To download an mp3 file of the accompaniment, go to www.steveparkhornmusic.net. The first two movements of the piece (this video) are playable by a good high school horn Player. The last movement (part 2) is much more difficult!!! Subscribe! I will be adding more solos on a regular basis. I teach horn at a University and my goal is to create a video library of some of the best horn solos for my students and others. Also let me know if there is something you would like me to record. If you would like an mp3 file of the accompaniment, send me your email address and I will send you the file.

I'm gooing to audition for college on this piece; my private lessons teacher believes that I am very capable of playing the entire thing. I've got the first two parts down, but the last section is insane.I can play all but those darn C's... at elast I can't hit them consistently, but I am very determined to play this piece. Thanks for posting this, I needed to hear it to get an idea of what I am lacking in. Now, I know, for one, I'm playing it too fast.

This is a fact, I played trumpet very poorly until my senior year of high school. I wanted to go to school for music but I wouldn't have made it on trumpet, so I tried horn out and the difference was incredible! I picked it up really quickly, I've been happily playing horn for about 3 years now in university.

Horn is harder to play than trumpet, especially at first because the notes are so close together. Braces also make it harder, but lots of students do it and are successful. I start most of my students on trumpet and then switch them to horn after they have learned to control their embouchure (about 2 months).

Your first movement....the articulation and spacing is so perfect and so clean in the main melody!!! And how do you get the "slippery" section of the triplet section so clean and even? I can't seem to get it and when I do hit the notes, it seems so accented and so clearly in threes that it sounds horrible!!

You must have an arrangement. Either that or you are thinking about the end of the last movement, which does end on a high C. I have seen a couple of different editions and the 2nd movement ends the way I did it on this recording.

Would there be much of a difference in playing ability if one were to start on french horn? I wasn't started on a trumpet, instead I played a french horn from the beginning. A thing that peeved me, was that a trumpet player borrowed a horn and was told the fingerings of a high Ab. After 2 tries he reached it when I had been trying for much longer. After 4 years on the horn my range has increased but I don't forget that. My teachers don't want me to learn trumpet either.

How do you know when to use and not use the trigger? Like for what notes should it be used for or is it solely based on the player and what notes they have trouble with?
@jasminek.16
@jasminek.16 4 жыл бұрын
D M R The trigger switches to the Bb horn, which has a better upper range, so people often press the trigger to play higher notes (above the b). The trigger is also pretty useful to do rips and it helps with awkward fingering.

@tibelditab I am not him, and I am only in high school, but, myself, I use just single tonguing. It's very difficult for me to make it clean but it is not so fast that you should use double-tongue in my opinion. The tempo my teacher has me play it is quarter note = 92 bpm so it's not too bad. To practice tonguing, I put the metronome at 60 and play quarters, then eighths, then triplets, then sixteenths, and then raise the tempo from there to get faster and faster.

Rocky LaRouge I used to be the exact same. I find that some notes are very out of tune of played with the trigger if they normally aren't. My prof is a Juilliard graduate and just about killed me the first time she saw me use all trigger lol. And also...remember that using only trigger means that you are using only the Bb side of the horn. Which defeats the purpose of the double. F horn sounds best when playing a lower register. Get with a horn professor!

Not really, the real sound of the horn is the F horn though, not so much b flat. The lower range is better played on the F horn except for the extremes. Some pro's use a combination of two.
