my old Patlabor soundtrack CD!

I'm going to have to strongly disagree with you about the TV universe paling in comparison to the movie universe because it wasted so much time with comedy. I had watched the movies years before I ever got to see the TV series, and honestly, the TV series made me fall in love with the franchise all over again because it was such a funny combination and it worked. To this day, when I have to explain to people what exactly Patlabor is, I just tell them, "imagine Gundam and Police Academy had a love child".

I love the fact that Patlabor, is sci-fi, but modern, and for most part grounded in realism. Usually the mechanics move slower, aren't some kind of "savior" group of robots... it's just equipment/tools for the job. I also liked the fact that, some things are scaled up, to fit the mechs. Like the body armor. Visually, the movies are stunning, with everything usually having "weight" to the actions. Special place in my heart for Patlabor. :)

What always struck me was the mechanical love they had with these designs, I'm a big fan of mecha but you just don't get the internals like GiTS and patlabour But the most remarkable thing is that they had to do it by stencil and hand rather than digitally and cgi like now. Kinda late on this, but Patlabor was used in Kyoei Toshi game for PS4 in 2017. It's a title done in the same vein as the Disaster Report/Zettai Zetsumei Toshi series (being a civilian trying to escape a city that's being destroyed due to a disaster) but with a twist being that it's in the kaiju tokusatsu genre. Patlabor is just one of the franchises to take part and they are featured as the metro police aiding the evacuation, saving peoples lives and fighting other kaiju until bigger help arrives, in the form of Ultramen, Evangelions and even Godzilla himself.

Originally I suppose, but the series had enough flexibility and creativity to branch itself into other types of narratives as well. Confining a series of any kind to only one type of story eventually causes it to stagnate, so I'm very glad that they decided to change it up for the movies; I and many others absolutely loved the serious, political thriller aspect of Patlabor 2.

I'm so happy that more more anime fans will discover this anime. I never knew about the history of it until now and I believe I only watched one single film (I vaguely remember that there was a scene where a Labor fought another Labor on top of this tower/oil platform thing and another scene with a kettle overheating or something). I watched this when I was 5 or 8 I believe (At that point, I was in the dying age of VHS tape and players), when I was at my Grandparents' place. I didn't understand it but I know I absolutely loved the hell out of it and watched it so much I couldn't even keep count. This video made my day. Thank you for making it. Edit: I think it may be the second film since I recognize the opening scene from the second film. Edit 2: Okay no wait it is mostly likely (definetely) the first film. PATLABOR is awesome. I watched the OVA on Hulu and bought the DVDs of the movies a few years ago. I wish they'd make blu-ray releases of all the great 80s and early 90s anime. I like some of the new digitally colored series, but there's nothing like the old-fashioned ink and paint to push all my nostalgia buttons.

This series is far more than an anime production. It reflects how Japanese of the era had their vision for the future and what were they felt and worried for their society. Well, the reality is a collapsed bubble economy brought decline rather than struggling yet advancing development. I got complicate feelings when I watch it again now! Our actual world is going to be like or much similar to Ghost in the Shell that China is to be the next Super Power! Due to her status and only if her status that make Japanese make such fine works. The U.S., China and the rest of the world cannot because they are "normal" states, which lacks sensitive awareness to details.

I love Patlabor and I try to get as many people to watch it as I can, usually settling for the OVA and/or the movies since I understand knowing where to start can seem daunting to first timers. Unfortunately I'm a well known mecha-fanatic in my circles and I get the impression some don't believe me when I say you don't have to be one to enjoy this series. lol I watched the first and second Patlabor movies a few years ago and I was just blown away at how deeply relevant and complex a movie it and its themes are, even compared to other Japanese animated films. The mecha is amazing but it truly is just a set piece to the larger themes of this thing. It really is one of the best the mecha subgenre's produced, as well as the most sensible and relevant. And for the record btw, I do agree with a lot of comments here that the treatment the TV series gets here isn't completely fair. I know that I said the serious, political and socio-economic themes of the movies are incredibly done...but I think the lighter slice of life tone of the TV series has its place too, because it doesn't completely shy away from aforementioned darker themes, but the more lighthearted tone better rounds the overall cast when taken in context to the more serious installments of the overall franchise. The TV series imo still maintained what I've always thought was Patlabor's greatest strength, that being that its a show more about the overall ensemble cast of Section 2, rather than just focus on one main character, but the at times humoristic day to day plots allowed the goofy aspects of their lives just make them more human to me. For me at least, it made it so when you watch the movies (even though I know they're technically in another continuity yada yada.), the stark contrast in tone that these same characters are put through makes things feel heavier. Like, these guys' lives have good times, funny times, and then really serious or even down times and it all feels legit. Especially in the second movie, when seeing how Noa's slowly changed as a person as the cast prepares to move on with their lives after Section 2. All and all I can see why the TV series might be divisive for some, but I've always found it to be a welcome part of the overall meta-setting of Patlabor.

KZbin recommended me some patlabor 2 scenes and i liked those, reminded me of ghost in the shell so i became intrigued. Then youtube recommends me your video detailing the patlabor franchise. I'm a bit terrified by the good algorythm but i found some good movies and a good channel so its alright

Dude Both the TV and Movie are both great in their own right. In fact when Patlabor was created, it was meant to be a super serious as the films made it be. Your really undervaluing the Television anime....

Strange in what ways this video has aged. I agree with every opinion, and am thankful I discovered Patlabor today compared to a few years ago. Hidive has the entire anime, except for New Files, up for streaming. And New Files is still in the bluray set, so it's easy to get despite the weird gateway to consume it. I would say the live action is still the hardest to track down. There are no fan translations, but I easily found the Chinese blurays of the live action series with English subtitles... kind of. China sold the series in two halves, and I managed to purchase the first set and film with no challenge, but can't find the second set (episodes 7-12) absolutely anywhere. The live action is still being shipped to me as I write this, so I can't speak for its quality; but I just wanted to touch on the differences between 2017 and 2021. I'm certainly glad the franchise is progressively becoming easier to consume. Lastly though, it's been almost 4 years since the EZY announcement and we have nothing to go off of. I don't even know if the project is still happening, and I consider that tragic. I really want it to come true and for Patlabor to see a revival. It's not just hard science fiction, but it's uniquely its own thing. Whether it was made in the 80s or 90s, it did its best to both parody and commentate on heavy political ideas before the change of the century. Be it funny or serious, I want that prophetic commentary to return in an era that desperately needs it.

Patlabor 2 is literally mamoru oshii's best film. It's a crime that it's so underrated. Don't get me wrong, ghost in the shell is God tier, but patlabor 2 might just be a little bit better.

It's one of my favorite franchises. Goto is one of my favorite anime characters of all time, maybe one of my favorite fictional characters period. I feel like you sort of missed the point of the TV series. It's a slice of life about the day to day existence of SV2. It's more lighthearted but it's got superior character development because that's what it's about, the characters. If you want Ohshii's philosophical rambling then sure, you'll probably prefer the movies, but it's a very unique series that I think you were a little hard on. I love the movies but I find they can be a little long-winded all over the place. They're not as much about the SV2 cast and the second film in particular borrows heavily from the plot of the final few episodes of the original OVA. The animation, especially in the second film, is amazing of course. There's also two dubs of the movies, the Manga dub and the Bandai Visual dub which is more accurate.
