The watercolour markers are dual tipped, with a fineliner on the other end. Just didn't hear you mention it, so I thought I would :)

I find that bamboo paper (I use Clairefontaine, which has a smooth grain) works best for my watersoluble markers and pencils. No lines at all and the paper doesn’t pill even with the Ecoline markers. It works like the HP cellulose paper you used but is almost indestructible.

I believe the technical reason it truly soaks into cotton paper is that the ink in the markers is dye based. Dye soaks in where pigment flows on top of those same paper. Still fun markers and well done review. Thank you.
